Fun thread on Reddit about what Chris Rock's first joke is going to be at his show tomorrow:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/ts82um/chris_rock_is_performing_a_standup_gig_tonight_in/

Some good ones:
Quote:

"So. I guess you've all heard that GI Jane 2 probably isn't happening."
Quote:

"Well after my busy schedule of producing Will's biggest hit in years, I was able to make it here tonight."
Quote:

"Now before we start, does anyone here have a wife with a medical condition that I need to be aware of"

So good.

I had no idea his first show was tomorrow, though. I just assumed it was weeks from now for whatever reason. No wonder he's been silent, he's saving it all for the show.

Yeah, I mentioned the Smith/Robbie thing in the other thread. There was a TON of smoke there, credible rumors, and some pretty convincing paparazzi/set pics, if I remember correctly.

My brother is on the bandwagon thinking he's gay (and that she's his beard). His perspective is that he won't come out because of his rap back ground and despite the cultural change around the perception, that part combined with his persona would be a really weird platform. He thinks the punch on Sunday was Will's frustration about being constantly made fun of over the last few years and not being able to "be himself".

There's lots of holes in his theory but it's funny for me to see others commenting on the same assumptions.

If it was some random off the street that had walked on stage and assaulted someone - arrested, still sitting in jail today
If it had been someone that was allowed to be there - seat filler, production assistant, b-movie actor - arrested, in jail
If it had been Kanye, or Mel Gibson or another self important celebrity, they would've at least been escorted out.
WS was allowed to return to his seat, accept an award and be toast of the party.
And he did strike him, not a slap. That was a full extended punch that was followed thru on - palm out first - the way they teach in self defense classes (or on movie sets) and can be more effective than a clinched fist punch.
And go back to the video - CR says "I could.." (say something that would really embarrass you right now and take you down) but he stopped himself and took the high road.
WS should be persona non grata in Hollywood but I'm sure unfortunately he'll be allowed to have his redemption tour.

ABC News reporting that the Academy asked him to leave after the slap and he refused.

Normally being asked to leave isn't actually a question. That's crazy that he was allowed to stay.

that's why you don't "ask" someone to leave your party

I think the wording is very specific for a reason. Notice the Academy doesn't say "we" asked him to leave. Smith's publicists could have very well asked him, "Do you want to leave?" he said no, the Academy had knowledge of this, and could now be running with it as a way to try and save face. Who knows?

I'm not excusing Smith at all - the guy totally should have been booted from the theater - but I remember when he was nominated in 2002 for Ali, he had to leave mid-ceremony because one of his kids got super sick or had an accident or something. Granted, he didn't end up winning, but I guarantee you that was going through his mind this go-around, making sure he wasn't going to miss the announcement a second time.

And for all the people there that claim they stand up for the little guy, the marginalized and the weaker less powerful and want to empower people, they just stood idly by while one of the most powerful men in the theater in that moment assaulted someone who most probably perceive as less powerful, in that moment. They then gave him a standing ovation. So sickening. These people need to do some soul searching before they go in to preach at the rest of the world like they are wont to do.

I understand not reacting in that moment. It's that standing ovation that is troubling. They've all had time now to think about it and chose their action.

Would like to see a picture of the audience to see if there are any actors that stayed seated and withheld applause (excluding those who lost to him who have to act like they are happy for him)

The Academy leadership, the telecast producers, the ceremony itself... it all just needs a complete reboot. Get rid of these people and bring in leaders/producers with actual spines, who truly give a sh*t about celebrating movies. The entire night was an abomination.

On the one hand, it's great news because now Will Smith looks even worse than he already did.

On the other hand, it's just cementing proof that every person there looked around and thought "If I make a fuss, I might get cancelled too, so I'll just be a sheep and see what happens."

My very first task on my very first day in this industry, as an intern in 2003, was to microwave a bowl of oatmeal for then-Academy President, Sid Ganis. He was such a class act, oversaw some of the best Oscars ever, and just an all-around great guy. One of the best bosses I've ever had. These clowns and the show today are such a sad, pale comparison to him/the ceremonies back then.

Bare minimum, Smith should be kicked out of the Academy and banned for life, while Rubin and Hudson should be fired immediately. One of them I think is actually about to retire, but still. Burn it all down.

I'd be tempted to skip the best actor category once he refused to leave, but I assume even those academy big shots didn't know who the winner was until the envelope was opened. Either that or get security to walk him out. But again, easy to make those calls days later.
TCTTS

You don't "ask" Smith to leave, then do nothing when he refuses. You tell him he's leaving, and then you remove him. You also don't wait 48 hours to reveal this info, either. They're getting raked over the coals right now, and deservedly so.

Not to mention, the Academy has been a mess under their guidance for years now, as has been the show itself. They're just not very good at what they do, and this was basically the last straw.

Not on Ernst & Young's watch, they wouldn't.

A belligerent mentally unstable Will Smith would have caused a much worse scene had he been removed by force. I cannot imagine anyone in Hollywood willing to withstand those "optics".

TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Maybe so. But the far more damaging optics are what ultimately transpired... hundreds of Academy members and Hollywood peeps standing and applauding Smith after he assaulted a guy on stage, to whom he arrogantly didn't apologize to during his acceptance speech, for the award he received less than an hour after the incident. All on national TV, in front of 15 million horrified fans, who now think less of the Academy/Hollywood than many of them already did.
