Celebs do this all the time. They know that at any given moment, there's a good chance the cameras are on them, so they laugh at jokes before getting a chance to process them. You even see some celebs laughing at jokes clowning them specifically, then after a few seconds, sometimes they get a bitter taste in their mouths. You have to remember how fake and sociopathic these people are.

Amateurs compared to politicians, however.

Man... everyday I think the internet is the worst thing in the world... and then something like that is pulled up, and I'm reminded of how awesome it can be.

Smith successfully protected his family by having the entire world talk about them.

Will Smith's reputation will forever be tarnished. And he is worth like $350MM per the webz. I am not sure you could pay him enough to go along with such a plan, but who knows.

Also, weird that they would wait until the latter part of the show to try to drum up ratings. I just don't think the conspiracy angle is very realistic at all. And I don't think they are THAT good of actors.

There was a Trump/Cruz comparison a couple of pages back. This is the simple difference:

It is wildly inappropriate and unprecedented for a politician to insult the appearance of a competitor's non-politician wife.

It is very common for a comedian at the Oscars to make an inappropriate joke about another celebrity in the audience.

In either situation, going up and hitting the person is completely insane.

The idea that Smith would agree to ruin what should be the pinnacle of his career just to try and help boost TV ratings seems laughable to me.

It's been less than 24 hours and I think I've already surpassed my meme quota from this event. Every internet outlet has one.

Wouldn't put it past them but if that's the case then Chris Rock deserves every Oscar next year.

Don't really see anything "Ghetto trash" about the slap or Smith's public and private lives (what we know of them). Was the slap contrived? Sure. Narcissistic and unaware? Sure. Uncalled for? Yep.

As to Smith himself, he apparently adheres to a religion invented by a B-rate Sci-fi writer, his wife has emasculated him publicly and they have a broken marriage he's trying to prop up with unconvincing explanations, and his kids (at least the two I know about) are a train wreck of post-modern confusion, unhappiness and self-importance. His family seems like the epitome of "coastal elite" disfunction much more than anything ghetto. It's pretty sad, tbh.

I predict Jada is nominated next year for some bit role, and all the media will talk about how she has struggled through this past year and the strength she has shown the world dealing with her condition.

Will has to give Chris the Oscar and then has to play Marty the Zebra's idiot cousin in Madagascar 4 and Chris gets to write all of his dialogue.
