So you're discounting they heydey of Bill Hader, Jason Sudekis, Kristin Wig, Amy Poehler, The Lonely Island, etc?

Okay.

Cmon man, you know that SNL was funniest when each of us was in highschool/college and has gotten less funny since.

It always makes me laugh when people go out of their way to trash SNL and Pat themselves on the back. As if that sentiment is new and unique to them

On SNL, I tend to agree that people think SNL was best when they were watching it in their own youth/prime. So there is bias there.

However, I think directionally speaking it is trending generally worse with exceptions and outliers here and there. And i think that is due to a variety of reasons:
  • talent they haven't hit on
  • writers aren't as good
  • the show became a little too vindictive and one-sided with their political skits
  • comedy in general has become more constrained due to absurd political correctness and fear of pissing certain people off

I've been watching SNL since around 1987. It always make me laugh someway, somehow because I like sketch comedy, weird bits, and people taking the risk to be on live TV. There have been shining stars throughout the years and people that I don't think are that funny, but I love that the show has endured and continues to be reverential of itself and a huge parody of itself. 50th anniversary is in 2024, I hope they do something huge like they did in 2014.

Seriously, if you think it's stupid, why in the world would you watch even a single second of it?

I think this season has some of the best skits I've seen in years and some of the worst skits I've seen in years. Last night was a lot of duds imo. I like the cast on everything they do besides their political stuff.* I'm admittedly biased towards the right, but the humor seems mean, not fun. But that's politics in general right now.

This sketch a few weeks ago is a perfect example of taking a social issue, and playing with it in a smart way that everyone can laugh at it. More stuff along these lines and less skits making fun of what Fox News said last week would have a lot more people tuning in.

*James Austin Johnson's trump is light years funnier than anyone playing him previously.

My standard line in all threads that turn into a SNL thread:

SNL was funniest when I was a teen, and I rarely watch it anymore because it isn't funny. Also, SNL before I watched is overrated.

Reminds me of T'challa and Tom Hanks on Black Jeopardy.

Good natured but still something that everybody can laugh at.

Wow. She f/cking sucks.

Everything about his tone and body language in that clip points to someone who is 100% still not cool with whatever the hell she did to him, made worse by her trying to say it's "fixed" now, when it's clearly not. And yeah, he likely screwed around too, though I'd be willing to bet just about anything she made the first move/was the first to push for an open relationship, and he then reluctantly reacted in kind.

Just divorce her already. It's only a matter of time, as there's no way that marriage lasts at this point.

I just read maybe the top 30 or so and actually agree with nearly every one. Will obviously shouldn't have done what he did - I'm not discounting that at all, and he should face the consequences - but I think it was 100% the result of the ticking time bomb that is life with that psycho, who also happens to be the mother of his children, and he finally just went boom.

Stress REVEALS your character. Will just demonstrated who he is. He doesn't need to lose all his wealth or spend the rest of his life in prison or anything like that. However, he should have the decency to stop trying to be a public figure and never be a spokesperson again and just live his blessed life and stay out of ours.

Isn't it YOUR choice whether or not he's in your life or not? Seems like he can go do his thing and you've got the option to watch him, read about him, show interest in him….or not.

Lol, I had the same reaction. How the hell is Will Smith forcing his way into my life? Other than seeing the news about the Oscars slap I hadn't heard hide nor hair about him in years.

Fair. You're right. That's an overstatement by me.

More of a frustration in general with celebrities who preach and unfair for me to place that on him.

Still, don't think he should (start?) do(ing?) that. :-)

I think there is clear mental and emotional abuse going on, and that moment was directly caused by it.

I just can't fathom how someone of Smith's caliber hasn't divorced her by now.

Really makes me wonder if there isn't some Scientology principles at play here, "forcing" him to stay with her.

I mean, if he can extricate himself from her/scientology, he could end up with a really good platform to talk about how spousal abuse isn't limited to men beating on their wives.

However, that seems rough to do when you have kids together.

If she is higher in Scientology rank than him maybe, or maybe just that belief system gives excuses for bad/unhealthy behavior (possession by space alien ghosts that cause humans to have emotional issues).

Clearly, Will thought Chris's joke was funny, then exploded when he saw his wife's reaction.

What really confuses me is that Chris's joke is referred to as 'making fun of' her bald head. That's also untrue. If anything, he was complimenting it that he's looking forward to the sequel to GI Jane. His joke merely referenced her bald head.

Even if Chris intended to make fun of her bald head…. The only reason it would make her mad is if she was already feeling shame for her bald head. Case in point, Will laughed at the joke, because likely he wasn't ashamed of it or thought the fact her head was bald as a negative.
