I still remember sitting in the front row of the Simon Theater in Brenham back in 1978 for the original. I haven't been this excited for a Superman movie since.

I have no historical interest in the DC movies, but this is legit a really well done trailer. The CG on the big monster is a bit bleh for me, but the vibe and tone looks great and really makes it feel like a "must see it in the theatre" event.

I remember the same thing sitting in our small town theater. The opening sequence & John Williams iconic score imparted a sense of awe & wonder on my 8 year old self. I seem to get a similar hopeful vibe from this trailer. Will be there opener by weekend most likely.

I feel you could make a movie about taking a dump, use these fonts and the music, and it would make $150m.

Holy balls. I legitimately teared up a bit at the playing of the JW Superman theme. This looks fantastic. Curiously it seems to take a similar angle as Man of Steel - the whole Superman acting alone, without regard for the government's input, well, maybe that was more BvS. My expectations just leaped over a tall building in a single bound. I'm thinking this will be my favorite 2025 movie.

This trailer finally has what I've been waiting to see in the previous trailers....that classic Gunn perfect combination of both fun and heart. Very excited about this movie now

I still think this looks like a TV show.

Granted, an extremely expensive one.

That said... I'm now more convinced than ever that it's also going to be a massive, massive hit.

It almost assuredly won't do Top Gun: Maverick numbers, but it's feeling more and more like it'll be the Top Gun: Maverick of the summer in terms of feel-good, universal praise, from kids to grandparents and every age in between. Everyone... and their dog... is going to see, and probably love, this thing.

I think audiences are starving for something big, bold, bright, and fun, hopeful and colorful, with a positive, optimistic message. Throw in the sheer spectacle and nostalgia factor via the Williams score (which, again, is 100% meant to invoke Top Gun: Maverick with the guitar), and this has all the makings to be the blockbuster of the summer, if not the year.

So i'm genuinely curious what you mean about the "looks like a tv show" comment. Because I'm not at all well versed in the technicalities of filmmaking, so I'm trying to figure out exactly what you mean.

As in the way it's filmed? Or the production value of costumes, props, etc?
TCTTS

Mainly in the way it's filmed, which is so clearly digital. It's not cinematic or filmic at all, as in there's not a lot of depth, contrast, shadows, or grain in the imagery, while the colors look a bit too saturated to me. The camera admittedly moves in fun, dynamic ways, but the framing of everything else just screams standard TV to me. It's kind of hard to explain.

Then yeah, the production design as well. The costumes especially just look a little too cheap and plastic for my taste (I still hate the collar on Superman's suit), and Metropolis doesn't feel as big, sprawling, or gleaming as I'd like it to be. It should feel like New York on steroids, not downtown Cleveland, where they shot it. Though maybe it feels different/better within the context of the movie itself.

That said, the overall look is clearly geared toward and will admittedly appeal more to kids/teens. This isn't meant to be the kind of blockbuster shot by Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, or even J.J. Abrams, which I much prefer. Instead, it looks as though it's meant to invoke a cartoon come to life, which is something we haven't really seen with the character before, but is probably the most appropriate. So, ultimately, I'm not too bothered by it. It's at least trying something different.

The trailer didn't really increase my excitement, but I'm rooting for James Gunn and hoping the movie is a success. I'm looking forward to seeing more in the second trailer. Either way, I'll be watching it as soon as it hits theaters.

Just FYI, this was basically the third trailer. We've had a teaser trailer, a five-minute "sneak peek," and now the full trailer. Granted, there will probably be one final shorter trailer just before the movie's release, but today's is considered the main/primary one...

You're not wrong there. I'm hoping it turns out like Thunderbolts*, a solid trailer, but an even better movie. I really enjoyed the story and emotion in Thunderbolts*. I trust James Gunn completely. I've enjoyed every superhero story he's written and directed so far.

Gotcha. And yeah, I can't disagree with any of it. But I think you make a good point about perhaps its an intentional "comic book/cartoon come to life" look. Which, purely for its uniqueness, I think I could come to appreciate.

I, OTOH, couildn't give two craps how it looks because I'm not a film nerd (ETA: and I don't mean this in a negative way). I am a Superman/Justice League/Superhero nerd and I think I'm gonna love it.

The lighter/brighter is way better than pissy/moody (which I think even Batman has leaned too far into).

Looks like the perfect combo of real world/sci fi Superman (Man of Steel) and old school comic book Supes (Christopher Reeve).

On the colors - it reminds me of the vividness of the first Spider-man movie which crushed it at the box office and of Wonder Woman 1984, which is awful, but the trailer was very bright and kinetic and fun.

This kind of superhero should be bold and bright. This isn't the anti-hero or the heaviness of Batman, it's Superman - the one person who is supposed to represent the best of all of us, and the one person who inspires us all to be better. I'm super excited for the theme of other people being better because of him - you see it in the trailer when he gets tossed into the street and some random dude sees him and helps him up. That's what I always want from these type of movies.

That almost never happens in the Marvel movies. There are no "everyday people" other than Steve Rogers' guys in the First Avenger and I guess the kid in Ironman 3 - at least that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

You need characters that have zero powers that are still willing to help to connect to the audience and say "See? This person can't fly or shoot lasers or anything, and they're still inspired to help." DC did that great in Wonder Woman with Chris Pine's team when they took out the Germans in their French town and they did it great in Man of Steel with Christopher Meloni's character who breaks command to tell the troops "This man is not our enemy" and then tries to fight the hot Kryptonian chick with a damn knife.

If you don't have those type of characters, you just have a bunch of CGI punchfests and one-liners. Fingers crossed. Your superhero needs visible examples of people who are worth fighting for.

There are all great examples and I 100% agree with all of this. Very well put.

Bold and bright, absolutely.

To be clear, though, my dislike of the look/color grading in this movie doesn't mean I endorse the dark, Snyder aesthetic at all.

I just prefer a different, more cinematic version of bold and bright. In terms look/lighting/contrast/colors only, in my perfect world, the below are the examples of how my "bold and bright" Superman movie would be shot. Basically some combo of Michael Bay (sans his franticness) and J.J. Abrams, where everything is filmic, colorful, in deep contrast, sun-drenched, and with lens flares galore...

I don't have any sore of bone to pick with you here, TC. In fact I don't really even understand difference at the technical level. I do want to watch Super 8 again now.

I just rewatched Super 8 last weekend. Damn good movie that still hit me in the feels with the theme of losing a parent and then learning to let go.

Sorry, I don't know how else to explain it. I don't mean this at all in an ******* way, but if you can't tell the difference between the cinematography in the trailers I linked to and the cinematography in the Superman trailer, I don't know what to tell you. The cinematography styles look wildly different to not just me, but a bunch of others on social media, people I've talked to, etc, who keep wondering why this movie looks the way it does, seeing as it definitely has a distinct, unique look. Again, my theory is the cartoon-come-to-life thing that I think Gunn is likely going for, but who knows for sure.

It's okay. I'm by no means an expert. I can't hear the difference between an MP3 and a WAV, either.

Funny you say that because I was thinking it basically looks like a spiritual successor to Smallville and I was kind of digging it. Especially excited that we're getting what seems like a joyful and bantery Clark-Lois relationship.

I like Amy Adams quite a bit, but yeah, she and Cavill had zero chemistry. Not to be agist, but that character would have popped so much more with a slightly younger actress, and one who brought a bit more zip/personality. Like, at the time, either an Emma Stone or an Olivia Wilde type.
