Yeah it's pretty obvious the baby she's carrying is Ser Manfred Dondarrion's and I haven't read the novellas but they talk about how he wants to basically create his own race of people so I'm fairly sure it's Ser Manfred's as there's no way she would be showing if Raymun just slept with her the night before.

If they had put the last scene before the previous, it would have been pretty close to a perfect episode. It needed to end with that last shot on the horses riding away with Arlen riding off.

I read it more as it was his actual wife and she was sleeping around while he was doing tourney stuff.

I definitively took it as her using him as a naive guy because she needed a husband for her baby.

Raymund's sequence with the whoo-ah was odd as hell. Loved the rest. Maeker looks like the worst dad in the seven, nine, seven kingdoms.

lol except Raymun heavily alludes to just meeting her snd initially needing her just for his wounds and armor and then…. *wink*

Our brave boy has lots of courage but might be a few nickels short of s dollar.

And I am starting to wonder if I am watching the same shows as everyone else. My favorite episodes of both Pluribus (The Gap) and now this episode are the lowest rated for each series. This didn't have the fighting scenes, but there was so much more depth in this episode across all the characters.

Side note, I am sure I missed it somewhere, but who is the chick they keep bringing in who didn't have her naming ceremony y ruined apparently? Is that one of the prince's daughters?

For Book Readers

Obviously Maekar seemingly not knowing Egg left is a huge deviation from what was assumed in the books. I think this is what will happen. They will leave the audience assuming Egg ran away, but in season 2 - if you recall in Sworn Sword, Egg produces his Targaryen sigil ring at a critical point in the story. I think we get a flashback then showing us that Maekar gave it to him in a scene where he basically says "No one can know who you are, but, if the need arises, show them this ring"

Truth be told, that's a terrific idea. I might just have to steal it.

All kidding aside, that would explain why Egg has the ring and close a minor plot hole for the TV audience very nicely.

The Ashford girl. I assume at some point Dunk will circle back around to her when she gets older? Why else would they even have so many non-plot scenes with her?

I received a coffee mug with this exact picture on it for father's day a few years back, and it still makes me giggle.

I'm going to give this one some time to settle then rewatch back to back. Betting it is much more impactful binged than week to week.

Really pleased with the show overall.

Next season is not my favorite of the three published stories but I'm sure it will still be really really good.

Sometime after Ashford, both King Daeron II and Baelor's sons die of during the Great Spring Sickness plague, so we will have King Aerys I on the throne next season. Going to be interesting seeing what post-plague Westeros is like. May not play into the plot at all, or maybe it will. I'm hoping that the plague will be used to tell of the death of Daeron and his grandsons which pave the way for Aerys.

I need Dunk in Storm's End next season for a week of debauchery.

And Raymun is a ride-or-die from this point on. I hope we check in with him every season.

Agreed and I can't think of one casting mistake they made and the pacing was near perfect. I really can't think of any major critique. I didn't really like the actor who portrayed Lord Ashford but that's a minor quibble.

My only small nitpick (and I didn't read the books so it may be explained there) was how quickly Duncan recovered from his injuries. When he was talking to Lyonel, the maester said Dunk was dying and then he walks around the town all day then rides off the very next day. That lance to the stomach alone would've taken a long time to heal.

To be fair, Lyonel did say that the maester was hot garbage and basically fired him on the spot.

Lyonel is probably my only gripe.

Actor did a great job making it his own - but Lyonel in the book is said to be as tall and strong Dunk and one of the deadliest warriors in the kingdoms. Supposed to be one of the most physically imposing figures in ASOIAF

I think they had to make a compromise on physicality and even discussed it on their podcasts. Heck, Claffey is 6-5 and supposed to be 7 feet in the novellas I believe.

Similarly Reacher is supposed to be 6-5 and Ritchson is probably 6-2 at best although pretty damn close (especially compared to Tom Cruise).

Speaking of Reacher the latest season featured Olivier Richters, who is 7-2 and would have been great as The Mountain and could have played Lyonel but would TOWER over Claffey and at this point I couldn't fathom another actor playing that role.

You lose a good amount of the comedic levity if he was wildly bigger. They did the same thing with Bobby B.

Not similar to GoT, but the best thing I've seen this year was Pluribus. Easy recommendation if you have Apple TV+. Season 1 is complete, so just watch 1 episode every Sunday night for 9 weeks.

Non-spoiler book reader question:

If I pick up The Hedge Knight to read, will that spoil anything for future seasons or is that pretty much all of what was covered in season 1?

This season mirrored Hedge Knight pretty directly.

You can read is standalone and not be spoiled

I like it. I wonder if that deviation is also a way to involve some of the actors from this season into next season. Obviously the novella is a whole new cast of characters sans Dunk and Egg, so maybe this was a film/show way of having some continuity, especially if they expand on the world with the great sickness, Maekar eventually ascent to the throne, and trying to sprinkle in more of the blackfyre rebellions

I thought the exact opposite. Most shows go from battle to the main characters bouncing around like they had spent a day at the spa. Here, all the belligerents, save Daeron, were beat to ****, and it showed.

My favorite scene (in 2 acts) was Daemon telling Dunk that Aerion wasn't always a monster, and Dunk, boldly, telling Maekar that Egg needed to go on the road because look at Daemon and Aerion. Very well done.

Same. The idea that Aerion wasn't always a monster and was a happy child (much like Egg) was the reason Dunk decided to take Egg. The realm has enough monsters. The realm needs good men.

Dunk has proven to himself and others that he can defend the innocent. But can he save innocence? He can protect harm from coming to others. But can he protect others from themselves? He must try.

I have seen some speculation that they will show some of Dunk & Egg in Old Town for their brief meeting with Aemon. Given that the events of Sworn Sword happen rather quickly - I'm not sure if there is enough there to really warrant a full 6 episodes. I feel pretty strongly that this isn't some sort of character assassination of Maekar. George has openly said he loves the character and thinks he is a very good man. I do think it's pretty likely he gave Egg his blessing and they'll tie that in with the ring. Some people online have already noticed that in earlier scenes he was wearing a ring on his pinky, and in the final scene that ring is gone - so the theory is supported. Egg loves his father, and openly defends him throughout the novellas as a good man - I don't see him openly defying him even further.

Edit: Potential spoilers!

Agreed on this episode showing more character depth. Most of the season is people just reacting and this was the first time you see characters processing. The ending is wild to me though. A hedge knight walks into a town and can only marginally join the tournament, and then he leaves surviving trial and passing on offers to join House Baratheon and Targaryen, all to roam freely which he could have done initially. Just seems somewhat odd and unfinished. I'm still happy to blame the brevity though, I'd be surprised if there is even 3 hours of true content.
