If you haven't kept up with the show, then it's on you not to visit the thread if you don't want it spoiled. No book spoilers, but if it's aired, it's fair game

It makes me sad that the last two books will never be finished, but the Dunk and Egg short stories are great and I'm excited about this. It will be way better than House of the Dragon.

Haha! This series blows hugely. HOTD is insanely better. Watched Epi 1 and 2 lof this Knight series last night. Won't watch any others. It was awful and uneventful trash.

Bye!

Don't understand the mindset of people to come on the thread only to s*** on it with their HIGHLY subjective takes. Must be a miserable person in real life.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow's episode and the rest of the series. I love origin stories and if Ser Duncan the Tall garnered 4 pages in the Knights Book (that Joffrey read when he was shaming Jamie in GoT) I'm excited to see what he does.

This has been the most accurate GRRM show to his writing I have seen yet FWIW.

Been pretty wonderful as someone who has read the novellas.

Someone explain the fortune teller for me. Wasn't she basically describing Aerys and not Aegon?

It's accurate, Egg becomes king and dies in a fire at a very old age, he becomes unliked by the ruling elite because his time with Ser Duncan made him partial to small folk

It's wonderful man. They have nailed almost everything so far. Castings for Duncan and Egg are spectacularly good.

How it was in the show was exactly in line with the book.

Almost all of the show has been thus far

Dialogue has been virtually word for word

Dunk and Egg alone are worth watching this show so far, not counting anything else that has also been good and holds promise.

I'm loving this show. It's the exact opposite of GoT and HotD since it gives you hope for someone who just tries to do good and isn't immediately killed. Having listened to the audiobooks already I knew what this show could be and it's lived up to those expectations.

GoT you had characters you could root for like Tyrion and Jon, HotD not so much, but I get your point.

What gives me hope is you have dialogue lifted straight from the novella and that these books have already been written, 3 of them, and George claims to be writing a few more (ha ha ha, I'll believe it when I see it).

In other words, I'm looking forward to the first 3 seasons of this show and after that if George hasn't written at least a 4th one I'll probably tune out because when the show is going off a framework of ideas it sucks.

Really enjoying this show - only complaint is that it isn't any longer, which I know has already been discussed. It's weird to consume a Sunday night HBO premium drama and have it only be half an hour.

Great episode (even though they have to end on a brutal cliffhanger). Egg being Aegon was blatantly foreshadowed, so not a shock there. Loved the song about the 'cripple *****' and Dunk/Egg's musings about her honor and 'dogged spirit' lol. Raymon Fossoway openly speaking against the Targaryens with someone he literally just met like a day ago is crazy and shows how far their myth has fallen.

My only head scratcher was the scene with Egg and Ser Rhysling (? the eyepatch Knight)? It was so unnaturally truncated that he's obviously going to have some role to play later, but it was just very jarring and cutting away felt like a post production 'oh yeah we need to introduce this guy somewhere..."

But the climax of the show was obviously the last scene with Dunk striking a Prince. Loved that it took 4 grown men to subdue him (a glimpse into the future perhaps?). Idk how he isn't going to be executed immediately even if Egg is able to vouch for him...but obviously the show wouldn't exist if he was lol.

Accidentally spoiled myself on a major plot point by googling Summerhall. (Wanted to see where it was on the map.)

And people rejoiced the day Aegon the Unlikely died because Prince Rhaegar Targaryen was somehow born healthy amongst the fire. I think it's a typical GRRM double meaning.

Great episode. I was trying hard to catch all the lyrics in Egg's song but found it online.
Quote:

Prince Baelor was the first born
Prince Maekar sprang out last
Daemon was the *******,
so they kicked his *******
Grass is green in summer,
green grass I adore
But grass is red all over
when you kill a rebel
Horses die in battle
This battle was the front
Blackfyre's not a trueborn,
he came from the wrong
Country was in peril,
The Anvil was a rock
The Hammer smashes the *******
with his giant veiny
Host of Dornish spearmen

Is the backstory of the song generally known or is all Blackfyre stuff spoiler since it hasn't been laid out fully in GoT or this show? For anyone curious about the Blackfyre Rebellion:
Egg's grandfather, Aegon IV was a corrupt king. He sired lots of *******s and was always cheating on his sister-wife. His legitimate (maybe) Targaryen heir Daeron succeed Aegon IV as king, but when Aegon died he legitimized all his *******s.

There were rumors Daeron was the product of Naerys, sister-wife of Aegon, and Aemon, brother to Aegon IV and Naerys. Never proven but if that prophecy is to be believed from HotD, the parentage doesn't matter because Daeron is descended from Viserys I-Rhaenyra-Viserys II which still keeps the bloodline intact all the way to Dany and Jon.

Anyway, once Aegon IV legitimized his *******s, basically one of them, Daemon (double Targaryen from his father and mother), took the name Blackfyre and was pretty popular due to looking and acting more like a warrior than his bookworm nerd brother Daeron. Daemon and another half-brother Aegor rebelled against Daeron for a few reasons.

When we get to Egg singing the song, he is explaining how his uncle Baelor and father Maekar battled and fought off the Blackfyre threat.

GoT definitely had characters to root for, but you were always waiting for something bad to happen to them. I don't think anyone at this point believes that GRRM will finish writing anything in the GoT world. The most recent work that I can even think of that he is confirmed to have been involved with was writing Elden Ring. I'd sooner think he writes another video game before any new GoT material is published.

Need a VR/AR app that layouts out the family trees, Westeros map, house sigils, etc. around a video stream of the show to keep track of all this stuff. My head is still full of LOST info and work stuff. Out of space for remembering the screwed up Targ tree with repetitive naming and side piece babies

What is the timeframe covered by the existing novellas? I'm wondering is season 2 will take a major time leap requiring a new actor for Egg.

1.5-2 years. The same actor could still play Egg for next season.

You might look into The World of Ice and Fire or Fire & Blood. The World of Ice and Fire is basically a comprehensive history of the seven kingdoms. Fire & Blood is the book House of the Dragon is based on, but it is written like a history book. It goes into great detail of the Targaryen family history and is actually pretty entertaining if you're into that sort of thing. It goes into everything from family trees, to line of succession, to battles inside and outside the family, to descriptions of the different dragons that each of them rode.

One thing about this episode didn't make sense to me at all:
Why did the joust coordinator guy go to Dunk and tell him that his opponent was going to purposefully LOSE the fight? Dunk obviously wants to win, he wouldn't need bribing to do so. When both parties are in on a fix, to me it makes it more obvious. Is it a test of some sort?
