Sort of the beauty of Dunks simplistic view.

He starts with a dream of being a knight. Of holding to the virtues, nobility and mystique of oaths.

Over the course of Ashford he sees that the real world is different and these great houses are flawed, often self-serving and have hidden agendas.

He leaves Ashford knowing he doesn't want to be sucked into that corruption and to live out the virtues that Arlyn taught him, and what he'll teach Egg to make him better than his brothers

I'm more than cool with the start and end. It's the path there, happening in just 2-3 days of story and with so little arc that feels kind of sitcomy or something.

Non-spoiler book reader question:

If I pick up The Hedge Knight to read, will that spoil anything for future seasons or is that pretty much all of what was covered in season 1?

This season mirrored Hedge Knight pretty directly.

You can read is standalone and not be spoiled

Got it, thanks!

I think Martin would need to come back from the dead MANY times in order to finish.

At this point he should be 100% focused on more Dunk and egg books, there's no way he's finishing Winds of Winter and DEFINITELY no way he's going to complete Dream of Spring so might as well pump out some 100 page Dunk and Eggers.

My only critique was the closing credits song choice; "Sixteen Tons."

I'm in the camp that he's already finished them and will release the posthumously.

I don't think he can bear fans not being happy with his endings

lol you think George is sitting on 2 completed novels and is just waiting to die before enjoying the money and fanfare they would bring? If he was capable of finishing the story, why wouldn't he do so before B&W took a steaming dump on the TV series?

I mean it's been many years.

He was probably in the process of writing the final two when those late seasons came out.

You can't tell me that he didn't give the showrunners of GoT some outlines to go off of.

Those seasons got horrible fan feedback and he went back to the drawing board. I don't think he wants to see the negativity if and when they do come out.

For Book Readers

Obviously Maekar seemingly not knowing Egg left is a huge deviation from what was assumed in the books. I think this is what will happen. They will leave the audience assuming Egg ran away, but in season 2 - if you recall in Sworn Sword, Egg produces his Targaryen sigil ring at a critical point in the story. I think we get a flashback then showing us that Maekar gave it to him in a scene where he basically says "No one can know who you are, but, if the need arises, show them this ring"

Truth be told, that's a terrific idea. I might just have to steal it.

All kidding aside, that would explain why Egg has the ring and close a minor plot hole for the TV audience very nicely.

While it is fun, it could easily be a death sentence to Dunk if someone happens on them and decides to rescue Egg

He can also procrastinate for many years as well. I think he knows he has way too many characters, too many open plot threads and his garden (as he likes to call it) has spiraled so far out of control there's no way prune it.

Just finished it. 10/10 for me, it's got such a unique style with the awkward/funny parts mixed in.

I think the best actor and character is Egg. "Are you mad?" "Is that relevant?" had me cracking up

Such a great show. Any questions we had along the way all got answered and there is soild transition into Season 2.

I think my favorite thing is how not one of the houses knew who Arlan of Pennytree was after being a knight for 40-50 years. But over the course of a few days everyone knows who Ser Duncan is, for better or worse.

Need to film season 2 while Egg is still small and before he grows up too much. Part of his charm is his size and tiny voice.

100% - and with the next 2 books already written I honestly think they could easily shoot the next 2 seasons back to back. From every production insider I've listened to, this show which is mostly a single set location with a mostly singular POV character, filming this show should be very streamlined. Obvioiusly they need some extra time for costume and prop design, but I think HBO can and will pump out this show very quickly.

Each season is only 6 episodes and between 30-60 minutes. They should be able to do 2 seasons in the time it takes other shows to one season where they are 8-10 1hr episodes.

That's correct and that's the joke. This isn't a spoiler because it's not actually cannon (yet), but a lot of people theorize that Brienne of Tarth is a descendent of Dunk because he spent some time there. Tarth isn't in Dorne.

FINISH THE STORY GEORGE

This actually makes me think that GRRM has finished the books (all of them) and doesn't want to publish them until he dies (or at least expects to finish them before he dies). I had previously thought he would never finish them but maybe he will or has, and has told the showrunner the endings.

I don't remember details from the novella, so not spoilers, but I'm pretty sure they don't go to Dorne. Not sure if that's a change or the post author is wrong.

The second Novella is I think a year after Ashford.

They go to Dorne and Old Town in between those books.

The next story continues in The Reach, not Dorne. Not sure if that is an HBO deviation or not.

Canonically, Ashford is not too far from where the next one should take place. Like a few days ride.

And Martin has confirmed -- or more accurately -- not denied Brienne and Dunk are related. This is 10 year old info.
