I just realized the vibe I was getting watching last night, especially the scene where Dunk makes some eggs in the medieval skillet. It's Shrek and Donkey!!! Even the music kind of has a Shrek vibe.

The music to me sounds like The Witcher meets TLOU.

That's intentional! After the premiere, HBO did a post show interview with Ira Parker and he says Shrek specifically was an inspiration! The opening scene where Dunk defecates immediately after the title card was an homage to Shrek when that movie opens with Shrek taking a page from the "Fairy Tale" book to wipe his ass in the out house!

I have been blown away how good Ansell is. The kid has chops. Does not come off as a child actor. The comedy aspect of this requires another level of skill, and he's delivering all along the way from his lines to his expressions.

His face after the hair on his stones exchange, and then also mocking each other about the salt beef and ale. Especially the "good" at the end.

What is the timeframe covered by the existing novellas? I'm wondering is season 2 will take a major time leap requiring a new actor for Egg.

1.5-2 years. The same actor could still play Egg for next season.
Related q, where does this fall in the chronology of the other shows?

I didn't see that coming and damn that made for a fun ending (in hindsight some obvious foreshadowing). The banter in this episode was genuinely fun, really enjoyed it, and agreed that the kid is absolutely killing it.

I read it takes place 90 years prior to GOT.

I told my wife during this episode that he is killing his role and deserves an award of some kind for his performance.

I don't know how someone complains about this show and thinks house of dragon is any better. I quit HOTD after one season because I didn't care about a single character in that ****ed up family. This is much smaller in scale but the characters are already way better.

HOTD is slow, takes itself way too seriously & has unlikable arseh*le characters.
Dunk & Egg you can't help but root for. This show is great!

I have watched 2 eps of HotD, and 3 of this one. This show also feels like a classic HBO show for some reason.

The whole sequence with him getting ready for the tournament was so great. Training the horse, running around with the lance and sword. I could have easily watched an entire episode of that.

For the non book readers (please don't reply if you know), do y'all think Dunk was actually Knighted?

We're told that Ser Arlan knighted him just before he died but we don't actually see it and we have already seen flashbacks that contradict what Dunk has said:
He tells Plummer that Ser Arlan always meant to Knight him (we see a flashback where Arlan says no such thing).

And the way he replies to Ser Steffon Fossoway about the sword being 'his by rights' was odd and defensive.

Dunk is obviously an honest person, but it would be an interesting plot point to tell the story of this 'legendary' and noble Knight that was actually never made a Knight.

I haven't read the books but felt the show was telling us that Dunk took some liberties.

Season 2 could have been very good, but instead they just decided to not progress the story hardly at all. And now they've come out and said they're going to wrap up the show in 2 more seasons. Very baffling decision making. I don't have high hopes for them being able to wrap up the remaining story that needs to be told in only 2 seasons..

Didn't read the books but I'd say the show made it clear that he didn't knight him by doing all but saying "he didn't knight him"

Lol some "liberties" would be a kind way of describing a squire lying about his knighthood

I am still enjoying HOD, but yes, some whiffs in season 2. The whole Daemon-Harrenhall aspect in particular, what a useless time sink

I think the story has moved passed the "is he a knight or not" given the events at the puppet show.

Same, HOTD has the same feel as the original series, sometimes gets a bit bogged down in details but goes to some really interesting places.

This is more of a buddy cop adventure set in the same general place, lots more banter and humor and a bit lighter on the gratuitous violence (though damn some of those jousting scenes were brutal).

I don't think he was knighted, too much dancing around the subject, too much head down type of reaction from Dunk, unless there is some plot payoff that Arlen truly did it in his dying minutes. I mean why show he has a woman and a 10" unit and not show him knighting Dunk.

One could make an argument is that maybe Dunk's entire character is built around the fact that living chivalrous and by the values make a knight, not the act of being "knighted"

Oh for sure! It's just an interesting idea that a legendary Knight is actually no Knight. His story as this honorable, virtuous hero began with a lie.

Do you think Dunk was really knighted?

Let's examine this allegory:

[Egg] Do you think her name was really Alice?
[Dunk] Mm, no. I just think Alice is a nice name to write a song to.
[Egg] That means there was a cripple girl who was so good at pleasuring men in their bums that they saw fit to celebrate her in song, yet they could not bother credit her true name?
[Dunk] If there's a lesson in that, it's for wiser men than me to say.
[Egg] Perhaps it is a story of honor.
[Dunk] Honor?
[Egg] A misfortuned girl making the best of her natural gifts.
[Dunk] One might wish for more.
[Egg] But is this not the act of a dogged spirit? Giving more than what is asked? "The whole arm bone," as it were.
[Dunk] Perhaps her name does not matter, then. It's… it's her story that abides.
[Egg] Her name is Hope, ser. Belongs to all who invoke it.

The BEST part of Dunk's origin is that he never needed the official title. He is living the virtues and Egg (who has witnessed some bad stuff) understands that more than anyone.

For sure, a perfect allegory! Do we know why Ser Arlan never Knighted Dunk? Did it never occur to him? or did he not think Dunk was 'worthy'?
