I haven't read the books either I just looked at some of the succession graphics posted on the internet.

You haven't been entirely spoiled rest assured. The previous post was not accurate.

I haven't read the books, but have seen the family tree from previous searches during GoT and HotD. Plus the YouTube algorithm is pretty good at providing spoilers at any moment after watching one video about the show.

Well if we are to believe the old fortune teller, he will be aptly named Aegon The Unlikely. The fourth son of a fourth son? Bruh……………………

I didn't think he was knighted before Ep3, but I think him not wanting or not being able to knight someone else is in Ep3 is further confirmation. He wanted his new friend to actually be a knight, if his own lie was ever discovered.

I have very much enjoyed this so far 100x more than house of dragon. However, anyone starting this should just wait for all the episodes to come out. Episodes are too short and now massive blue balls waiting for next episode.

My biggest question at this point is, assuming the fortune teller is correct about Egg becoming king, how do all the people ahead of him in line die?

Assuming the worst case scenario for the trial of seven, we would lose Baelor, Maekar, and two of Egg's brothers.

That would still leave Baelor's kids (I think one son?), and Aemond, who we know renounces the throne to become a Maester.

That would be insane to clear that many Targs off the table in one fell swoop though.

Plus, it's not clear if this is a fight to the death or not.

Do y'all want book spoilers or not? The answer is clearly known, but....

I may have missed it discussed here, but don't forget Maekar briefly mentioned another of his sons in Ep 3.

Is it a book spoiler if it's been mentioned umpteen times by Maester Aemon, possibly Daenerys, and Joffrey during the mainline GoT show?

This show is the best thing on TV at this moment, and one of my favorites of the last several years. I'm not sure how they found actors that could capture who Dunk and Egg are so perfectly. I'm hoping the non-novella readers are just as happy with the show, so far.

I'm going to be sad when this ends. I'm hoping the delay between seasons is kept to a minimum, especially given the lack of significant CGI or multiple set locations.

I considered that as well, but then in the Ser Arlen flashback it looked like Arlen did not know the words either and maybe Dunk just never knew or learned what they were b/c he never figured he's be knighting someone. He's only a hedge knight after all.

I think the show has done everything in it's power to tell you that Dunk was never Knighted without outright explicitly saying it.

"It's mine by right" - 'That's an odd thing to say'
"Ser Arlen always meant for me to be a Knight" *cuts to flashback where he said no such thing*

I mean one of the biggest examples is the opening scene when he buries Ser Arlen and says "I would bury your sword but it would just rust"...to me that's an admission that he was never meant to keep it/have it. Burying it would be a 'waste' so instead he keeps the sword, not because Ser Arlen bequeathed it to him but he rationalized it to himself as "his by right."

I agree with all of that but it would be interesting if they again cut back to his memories and they show after he asks if he could be a knight and Ser Arlen just spits out some food it stays a beat longer and he says "I suppose you could."

They could also do another flashback to him knighting Dunk and not knowing the words and showing Dunk looking up and seeing that same robin in the tree that he saw when he was having explosive diarrhea.

I haven't read any of the novellas so I have no idea but to the poster who asked if the non-readers are enjoying this I can say for myself emphatically yes! I wish it was Feb 15th already! It would be nice if HBO could release it on Friday like they did the last one but then you'd have to wait 10 days for the finale and I'm sure that would suck as well.

Oh ya they could always show something to contradict that sentiment, but as of right now it is heavily alluding to the fact that Dunk was never Knighted. I have not read a single page of the novellas and only know what has been shown on GoT.

What I find curious is they show a flashback of Dunk and Ser Arlen laughing and sharing food as well as another flashback in training where he's clearly kicking Arlen's ass.

Dunk has said Ser Arlen was honorable and wanted to protect the innocent (we also see a flashback of him giving money to one of the townfolk) so by these accounts he was a "good knight." We also have seen Dunk as a morally good person so the question is why wouldn't Ser Arlen not want to knight Dunk?

Maybe the novellas never bother to answer that question and it's up to the reader to decide and perhaps that's the way the showrunner wants to portray it but it is very curious that a knight with no heirs wouldn't want to pass down his sword and shield to his squire, his longtime companion he raised and instructed and disciplined.

Random q: do we know who the brunette in yellow is that they show a couple times in the crowd during the last few minutes? I thought it might have been one of the *****s that Dunk talked to in the first episode or two but don't know why they'd draw our attention there.

Idk but I think it's clear that Dunk's 'memory' of Ser Arlen is slightly...'exaggerated.'

She's Lord Ashford's daughter. The whole Tourney is happening for her 'Nameday' (birthday). We met her in episode 2 when Dunk was spying on the Targs and she speculated that the missing Targ boys were 'murdered.'

What happened to the Puppeteer that painted Dunk's shield? I thought they speculated she would be killed but I think the blacksmith said she bailed town. It seemed like she and Dunk had a connection so I assume we will see her again possible after Dunk wins the trial by combat

While I know Aerion called for a Trial of Seven because he didn't think Dunk could get 7 together, it also shows how down the Targs really are.

Aerion's 7: Him, his old man, his DRUNK brother, 3 Kings Guard, and a random lower house knight of dubious loyalties. Could he really not rally up 2 better quality knights? Apparently not.

As far as knight vs not, I think it's substance over form. I think there are more than enough signs that he never formally knighted Dunk, but he did everything to teach him how to be a proper knight.

She also fake punched Dunk and got him to flinch, which led to his discovery by Maekar and Baelor so she actually put everything into motion without realizing it.

If anything that helped him get into the tournament and it had little to do with him punching and kicking Egg's brother. I think that moment between them let her know that he was likely a gentle giant most of the time.

I think Arlen knew how good and honorable of a person Dunk is and didn't want to Knight him because he would be "eaten alive" by those less honorable (actual honorable knights/houses at that time seem to be in short supply). Dunk certainly seems to have a simplistic view on life where everything is either good or bad, with not much in between.

I also think Dunk didn't want to knight the guy not because he didn't know the words but because he didn't want to taint his knighthood should Dunk's own deceit be discovered one day.
