He is probably looking to retire soon. Republicans are supposedly going to keep the Senate after mid terms, with the off off season elections this year, it gives me pause. If the R's lose the Senate the D's will not allow Trump to appoint another Justice.

It came as federal grand jurors in Washington have repeatedly refused to approve indictments against fellow city residents, amid the president's aggressive policing surge, a highly unusual pattern.

Uhmmm? Okay, let's unpack this. Dual sovereigns. So state charges and federal charges are different. Federal grand juries consider whether to find probable cause if federal crimes have been committed.

State grand juries determine if State crimes have been committed. Cases can often have both involved, federal and state crimes BUT composition of the grand jury can only consider the crimes, federal OR state, for which they have been convened. Crim Law 101. Law students know that difference.

First husband was a tax attorney. He had some clients who were...shall we say not completely earning their income from legit sources...<cough>

Back then, one could get away with declaring income from "miscellaneous sources" and that what was he insisted his clients do. Declare the income along with what other cover business they had. Because the IRS could not report anything, except tax evasion back then. And frankly, as long as taxes were being paid even on illegally earned income (which is traceable even with a cash based business) IRS didn't GAS.

I was literally posting the week after Trump was elected that Clarence Thomas needed to retire immediately

we can't redo a Ruth Bader Ginsburg in reverse.

Thomas needs to help select his youthful replacement and let us keep that seat and the majority!

He can announce retirement nearing the end of this term. Give Trump a heads up in late March, early April. Thune can shepherd it through before the election with advance notice.

I suspect any judge he appoints to any court in any state with any democratic senator will get blue slipped and will be DOA.

That tradition needs to end. One Senator should not have veto power like that.

Agree. Even with Harry Reid ending the filibuster for inferior court judges, the blue slip is just stupid. Majority Leader should just ignore them and call for a vote on nominees anyway.
