Vail offers a solid veterans and and insane active service member and dependents pass discount. It's like crazy cheap for active service & dependents.

It's like $600 for veteran and $200 for active/retired.

Yup, and they haven't gone up too much over the years. The first year they did it was 110 in honor of the 10th Mtn Div. It's why I switched over when I moved back. Used to get the old Copper Winter Park 10 days at steamboat pass.

Skied Jackson Hole today. They are about 65% open. A lot of the terrain that is closed is way too difficult for me anyway. Conditions surprisingly good despite fairly warm weather. Didn't wait in line longer than 2 minutes all day. Supposed to snow tonight.

Ski'd Wolf Creek today. First time here. Great stuff. 100% open. They received about 7" in the last 2 days but 71" for the season. Got into some tree double blacks with my kids and the snow was deep. I was very impressed with the terrain and snow conditions. We ski one more day tomorrow the. Fly home Monday. Lift tickets are about $100 and the food/beer is half what we pay at typical resorts. Very impressed.

Rained pretty much all day at Schweitzer. However, the next 5 days on the NOAA have me feeling optimistic. 10-18" for Tuesday alone. If that happens I might have to run up there on Wednesday.

We flew into Durango from DFW. 1.5 hour direct flight. Little over an hour from Durango to Pagosa springs.

Rented a cabin 15 min on the pass side of Pagosa. So only 20 min from cabin to ski resort.

Ski maintenance question, how often to wax and brush during season? I did a wax and brush before my last trip, but only 3 days of skiing. Should I bother another coat or wait a few more days on the snow? Don't want to go through the effort if it isn't useful.

If it's like today I'd switch but PC is supposed to get some snow this week. The biggest problem has been the warm temps. It snowed most of the day today on canyons side but it was also near 40*. Base is damn near bare. First time I've seen the golf course over here.

A lost can change in two weeks but if it doesn't get better then I would 100% change. The runs that were open today got chopped up pretty bad by lunch time. I was skiing knee high moguls on groomed blue runs by 1.

Base, edges and wax after 3-5 ski days. 99.9% won't, but they should. It will make a difference.

It's 10 minutes of work. Buy a roto-brush and hard file guides (none of those Swix click adjusters with base bevel/edge in one tool - Sun Valley tools, ftw).

Dumping today. Might get a foot. Too bad we're leaving tomorrow.

I see Park City has 55 of 349 runs open as of this morning. When/the timing do they usually update that and open up more (obviously once snow has fallen)?

Probably a better question for Bayou as I think he worked ski patrol before.

First they need the snow, then they go out and plow it into thin spots and groom it. Next comes ski patrol to mark it safe to ski and then it opens up.

A little less time for the ungroomed runs. I bet you'll see a lot of blacks and double blacks open today.

also realize they may not be open depending on what time it is
at lots of mountains some lifts don't open till later and some runs don't either

of course some and possibly lots the way this winter has gone, are not open yet b/c of snow conditions...but in morning some of it might be as they open the mountain(s) up

I just can't justify spending $115 on 1 file guide. Especially if you need multiple angles.

What do you guys put on you base/edge?

Jr skied PC yesterday and said the snow at the top was great but the rain at the base had him wet at 4 coming out. In Heber/ Midway and had rain all night but dumping snow now. Should be great skiing this afternoon and the next couple days. Currently watching the fireplace and heavy snow thru the windows.

It's $36.

https://www.tognar.com/svst-pro-edge-side-bevel-guides-aluminum-w-ss-plate/?searchid=453328&search_query=Sun+Valley+Ski+Tools

Shims are $20.

Start with factory angles: https://www.evo.com/guides/ski-edge-bevel -

Generally, 1/2 or 1/3 depending on where you live and the ski. De-tuning is an old practice. Feather .5-1/0 around your tips/tails (dependent on your ski's contact point).
