Liverpool have really started to do it with VVD too. Again if they aren't going to call it then so be it right now. I just think there needs to be some changes made to throw-ins and set pieces in the EPL next year. Mostly just how they officiate them, although I could argue some rule changes.

They just have to get more from open play again. The EPL is the best league in the world, so treat it like it. Make the game great again for lack of a better term.

I agree, it's pretty tough to watch many of the games, going back to the early 2000s brand of English soccer

But it's effective and looking at the champions league table it seems that this brand of soccer is winning

I don't think the "brand of soccer" is why the English teams have done well in the CL. Liverpool, Man City, Newcastle, Chelsea have not been reliant on set pieces to win CL games. English teams have the most money and attract some of the best players so their rosters tend to be better than most (exceptions being Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, and PSG). But also teams in the CL are the best in their respective leagues and tend to play more expansive, open football. That is how they win games in their domestic leagues. Anthony Gordon mentioned, and I'm paraphrasing here, that CL games were easier bc you actually got to play football. I imagine they are much more enjoyable to play as well.

Agree. It's just boring and ugly to watch. Everyone is talking about...Slot discussed it, all the pundits, youtubers, etc. Arsenal vs Chelsea should have been great,..but all goals came from corners/set pieces. And it's everybody, not just them. Again, it's made any match more of a toss up than ever before, but this has turned into anything but beautiful football. Rugby style, low block, and play for corners/throw ins sucks.

Example 1,656,985 of why pace matters so much in this sport. Wolves just absolutely overwhelming on the pitch right now with speed, speed and more speed.

Gravenberch needs to come off. He's going to get a red sooner than later.

Slot probably won't wait too long to make changes in this game.

You will never see a sequence quite like that set piece. Gakpo's foot actually prevents Jones from easily chesting the ball into the freaking net.

Liverpool this year in a nutshell.

More dropped points to bottom feeders. That's the PL this year.

I'm not even mad. This roster is so broken, along with the league.

That's the PL this year is a perfect catch phrase.

The only other thing I'll add is that Gakpo is a trash can. Get him out of the lineup and out of this team.

PL play aside, Liverpool is a mess and in bad shape. Roster, mgmt, sloppy, old, slow, etc …it's all of it. They are looking like they are on the path and play of Man U the last few years.

And not starting or playing Rio more is coaching malpractice by Slot

Which is why CL or not, they have to go out and continue to spend big money this summer. They neglected to do it the last two years and cannot afford to stand pat this summer because they got into the Europa league instead. You do that and you're setting yourself back multiple years.

ETA: LV xG 2.25; wolves xG 0.51. That's the PL this year.

Liverpool has not and will not spend money they don't have. If we don't get CL next season, we aren't spending big in the summer.

My brain understands it, but my heart does not. I do not want to go back to where we were before Klopp where we hover around 3rd through 7th and occasionally get lucky and make a run, but never have any sustained success.

Exactly. These targets that are being mentioned are not happening if we don't get CL. The targets become the Plan B- or C options. It cannot be stressed enough how critical CL qualification is for the club. They will still spend, but it won't be at near the level or quality that we are needing. Last night was an absolutely ridiculous display of football and all that is wrong with this team. The blueprint to beat us is so so so obvious and we play right into EVERY single match.

I agree that if we don't make CL we might not go out and purchase the likes of Olise, Barcola etc., but they will still 100% be buying other like players such as Mateus Mane, Yankuba Minteh and that caliber of guy. Very talented guys with less pedigree.

Again, Liverpool cannot sit on their hands and pout this summer if they don't make CL. Absolutely cannot. They have to continue to use their chest of money they've amassed over the last 5 years whether that's buying the proven elite player or the unproven talented player.

Adam Wharton turned it on in the last 10 mins of the first half vs Tottenham. Exquisite distribution on Palace's 2nd and 3rd goals.

Spurs down to 10 men and losing 3-1 at the half. Fans leaving en masse. I personally think it would be great if they were relegated

I think he's fantastic. He has the ability to take over a game in midfield from a defensive and passing perspective, and I think that profile of player is what we are missing right now the most outside of wingers with speed. When Wirtz was in the lineup I don't think it was as glaring because Wirtz can do everything midfield, including pick up the ball in midfield and advance it by breaking lines etc. Since he's been out it's been almost non-existent from that perspective.

Gravenberch is quite honestly terrible at it. Mac Allister can pass the ball and advance it but he's so susceptible to the press because he's so damn unathletic. Szbo can a bit but he's being asked to press like a mad man, so if the ball is turned over he's not in those positions. Thus we have no one in midfield to get the ball forward and VVD and Ibou have to do it

I say all of this absolutely loving Elliot Anderson as well. Absolutely love him and think he's class. He's just not the type of guy I think we need the most even though having both would be a freaking dream and a half.

Friday Transfer Gossip

Man City seemed poise to sign Anderson. I don't think Liverpool are ever quite out of it until the ink is dry on the paper, but it would be frustrating to lose another transfer target to City, especially after seeing the stability that Guehi has brought to their defense. I hope that means that when we miraculously qualify for CL (I bet we finish 5th and sneak in), we then use that money on Diomande and Wharton. But man do I love Elliot Anderson. A midfield of Adam Wharton, Anderson, Szoboszlai, and Wirtz would really have us on cloud nine.

I disagree on the Ryan Gravenberch assessment. He is just not a No.6. But he is a fantastic no. 8. He can be so good at breaking the lines if he isn't primarily tasked with no. 6 duties. Gravenberch Turns.

I know the chances of us signing both Wharton and Anderson are slim. Probably non-existent. But how fun would that iteration of Liverpool be? I wonder then if Wirtz could play a false 9/Bobby Firmino role? Could a 4-3-3 work in today's PL with everyone sitting low against us and using speed to catch us on the counter or stacking the box on a set piece and hoping for chaos? Idk if it would work, but having Wharton sit in the 6, letting Szoboszlai and Anderson wreak havoc as 8s, Wirtz in the false 9, and then some combo of Diamonde, Ekitike, and Isak pacing up top. I think Isak and Ekitike would both flourish as inverted wingers coming in from the left side (it's where he found the most joy at Newcastle). Kerkez and Frimpong would provide width on the attack. Like I said, not sure it would work, but it might be better and at least more exciting than the current product we are trotting out there...

Rio gets the start on the LW with Gakpo inexplicably continuing to start, this time in the center of the park. Same midfield three but Gomez moves to CB and Jones slots in at RB. Kerkez makes way for Robertson. Mamardashvili can't buy game time as Alisson continues in goal. Overall, pretty strong lineup, not that we have much choice. Would have loved to see Nyoni get some meaningful minutes.

Liverpool Lineup vs Wolves:
Alisson; Jones, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister; Salah, Gakpo, Ngumoha
Subs: Mamardashvili, Konate, Kerkez, Wirtz, Chiesa, Ekitike, Nyoni, Frimpong, Morrison

Is Marma that bad? Alisson needs a break and Marma needs the game time.

Up 2-0 68 minutes in ....get some young guys in.

Wirtz in as I type this.

Loved what I saw from Rio today. He rarely gets to start, when the game is more structured than when we are chasing late. He had an incredibly high rate of attack in that game and really caused wolves some stress. It's what you like to see from really great wingers. He steadily made them more and more uncomfortable. It's a huge psychological weapon to have a player like him attack all game long. I hope we get to see it more often.
