What if they added a 20 sec rebuttal for an opposing viewpoint after every political statement? Hopefully performed by James Woods

This is the kind of crap celebs should get sh/t for. I can respect those who walk the walk, but I'm right there with some of you when it comes to those who preach but don't do...
What a joke... this has to be one of the most eye-rolling, hollow "statements" I've ever seen. I'm so glad she's getting called out for this complete virtue-signaling act.
I say just talk about movie making and crap like that. The Oscars are already way too damn long (at least they have been.. not sure about last few years). Don't waste time up there talking about football, computer science, politics or anything else that they don't have expertise about.tk for tu juan said:

If Meet the Press or the NFL commentators started talking a lot about Hollywood, they would lose viewers too.
Nope... it's not just "hearing" political thought that is the problem. I hear that all the time without issue.tk for tu juan said:aTmAg said:I say just talk about movie making and crap like that. Alright, what if there is a SAP channel that bleeps out all political thoughts during the Oscars?
They should just mute the sound and put this up on screentk for tu juan said:aTmAg said:I say just talk about movie making and crap like that. A lot of us feel that way about actual politicians.aTmAg said:Nope... it's not just "hearing" political thought that is the problem. It's providing ratings boost to jackasses who are fighting to have our rights infringed. It's going to take a while of them shutting up to gain these viewers back.
I'm not so sure. For example, I sometimes listen to Mark Levin on my drive home. He's a smart guy. But his callers are DUMBASSES. They call in and say nothing more than "you are a great American" and talk about how Trump is saving the world. Those guys don't bring anything to the table IMO. So if it happens to be the top of the hour, then I'll listen, if it's the bottom of the hour and he is taking calls, I turn it off. The same is true with Hollywood. If they got up there and said, "build a wall", then I wouldn't celebrate, I would roll my eyes and think to myself "shut up".fig96 said:A lot of us feel that way about actual politicians.aTmAg said:Nope... it's not just "hearing" political thought that is the problem. Whether you agree with them or not, people who get a platform are going to use it. It's been happening in entertainment and sports for years, it's just more magnified now with our 24/7 news coverage and social media. If someone started spouting how great the current administration was they'd be praised all over forum 16 for being informed and enlightened and using their platform for the "right" things.
Understood, but the Oscars are losing viewers over time. I assume that is a concern for them. I'm just expressing my opinion on how they can improve that somewhat.Quote:
You don't like what a few had to say (which, again, was an incredibly minor portion of the evening as several of us have pointed out) and you didn't watch, problem solved. Many people, believe it or not, don't have a issue with what they said and will keep watching.
Until we have an economic collapse (which is coming, BTW). Yeah the world will keep spinning, but there will be a lot of hungry people on it. I would like to spare people of that misery if possible. (but that is a different topic)Quote:
We'll all vote in November and keep thinking each other are idiots no matter who gets elected, and the world will keep spinning.

I didn't vote for Trump, BTW.SkiMo said:

We all know that if celebrities were spouting conservative bull**** and hailing trump you would be walking around with a little chub and wouldn't be here so stop pretending to be upset and move on. This thread was fun until you showed up.
Thanks. Consider your point made.aTmAg said:I didn't vote for Trump, BTW.SkiMo said:

And I'm not upset. I didn't watch it, and I'm explaining a partial reason why to those who were wondering why the ratings were down again.
So I'm not saying celebrities can't have opinions or shouldn't express them. They have the right just like any of us. Kanye making an album and doing that church stuff on his own dime is no problem with me. Liberals can and do the same thing too. No big deal.fig96 said:
Fair response, though even if it wasn't you there would be (and often is) a massive conservative outpouring of support for any celebrity they think is on their "side". Heck, my mom called me and started talking about Kanye
They told me they will take your advice under consideration and no need to express further concern.aTmAg said:So I'm not saying celebrities can't have opinions or shouldn't express them. I am suggesting 2 things here:
To the Oscars: Unless you like decreasing ratings, encourage your celebrities to stay our of politics during the ceremony. That hurts, not helps.
To celebrities: just because you are famous doesn't mean you are smart/knowledgeable on politics. People spend their entire professional lives studying that stuff. Pretend politics is marine biology or some other field you aren't an expert on. Would you talk about that on twitter or at the Oscars? No? Then why do so with politics?

They are wrong. Clearly, they need this expressed to them over and over, as they keep spouting their idiocy.SkiMo said:They told me they will take your advice under consideration and no need to express further concern.aTmAg said:So I'm not saying celebrities can't have opinions or shouldn't express them. But most of the people in that room vote the same way, and would have gasped if someone had gotten up and said 'Someone should tell the democrats they need actual evidence next time'. I mean, we saw the reactions to Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes.TCTTS said:
Save for Phoenix's rant, which I admittedly tuned out and don't remember most of, the only other political message I heard all night was Pitt's John Bolton comment, which wasn't that controversial, considering a number of people on both sides of the isle seem agree that it's standard practice to, you know, allow witnesses at a trial. I didn't see that as "sh/tting on red America" at all. I'm with you that celebs can certainly be sanctimonious blow hards, but I honestly felt that the political messaging was incredibly tame last night.
