I would hope Ruth remembered it was the son she killed, rather than the brother.

"Son, brother, I don't ****ing care what he was to who. He was a murderous ***** who deserved what was coming to him and if that means I'm put in the ground next, then so be it."

It seems to me the big takeaway from this series is this: truly the only way out of sin is repentance. You can't work your way out of it, you can't scheme your way out of it either. But repentance can be VERY costly.

They didn't stick the landing and if they were truly going for it they should have had Ruth tell Camila right before the big moment "Wanna know how the **** I got the jump on your son to kill him so easily? Wendy f***ing Byrde called him and convinced him to show up thinking he was signing for stock options. If it wasn't for Wendy your son might still be alive and I might already be dead."

It stays true to her character to screw over Wendy and now we know they will never be safe.

Ok I really like this one. Let me add:

Show a close up of Camilla really thinking this over, gun still raised, scowl on her face, then cut to the Byrds at home noticing the broken glass, they go out and talk to Mel.

Cut to Camilla being driven somewhere.
Cut to Mel and Byrdes talking, Jonah and Charlotte are there now.
Cut to an Escalade being put in "park"
Cut to Jonah raising his shotgun.

BOOM!

Fade out.

Did Camilla kill Ruth?
Did Camilla shoot Wendy or did Jonah shoot Mel?
Was Camilla even at the Byrd's place?

This is the camp I am in as well. I like to think maybe he did shoot his mom. He was angry she killed his uncle, so he finally got his revenge. One can hope.

Saw an interview with the writer/show runner saying the gun was definitely on Mel and they didn't intend to make it vague.

Agreed. Like I said in my initial reaction post - the "bad guys" won here. And you need to decide for yourself, as a viewer, having seen it all - are you okay with it?

For me, as a viewer having seen everything, I'm okay with the Byrdes getting off scot free.

Reminds me of this famous monologue in Star Trek DS9

Just finished and my turn to make a comment or two or more…

Was part of Wendy hating Schaefer related to her hatred other Dad?

Hated Jon Boy as her dad at first, but his facial expressions conveyed his craziness that he handed down to Ben and Wendy.

I saw many Family related themes, primarily the Byrdes vs Langmores. Maybe that's why Ruthhad to die. Seems that writers have certain arcs and themes that are important to their craft but sometimes the casual viewer doesn't exactly follow??

Now, regardless of who Jonah murdered with a shotgun in front of his family, they all have to live with it and will be more screwed up than ever. Camilla is on the loose. Now the FBI is not their friend abd will throw them under the bus as the deals dissolve. You see, just as in the Sopranos, they will continue to hold on to the bitter end…

What a fun ride!

I was really bothered the small ass pool and small plot of land ruth planned to build a 6 bedroom/5 br/2kitchen lake house plus big ass deck and guest house. I guess the Langmore compound's true size was never shown, but it didn't appear big enough. And all the trees that would have to come down to get that unobstructed lake view.

before reading everyone else's posts:

I thought this was the worst season by far.

ending was completely underwhelming and annoying.

spoiler alert (the fact that Jonah all along liked his uncle, was willing to get away with his grandfather and was against his mother for two years- and yet for no reason at all on his part takes out the one fairly decent human being on the entire show to protect his mother?!?!) @#$@#$

They also seem to talk openly about crimes on the phone. For supposedly smart people, that is quite dumb. Yet in the show it never comes back to haunt them. In real life, every phone Marty was associated with would be tapped and this season would have been about 2 episodes long.

you mean a drug cartel kingpin sitting in FEDERAL PRISON telling Marty to assassinate different people and Marty agreeing to it might not be the best plan in the world?!!

This x1000000!

I asked my wife to pause it after this scene and she turns to me and says "I know what you are gonna say….something about a 'threat to our democracy'"?

Yup! And that's where Wendy Byrde draws the line!

that is the mandatory Hollywood lefist:

Wendy turns on Marty, which backfires and gets her killed. Maybe you give Jonah his crazy pants shotgun story there, but also, big sis realizes that both parents are bat**** crazy and they run. run far away and you see them later with her like bartending on a beach in florida keys while jonah trades bitcoin or something.

unbeknownst to them, grandpa, christian lady, and gambling addict are totes at nude beach just living it up. Until grandpa says something sideways to christian lady and gambling addict kills him and buries him somewhere safe, but doesn't tell anyone keeps collecting the money with the help of christian lady. They live happily ever after.

Ruth does indeed bum rush cartel lady and wins in the struggle, leaving a grieving Marty with no choice but to run the cartel all by his lonesome going forward. Ruth and Frank Jr. get married and run the casino, laundering money with the help of Marty and the FBI. Marty fully becomes the next Omar Navarro and basically Dr Strange heartless, but of the Ozark universe.

Detective guy.. I never cared about him even a little bit, so he can go have a day in the chicago pd or whatever. Maybe he finally bangs the fbi agent, whose baby doesn't die.

Claire Shaw falls in love with Marty. Nothing good happens there.

The final scene of the show should be Ben showing up on Marty's doorstep "Hey, so y'all like tried to kill me..umm..where's my sister?"

I don't know why everyone wanted Ruth to live, or to act like she was one of the "good guys".

She murdered her own uncle. She committed all sorts of crimes throughout the show that was rather unbelievable that she would get away with. Once she murdered the Cartel Boss she signed her death warrant.

The whole point of this show is that there are no winners and losers. Everyone in this crime ridden world loses....some just more slowly than everyone else.

The last scene with Jonah and the detective only illustrates that the Byrdes are now in too deep and will never escape their life of crime.
Is living your life constantly looking over your shoulder a way that any of you would like to live?

Would any of you trade Helen's money and status (even assuming she doesn't get murdered) for a life time of indentured servitude to the Cartel?

you act as if there aren't MILLIONS of hardened criminals working for different mafia/cartel crime syndicates around the world.

of COURSE there are millions of humans who willingly trade money and status for a life time of servitude to the cartel!! Much of Mexico and Central America!

Dude, the foundation, which they made for the sole purpose of helping them with all the cartel stuff, doing good things does not make them good people. They got a ton of people killed, they ruined lives, showed zero regret about it in the end, etc. They're not the good guys.
they got a ton of bad people killed. the ruined lives of bad people and showed zero regret. I guress you must have missed it but the story of the Byrde's is the story of American fiscal and foreign policy. This wasn't a simple drama set in fly over country but a celebration of America's strengths.

i am sorry you are so anti-America.

What a weird post. I don't even know how to respond to this. I'm supposed to call Wendy and co the good guys because Murica? They killed/got killed plenty of people who didn't deserve to be killed.
If you haven't figured it out, pretty much all of Duncan's posts are trolls or just bad comedy. I'm sure if you ask him he thinks he's hilarious.

This must be the first time any of you have been exposed to satire. I thought it was clever.

I totally get what you're saying. However, the last season seemed to be one in which Ruth began to really come to grips with "the Langmore curse" and she wanted out of it. She only got tied up with Darlene Snell trying to free Wyatt from her. I truly think that she was the only one in the show attempting to dig her way out of the ****, even if by screwed up means. She was really working toward a new life and redemption even as misguided as it was.

Unfortunately, the Byrdes were not working toward redemption at all. They were seeking power. We saw glimpses in the last 2 seasons of Marty wanting to work toward new life, but he had the passivity of Adam in not being able to stand up to his wife and lead, so he let her determine the parameters of what new life meant and it turns out that it's no life at all, which is evident to every single viewer but blind to the 4 of them.

Where Ruth becomes the tragic one is that the Byrdes used the Langmore curse to justify using Ruth and ultimately allowing her to be killed. Ruth was fleeing to the exit looking for redemption and she got trampled by the Byrdes looking for power.

Just finished watching seasons 1-4. Second half of season 4 was a drag. I too was disappointed in Ruth's demise.

I think it would've been a better show overall with 50% less f-bombs…it comes across as lazy writing.

I thought for a moment he was going to shoot Wendy. They should have gone with 2 shots with the black screen just to get everyone really talking. Or at least show him shooting the PI, then have one more shot with the black screen
