Wow. Didn't expect that.

Dunk needs to work on his skills. He isn't going to be able to stay alive through brute strength forever.

So what was the final tally? Dunk and Raymun lived and I assume Baratheon made it. Who was the other guy that died, they said but I didn't catch it.

Did Dunk slice the Targaryen ahole's balls off? Good luck having an heir buddy.

Well that first half was unnecessary fan fiction. Completely made up garbage. Too bad, it's a blemish on an otherwise great show.

All the more reason this should have been a 2.5 hour made for hbo movie.

I didn't love the placement of it, but I thought it was cool backstory.

I think they said at least 2 of the knights on Dunk's side died in the initial charge

That was hard to watch! Great episode, and I liked getting more backstory in the middle of it so my heart could slow down if nothing else. Strength and honor to be sure. Can't wait to find out what happens next, but I suspect there will be a time jump…

Wow. Quite surprising, which means I forgot Martin's style.

I was also wrong that Maekor and Baelor wouldn't go hard at each other. I guess one should never underestimate Targaryen ambition.

To be fair, I doubt they did any of that in the writing room without George RR Martin.

It was cool to see how Dunk ended up with Ser Arlyn, and it tied in nicely if you think of it in the perspective of where Dunk's mind went when he was knocked out

I thought for sure after the initial battle sequence and the LONG flashback (which drug on to be honest and got a bit tedious) we'd have to wait but that ending. *******!!! I'm exhausted watching it and they made it feel so f***ing real.

What a show!!!

I really liked Baelor's character and the actor that played the part. Sad it will be wasted on an early exit.

I thought the back story was good. But, this is why we needed to have a longer episode. Need more of the other fights. Needed to see the Laughing Storm in action as well as the other Targaryens and the King's guard.

Violence and gore in general never bother me but damn parts of that were tough to watch. Incredible episode again.

To be fair in the book there's not much on the other fights either. It's actually limited to what Dunk turns and sees in those small moments, which is what they did in this episode.

Adding more to them would've been fanservice, but they kept it to Dunk and it made it feel so brutal.

They actually added a LOT in his fight with Aerion.

Yeah it would have been nice to see Laughing Storm knock off someone's helmet and throw it into the crowd like he was famous for but still, this episode made you feel every stab and blow to the head. I had to walk away a few times while watching it because it felt SO F***ING REAL.

Whoever directed this...kudos!

Hmm, I seem to recall that the backstory shown was a bit of a deviation from what was stated in the novellas. Not that it was a huge deal or that egregious of a deviation, as portions of it were still consistent.

Nevertheless, the deviation to the story has me a bit concerned about the future of the show once the source material is up. I'll preface this by stating that the episode tonight did decently well on expanding on something that doesn't have much source material, and I don't have major issues with it other than it was too long, IMO. However, the showrunner decided to go for the shocking death rather than a more subtle or subdued backstory, which were the same issues we saw out of D&D when they ran out of source material. Maybe this is a one off thing, but I'm hoping showrunners in the GoT universe learn that there is more to Martin's world building and storytelling than simply "subverting expectations" or "shocking deaths".

I guess all of this would be fixed if Martin could have just finished the damn books.

Great episode, overall, however! That battle was amazing.

We're agreed on that one.

I do think he holds a special place in his heart for Dunk and Egg and could see him finally breaking through his writers block for it.

In any event, it seems he has great rapport with Ira Parker and hope that continues. We've got at least two more great seasons on deck.

I haven't read the book... but isn't the shocking death the same thing that happened in the story? So what's the issue?

Regardless this show absolutely rocks

**** made me too anxious. Very interesting back story, adds more substance over the sauce of seeing the others fight. Still, why not both?

Pretty sure you are right...unless they meant the girl in the backstory being shocking somehow?

Can someone smarter than me please analyze the early roundup? Because that look from Baelor to the Baratheon felt like crazy foreshadowing. The moment I saw it, I was like wtf.

I meant the girl, obviously. I generally consider children getting murdered in shows to be shocking. It wasn't terribly done, but again, this is the exact kind of thing D&D would do in the absence of source material. Time will tell if they can avoid the same issues seen with D&D.

I picked up what you meant, but I think if there is a "shocking death' in that episode there is only one people would think of.

I agree and tying it together with "Get up" worked. Flea Bottom is a hell hole to be sure. It adds to Dunk's true connection with the small folk.

Dunk took some damage:
  • Lance to the abdomen (non-liver side)
  • Several concussive blows to the head
  • Left eye gouged
  • Sword to the leg
His gorget saved him from a fatal sword strike.

They captured the exhaustion of a fight well. Once that adrenaline dump leaves, you slow down quick.

Would someone really be able to survive a lance to the stomach like that? Did I hear them say "pour oil or wine on it"?

They made Duncan get absolutely waylaid in this episode - far more than in the book, it made it really really intense.

In the book he gets lanced in the ribs right under the shoulder, away from vital organs. This was way more brutal.

As a book reader I was shocked at how much punishment they showed Dunk taking. The fight with Aerion in the novella was nowhere near that violent. Made me feel like I had no idea how far they'd take it.

One of my biggest gripes with movies and TV series in general is the amount of damage that is routinely delivered to the hero far beyond what would kill or incapacitate them IRL. The showrunners really ramped up Dunk's injuries for this episode. We get it, he's a tank, but he's not immortal.

I mean the guy passed out / was unconscious mid fight more than once.

Adrenaline and will go a long way

Yeah, I've seen a video of a guy getting right up and walking and responding after being run over by a car and he ended up being far from fine with a broke leg, several broken vertebrae, and internal/brain bleeding. In the books he beats Aerion easily or they don't directly fight one another the entire time?

When they removed Dunk's armor and examined the wounds didn't Raymun say the lance shaft bounced off the ribs so no organs and internal damage occurred?
