If Dunk would have just kept beating him until he screamed yield, Baelor would likely be alive. That thought does keep sticking with me.

I saw it speculated somewhere that Dunk actually dies when he initially falls to the ground and the gods of the seven brought him back because his cause was just.

Of course it ended up with the death of Baelor who would have been a great ruler of Westeros but this is why I argue that the fatal blow was after the horn sounded because it was out of the gods of seven hands at that point.

Either way just fantastic storytelling from Martin.

Me too and such irony that it was his knight's honor that swayed Baelor to take up his cause and fight with him that ultimately caused his death.

It's the ultimate no good deed goes unpunished which is something my wife and I say all the time.

Not gonna lie, I was hoping he was about to pull a Mountain vs Viper on his ass. (Or his eyes.)

Sure looked like he took the blow to the back of the head after the fight but before the horn sounded.

On a separate thought, on first viewing I found that time so stressful. We had already heard the "yield" but nobody else had. I had that Game of Thrones feeling Dunk was going to get attacked dragging him to withdraw the accusation.

I think that was also what made Baelors death hit harder because I was just starting to freaking relax after waiting for disaster the whole stressful fight scene. Classic GRRM.

This actually happened in the book.

When dunk is looking around the field observing Raymun, Baelor and Lyonel - Aerion reaches for his morningstar. Dunk kicks him then proceeds to drag him to the viewing stand

Surprised that Ira didn't add that or the director of the episode. Of course I was so drained at that point I didn't need another scare but it's certainly on point for the character of Aerion and not surprised it's in the novella.

I did LOVE the way he tossed Aerion aside like a rag doll after he withdrew his accusation.

I think how brutally Dunk beat his face in like a pulp made up for it.

I think the audience - book readers included were so emotionally beaten up (ironic) due to how much damage Dunk took. It was drastically more violent than the book.

I seriously had to stop like 3 times just to collect myself. Also to pour myself another bourbon to take the edge off because it was so exhausting to watch (even though I know there are 3 novellas that feature Dunk and Egg so I knew he wouldn't die but that didn't register at the time). Director did a fantastic job.

Maybe the 7 traded Dunk for Baelor so the Night King could be killed 100 years later.

Nerds are petty.

Apparently there's a war going on between BB fans and AKOTSK fans on IMDb right now.

Ozymandias has held a perfect 10 score for over a decade and is now sitting at 9.8 and falling due to review bombing.

This is in retaliation for BB fans trying to tank the score for AKOTSK episode 5 which apparently was getting uncomfortably close to the #1 spot.

I think it was Sean Fennessey who said it best...who the f*** cares.

I know you don't either but it's interesting that this show is getting compared to one of the greatest of all time.

Yeah, the Entertainment business, in particular films, tv shows, and music, produce the highest levels of recency bias.

I like this show, but in no way should people start comparing it to BB anytime soon.

I thought Ep 4 was great, already in contention for a Top 10-20 episode for my personal tastes. I did think Ep 5's ranking was broaching on fanboy. Could also be because the length of episodes. The argument could be made that 4+5 should be together and it's a certified all-time classic episode.

I didn't have that problem this time (and I did with the Night King battle on GoT which is what I think you're referring to) even though I watched both on the same TV.

Freaking seven-episode season, what a joke. You can barely just start truly getting into a show by the 7th episode.

Nice ending, I didn't expect any fireworks but what a sweet resolution to the story. Egg once again defies his father, Dunk gets closure with Ser Arlen, and it sets up perfectly for their next adventure.

ETA - I also like how they attack the nature versus nurture argument and that Aerion wasn't always a monster but Maekar was such a tyrannical ***** that he created him and Egg would have been that way too if he didn't leave with Dunk.

I wish it was seven-episodes but we're only getting six-episodes in Season 1.

This isn't in the book so not a spoiler, just a theory.

I think Maekar actually did tell Egg to go in private.

But in public, to their family etc.. he is putting on a facade that he ran away. The people will remember Egg as a runaway, and not that Maekar sent his youngest away to squire with the hedge knight who Baelor died for.

Just my take - I guess the only plot hole with that is that if anyone found out who Egg was on the road, they'd think Dunk kidnapped him. Makes for some interesting possibilities in later seasons.
