G, thank you for all you've done for Aggie Soccer. You were chosen to build a program from nothing over 3 decades ago and you built a successful and winning program that unfortunately fell apart at the end. Over 500 wins, 16 sweet sixteens, 7 elite eights, and a final four. You made Aggie Soccer and you built a standard which ultimately led to your demise at the end. Thank you for all you've done for the program and for everyone that passed through it.

However, 3 losing seasons in 5 years. 16 conference wins in your last 55 conference matches. Poor recruiting, your entire roster quitting and leaving you. You criticizing your own athletes publicly… It's time we move on.

We have excellent resources that are far superior to 95% of the teams in the NCAA. We have an excellent stadium, we have excellent fan support, we have an amazing pool or recruiting talent to select from, we have an amazing camp scene, we have a wealthy athletic department.

We have everything needed to succeed and some big time coaches will have to turn us down. There will be lots of buzz about this opening and there will be many coaches trying to get in the search. Hopefully due diligence will be done and we will find the right person to lead the next era of Aggie Soccer. It's an exciting time to look forward to the future and all this program can accomplish! A new era of Texas A&M Soccer is upon us!!!

Potential Replacements (Current Head Coaches)
Eric Bell - TCU
Michelle Lenard - Baylor
Colby Hale - Arkansas
Keidane McAlpine - Georgia
Randy Waldrum / Ben Waldrum - Pitt
Darren Ambrose - Vanderbilt
Steve Holman - Texas State
Brooks Monaghan - Memphis
Sian Hudson - LSU
Joe Kirt - Tennessee

I have no clue who the up and coming women's soccer coaches are. Who is the Jamie Morrison of women's soccer?

Ryan Higginbotham at TCU would be interesting candidate. He can recruit. I don't think he would break the bank and he might want to be the head guy.

yeah I'm hoping others. can provide insight on some sleepers or up and comers in the collegiate soccer world. I want a coach with a strong game strategy/system and who can navigate the portal/knows the state well.

I'd take anyone who spells out their first name

I started the other Hot Board thread and I think I've changed my philosophy some. I like Higgy and think he'd do well here, but why would A&M not go after a sitting head coach that has a proven track record of winning and top 10 finishes. I'd got after Eric Bell over Higgy for sure. He'd be my first call. We need to be recruiting the state of Texas. Michelle Lenard would be a good hire too. She has her teams play really good soccer and she's shown she can turn around a program pretty quickly at DBU and Baylor now. I'd be making a call to Randy Waldrum just to see if he has one more round of building a champion left in him. There will be lots of options and we'll have our pick of the litter.

I was going to start another thread on my thoughts on the state of the program, but I'll just post it here since we'll almost certainly be searching for a new coach sometime this week.

First, I want to thank Coach G for his service to not only this program but the community and the many charities he was involved with and how he represented the university of the past three decades. It was a very emotional final press conference after the game when he was asked about his future, but the bottom line is you have to win games at a consistent level to keep your job, and I think A&M has been more than patient with him in the last 5 years, considering some of the abysmal numbers (15 conference wins in 50 games, 4 losing SEC seasons with 3 overall losing seasons, 4 total goals in SEC play this season).

I didn't always agree with him and thought it was sad the way he ended his career with his words towards former players and sometimes insulting the fan base's intelligence on the current state of the program, however, we had some great memories and some fun times watching his teams compete at a high level.

Some highlights for me:
  • The 2006 and 2007 teams (which I argue were the best in the G era with their dominant possession style soccer) led by Ashlee Pistorious and company, who won 4 straight Big 12 titles. The 2007 team should have won the national title because we hosted the College Cup that year, had a favorable draw and then lost to Texas in a rain soaked second round disaster, which undoubtedly was the worst loss of the G era.
  • The surprising Elite 8 appearance by the 2008 squad in a rebuilding year led by freshman Beth West.
  • The brash young 2011 squad that upset UNC in Chapel Hill after getting thrashed by Duke in the previous game.
  • Obviously the magical 2014 season when those aforementioned freshmen were seniors and reached the College Cup led by Kelly Monogue and Shea Groom. Also, the Elite 8 game against Penn State at Ellis Field was a special night for those who had been following the program for many years. That group won back-to-back SEC titles as well.
  • The 2017 squad was loaded with talent, led by Haley Pounds (my all-time favorite player), Ally Watt, Jimena Lopez, and Mikaela Harvey. They were upset in the NCAA 2nd round after Pounds was injured late in the season (otherwise I really believe they would have reached the College Cup), but that was a really fun team to follow.
  • The pandemic lengthened 2020 season which ended in the Spring and won G's last conference title. Led by Barbara Olivieri, Laney Carroll, and Lauren Geczik, the team won a thrilling Sweet 16 game against Ok State in PKs, and then pushed UNC to the limit in the Elite 8.
Coach G never reached the pinnacle and only reached the College Cup once in 2014, but he was consistently in the Sweet 16/Elite 8 for many years and he ran a clean and academically excellent program. He is one of the winningest coaches in women's soccer history and will be a hall of fame coach. He was very much in the same vein as R.C. Slocum, a very good coach that in the end couldn't quite get over the hump to elite status. He brought in so many great players through the years, almost all of whom have become great people after their playing careers. I wish Coach G the best on his next chapter.

The last 5 years has been very difficult to watch and it's time for a new direction. I don't know what Trev will do now as far as next coach, but I really hope he's been doing his due diligence over the last year in preparation for this hire. I'm fine with a Morrison type hire which has worked out well in volleyball, or if he wants to take a few big swings that's fine too. But the most important thing is to get the best pure tactician and teacher of the game as possible. I think some donors will step up to get the new coach the roster needed to compete in the SEC and nationally. With the right hire there is no reason A&M can't be a top program again with our loyal fanbase and new stadium upgrades on the horizon. We will be one of the few programs fully funding every scholarship going forward, which is a big deal and should help boost recruiting if the aforementioned NIL funding is there as well. I know everyone is focused on the amazing football season right now, but this is an important hire for many of us that have invested time and money into this soccer program over the years. We're counting on you Trev.

If we are "a lock" with 5 wins, then I'm not overly worried about moving forward ASAP. In fact, making the announcement beforehand might result in some other SEC coaches having side conversations with our people at the tournament.

wow… he inherited a consistently winning and dominant Southland program and he had two good seasons with the players left over. Now with his own players the past two years Lamar has had their first back to back losing conference seasons in almost a decade. Lamar is 11-14-11 in the last two seasons. Why would we go after this guy LOL.

I appreciate this retrospective.

I was talking with some friends at the game yesterday. Actually, friends that I met through Aggie Soccer, about the memories we have at the stadium.

The Aggie Soccer Stadium has hosted some of the most fun I've had as an Aggie. It was always something I looked forward to. From the time I was a student through now, it's been a mainstay. I was looking at some pictures from previous seasons and, man, we had some fun.

A lot of that was because of the friends that I've met. But truly, Coach G set the stage for that, with an incredible run of great teams - making the soccer stadium a place to be. His program created a community. I truly appreciate what he built and the impact it's had on me as a fan. You can't take away his legacy or change my memories.

But it's undeniable that these last few seasons have been a slog. The atmosphere in the stadium and the energy around the program has changed. Last night was just... sad.

We aren't going to the NCAA's. And G didn't say that in either of the interviews that I listed to him from last week before the Kentucky match: one with Nuno and I believe the other was the weekly "official" press conference. I think that comment was just part of that poster's schtick. If not, I'd appreciate that poster letting us know where we can listen to them ourselves.

This is the main reason why I continue to mention names like Eric Bell, Ryan Higginbotham, Michelle Lenard, and Randy Waldrum. Proven coaches that have a style of soccer that they play (tactically and athletically) that have recruited and won with their own players to their system. And they've all recruited the state of Texas very well.

One thing G did that, IMO, ruined the last few years of his career at A&M is that he failed to recruit in-state. Sure, he got the few big names here and there like Michaela Harvey, Barb Olivieri, and Bella James, but he spent ALOT of resources going to Colorado and California. It's almost as if he was enamored with those players but had no plan to use them properly.

Get back to recruit primarily in Texas and supplement with the Cali, Colorado, or Canadians and you'll find yourself winning more often than not. We'll lose players to UNC, Notre Dame, and Stanford, always have. But now we're losing players to Arkansas, Miss St, Baylor (never should we ever....), Vandy, etc.

G's 2026 recruiting class includes 1 Texan and 6 Californian's…

Unfortunately signing day is in a few weeks and these girls don't know who their coach will be. With scholarship limits and the portal, it may be nearly impossible for these girls to find another home in such a short amount of time before many were expected to possibly enroll in January. I hope our athletic staff can do these girls diligence

Thanks for the great perspectives and very reasonable discussion on this thread. We owe Coach G. a lot, but it's clearly time to move on. As we've seen in several sports here and at many other schools, it's always difficult to part with a successful older coach whose recent teams have failed to meet with expectations.

Let's hope Trev has a soccer coach Ace up his sleeve. I also hope that he and Coach G. can part ways this week while our athletic schedule is relatively light and G. can be given the positive recognition he deserves to go out with class.

I wish we could have honored him yesterday Ala Gary Blair. Blair made his announcement before the season tipped off and he went out with grace and recognition. I wish this could have gone more peaceful. It would've been such a great moment to honor him at a game and invite his former players and get the whole community to celebrate him as he deserves.

Expected to move on. There's 4 months left on his contract, but we don't expect him to be renewed.
taylorswift13_
How long do you want to ignore this user?
His contract expires March 2026, we're all assuming he will either "retire" or he will be fired in the coming days. Texas A&M Soccer is at its lowest after multiple losing seasons and being irrelevant in the conference. Recruiting in state has dissipated, his behavior in press conferences has been immature, we've won less than a 3rd of our conference games the past 5 years, and after a losing season last year and 10+ girls (mainly starters) leaving the program we assumed he would be fired last year. It's clear it's time to move on, it should happen this week, should've happened already, but right now we're waiting for an announcement...

Really have to assume finances will be a heavy factor in the next hire.

G is one of the top earning coaches in the country. While I believe we should target some of the top head or associate head coaches (Higgenbothem), I don't see Trev spending that kind of $ based on the recent baseball and men's hoops hires.

Not that I agree with this, but Trev might stay internal and hire the assistant Tim who came over from Cal Baptist to an affordable contract.

Going external, many current Power 4 head coaches won't view this as attractive job (except for the camp $).

Trev likely would go the non Power 4 route like Baylor did with Michelle Leonard.

With all that being said, Manny Martins at Utah State could make a lot of sense. He's only making 100k/yr per Chris Henderson's recent post. Additionally he has done a solid job building the program. Downside he's around 50. I for one would prefer an up and comer in their late 30s who has a long career ahead of them.

frankie00
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I had the same thought when Tim was hired. Relatively young guy. Maybe hired him with the idea of being the replacement for G.

As you mentioned - "Not that I agree with this ..."

I think the Baylor coach should definitely be in the running. She is from Texas, knows Texas players and has brought in several but also from other states and countries.

But I am sure there will be many more coaches mentioned here.

Then you're talking about Michelle Lenard from Baylor. Her bio says she graduated in 2003 so that puts her early 40s.

My wife had met him in the mid 90's when she was in high school and going through college recruiting at the time.

We ended up so disappointed with this season that we had decided to cancel our season tickets if Coach G is still there next year, we just haven't been putting a quality team on the field.
