Anyone who doesn't think Marcus Wood at Dallas Baptist isn't in the running is really missing things. Proven winner, followed similar route as G did going thru Hardin-Simmons. He has exceptional relationships with his players, recruits well and gets more than the sum of the parts out of his team. The move from D3 to D1 was just a blip for him. His style translates well to all levels of players. Plugged into Texas recruiting. He has previous connections to A&M thru the camps before starting his own camps. Take a look. He's ready for the big step up.

He meets my criteria. A younger coach with ties in the Texas soccer scene are priorities

I wouldn't classify him as a young up-and-comer (mid-to-late 50's I assume), or a proven elite D1 winner (he hasn't even won the D2 chip). And recruiting in Texas at the D2 and D1 level are very different. He might be a great coach, but guess I am not sure I follow why he would be on a short list for us.

Though he's D2 at DBU I agree he's done great there and I fully expect he'll win a natty in the next few years. He recruits at a very high level for D2 and his players love him. He and Marr are fantastic people

Let's not get carried away on Marcus Wood. I think he's a great coach and he did a great job at HSU. Then he took over at DBU after Michelle Lenard left for Baylor. She left the cupboard STOCKED FULL of talent at DBU so he was able to walk into a winning team there. He's recruited very well to complete the team for his style of play also. I love the style they play BTW. Possess in the midfield and he generally has some tanks in the middle of the formation with speed attacking the wings. Fun to watch his teams at HSU and DBU play.

But if you want a Marcus Wood to make the jump to A&M, then you should be stopping at Baylor and talking to Michelle Lenard first. She's got the same thing going and made it good for Marcus when she left AAAAAAAND, she's doing it in D1 in a P4 conference right now.

That jump from D3 to D1 is hard man. There was a coach at Trinity named Lance Key. Had some great teams at Trinity, Final Four level and he might've won a D3 natty once. He quit and left to be an assistant at tu and then got a head coaching job in Louisiana somewhere. Both were disasters. I last saw him back in D3 at HSU after Marcus Wood left. I think he's out of coaching now. That road from D3 isn't easy.

Ironically, Frisco Wakeland's former head coach is at HSU now. He's always been cool with me and I've been cool with him. I think he had some personal stuff go down in Frisco but he's carried that HSU program back to the tourney a couple of times so he's doing aight there too. Maybe it's the system and support at HSU that helps coaches be successful.

Nah, nice of you to notice the timing though. I have grand plans that have been in development for like, 10 years. Or was it 25 years, I forget….. Long time listener, first time caller. Btw, the 1st month is only a buck right now.

Ha, looks like he found one of them too. His wife was good looking when I met her years ago. No idea on his/her status right now.

I heard he was a D3 player that got drafted and then ended up rookie of the year. Is that right?

There's a reply to a thread on an SEC BigSoccer.com forum that says we've contacted the UNM HC. Then today its noted that the UNM HC is taking a job with US Soccer to coach the U23's. On pages before this it mentions the former Florida State Coach having to make a decision. Just discussion and rumors but thought I'd share. https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/2025-26-hot-seat.2135207/page-19

Baylor gets a 0-4 whipping today as the #5 seed in Big 12 tournament to the #8 seed BYU. Baylor has had a really good year (their first good year under Lenard), but this one and the 0-3 loss to TCU are likely to hurt their seeding for tournament.

What about the Waldrums at Pitt? Lots of Texas ties. Randy Waldrum Technical Director (modeled after professional soccer staffing evidently) and Ben Waldrum HC.

I had to look up why I knew that name, Randy was the inaugural coach of the Houston Dash.

Not sure if Ben would be willing to move after just taking over as head coach at Pitt in May. Randy was a hell of a college coach for a long time though, won a couple titles at Notre Dame and took Pitt from awful to a solid program.

I also want someone with experience recruiting internationally. We got boat raced by Georgia and LSU and they had multiple multiple international players. With how little success we've been having, recruiting, not sure why G didn't resort to that lately. Track, tennis, basketball, have all been doing that. Not sure why soccer didn't. Could've really changed the game. We've had a handful in the past. Not sure if it was by choice or just laziness recruiting.

I don't mind some international players, but it really doesn't need to be significant with the right domestic recruiting. In the ACC final four (RPI 1, 2, 3 & 8), there are a total of 5 international players between the 4 teams and only 2 of them play heavy minutes (and 3 of the 5 are from Canada).

Notre dame and LSU both have an absolute stud from Canada on their roster and I think we did a good job of recruiting up north in the past.

we got 1 great player from Canada and one that should never have seen the field

Intl players have no business taking spots from Americans and shouldn't be allowed in the sport

What sucks is TexAgs doesn't care about soccer so we won't get any real info on the search. Gotta think we won't announce until that coach is done playing for the year so we got several more weeks to wait this out.

I mean there's also a big difference between a major sport coaching search and non revenue sports. The info simply isn't out there, we don't even have an idea of who the true candidates are right now.

My guess is we get a solid coach.

Trev's basketball hire is looking great at this time.

Yes the baseball hire is not looking good but we were put a horrible spot on that one so I'm not knocking it at this time as long as if we look the same this year, a change is made.

Hearing some '26 and '27 recruits are having their heads turned by poachers. With the roster limits, there's a lot of risk that any new coach will not honor previous commitments and instead bring in their own transfers/recruits (given the level of many of our commits and even current players, I think it may be very likely we see high turnover if we bring in an attractive, top-level head coach). And the December signing day is right around the corner for the '26s, so they are in a precarious spot.
jessexy
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Meh. I think losing any players in this day and age is overblown. The transfer portal helps fix any players lost every single year now. If "poachers" want to grab our recruits, they're recruits are bound to be poached just the same. And it's not just recruits, its current roster players as well.

Only a small fraction of the transfer portal will be good P4 level players. Important that we get a new coach in place so we can go after the top players in the portal before they go elsewhere, and keep the current players/recruits the coach wants to keep. Heard one of our current players has already entered the portal. I suppose the new coach could bring some players with them, depending on where they come from.

Hopefully they committed to a school and a program with great resources, and not a coach who was clearly on the hottest of hot seats on the last year of his contract who saw most of his team runaway from him. However, 6 of the 2026 recruits are from California, and at least 3 or 4 of the 2027's. It probably would be different if the previous staff could land people in state. G did them a disservice by not announcing his retirement earlier and delusionally thinking he would get extended after losing seasons. We've heard him in pressers, I can't imagine what he sold to those young girls and their families.

The transfer portal giveth and the transfer portal taketh. Every non revenue program should be able to flip over a roster in as quickly as year 2 and by year 3 can do something more. Look at the success of football, women's volleyball, softball. Even with complete roster turnover, we should be competitive in soccer after one transition season.

Who on our roster should we value if we want to be competitive in the SEC and not the bottom 4. Veronda, Buchanan, Crooks, Noble, Storer, Campbell, Crooks, Scranton, Diaz, and Fuller possibly. Roster turnover is coming, but an overhaul is probably required if want to be competitive. Can't blame girls for leaving, but a new coach will have two transfer windows to bring in talent. Most likely heavy on transfers after the spring window, with a huge emphasis on international talent.

And as G said himself in August, "how can you judge a team based on a bunch of girls who got 10th in the conference and left." Imagine what he'd say about the girls who got 13th in his own words, we can't judge a team comprised of people who sucked. So let's wait for the new team

Keep in mind that we can't get transfers from SEC schools in the spring portal.

Hiring a coach right now is a double-edged sword. If you want to go for a known quantity, they are more than likely headed to the NCAA Tourney and won't want to leave their current team until they are eliminated. The coaches who could start right away would be from a non-tourney team, currently out of coaching, or in the US Soccer Youth program.

Bring him in next week, let him get going right away. Think that's by far the potential option with the highest probability (liklihood, even) of a College Cup in the next 3-4 years.
