Do you think he is the wrong fit because of personality or ability?

A big center who plays good defense would be a great fit for this team. They are weak on the inside. Plus very few teams are strong at the center position in today's NBA.

My concern is that he might continue to be a whiner and not play well.

They have that already in Asik for 8mm/year rather than with Dwight for 18mm/year.

Part of the reason is the NBA is neutering the post positions and making the rules beneficial to guards and slashers because slashing is exciting.

Both. I think he is damaged goods physically and he is an immature whiner.

I agree, Soup. I'm not questioning his defensive ability. Sure, he's dropped off a bit since his glory days in Orlando on defense, but he would still clog the paint better than anyone we have right now (no disrespect to Asik who is a very good defender in my opinion).

But I don't think he has a good enough offensive game to command the offense to run through him, and I find it hard to believe that he will be OK with being "just another guy" on offense. But like you said, it's probably a risk that we have to take, because where we are right now isn't good enough

I still think the player we need is Kevin Love. I think he fits this offense really well, and I think he's a nice fit alongside Asik. But he's not a Free Agent until next season, correct?

He fits the offense, but we'd have zero rim protection. If we're going to keep Asik, we need someone with plus athleticism next to him imo.

I think you're really downplaying his offensive capabilities. He's a 20+ ppg scorer when healthy easily and can lead the league in FG%. Not only that, but he's a devastating offensive rebounder and draws fouls on 24.6% of all attempts. Even at 50% free throw percentage, that ends up being an expected value of 1 ppp, which is average nba offense.

His offensive capabilities are:
1. Be really athletic
2. Be really strong.
3. Be really tall.

He doesn't have great moves in the paint on the post or the high post and has no mid range game at all.

He has failed to really develop any moves in nearly a decade in the league and that will kill him as his back continues to give out.

He would be a big upgrade offensively over Asik, and would also upgrade our defense.

At this point, I don't think he is that much of an upgrade defensively. Definitely is offensively. Rather have 10-12 mm for a power forward, though.

Asik is a good defender, but he's not a shot blocker. Hes very ground ridden.

I would rather not sign a power forward at all if we are choosing from the existing crop. I would just keep my cap space until next offseason when I get another swipe at elite players.

You don't have to be a great shoot blocker to be a great post defender. Garnet was never a great shoot blocker

I'm just saying that there are elementa to Asiks game that are lacking that Howard doesn't lack. At full strength, Howard can close on a driving player and redirect his shot better than anybody in the NBA.

I love Asik more than most and I think he's a top 10 nba center, but thus team needs ELITE players. Not more middling players at middling salaries.

at this point I think Dirk will be on the market next offseason looking for a Duncan/Garnett type salary on a contender. And I think Dirk could have a Duncan style resurgence back to elite level in the right situation. The Rockets seem to be one of the teams with the right roster build that he could slide into - elite perimeter player/defense focused center/good passing PG. In other words, if the Mavs could build a roster from scratch around Dirk (which they have been desperately trying to do) then many of the Rockets players are a great fit. Right now I have the rockets on the list of potential dirk landings.

Its not an assumption. Its a gamble, and one based on the fact that he started to play like his old self towards the end of the season, even while playing with the worst possible scheme for him. I would rather GAMBLE on Howard returning to his old self than tie up money settling for a Josh Smith or someone like that.

This contract for Dwight everyone has to try for. The GM assumption will be that he was in a bad situation and can be the old player again. The reward is worth the risk.

The next contract might not be so easy on him.

What is there to figure out? Unless they're willing to take pay cuts, then they pretty much only have one choice: the Hawks.

I think Houston can make it work if they acquire one via sign and trade.

Those two would have Bud fired by the end of the season.

Getting someone to take the last 2y20mm of Asik is not a problem. What is a problem is you need someone to take the last 2y20mm of Jeremy Lin. The Clippers don't need Asik, so they would have to take Lin and I am not sure I see Don Sterling doing that.

Yep, Lin would be the obstacle. If you're an LA team, do you take Lin to get Asik, T-Rob, and one other plus picks, or let them go to Atlanta for nothing?

The Clippers probably have the best chance if they are willing to part with Bledsoe and Griffin though.

That's what makes it completely unrealistic. Who is Morey going to trade Lin and his annual $8.4M cap hit to? Don't forget he's still got to find a trade partner for Thomas Robinson and his $3.5M cap hit first. If he were actually able to trade Lin he should win Executive of the Year for that alone.

Let's say the Lakers or Clippers would take Anderson Varajao's last season at 9mm.

Paul:17mm
Howard: 17mm
Irving 5.9
Tristan 4.3
Waiters 3.9
Gee 3.3
Zeller 1.6

That is 53mm.

This is Daryl Morey we're talkin about here. He's offloaded MUCH worse. he can always just talk to our to trade rapees in Sacramento and Pheonix.

Per Marc Stein, Rockets may be dealing Thomas Robinson for 1st round pick

Kinda surprised Robinson hasn't worked out in the NBA. He's only played 1 season, but teams don't seem to high on him
