And Howard/Smith/Parsons/Harden/Bev would be stout. But who else can you get for the bench?

As much as I love Smith filling up the fantasy stat sheet, I hate the way he plays. Extremely low BBall IQ and a chucker to boot. He plays great help defense (evidenced by his D stats), and moves very well around the floor. But he's not exactly a great shooter, and more often than not it seems as though he is just in it to fill out the stat sheet (See Ricky Davis Triple-Double).

That said, if Morey can sign Dwight, turn Lin into Calderon, and then turn Asik (And White?) into JSmith, and have a line-up that looks like this:

Calderon/Beverly/Canaan
Harden/FA
Parsons/FA
Smith/G.Smith/T.Jones
Howard/Motie

Then it will have to be considered a very successful offseason.

I would think that Smith would command much more than the 8mm cap hold of Asik.

Don't think Atl would be at all interested in 2y20mm of Lin.

Lin makes $8.375MM/year, which was 12th in the league among PGs last year and is flat, not increasing. He's overpaid, but not by a huge amount. Stuckey, Dragic, and Devin Harris all made more.

this... is... awesome

quote:
The Rockets contingent who met with Howard included players James Harden, Chandler Parsons, coach Kevin McHale, general manager Daryl Morey, owner Les Alexander and Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler. Yao Ming talked with Howard via Skype from China, and according to the Houston Chronicle, Dikembe Mutombo recorded a video message for Howard.

Yao told KRIV-TV in Houston that when he was contacted by Rockets CEO Tad Brown and Morey to help with the team's pitch to Howard, he told them he "would love to help."

Yao, who spoke to KRIV-TV in a telephone interview from Beijing, said he spoke to Howard via Skype and told him the Rockets "have a young team, a talented team that has ability to reach championship level with you."

Yao said he will be in Houston on July 11 and hopes to meet with Howard.

After a late-night hotel dinner, Morey tweeted that it was "great" meeting with Howard and "obvious" how he and Harden could be "the next great big/wing combo."

"Dwight is focused on winning championships," Morey told KRIV-TV. "So are we."

Howard is scheduled to meet with the Atlanta Hawks and Golden State Warriors on Monday and the Dallas Mavericks and Lakers on Tuesday.

The Rockets entered their dinner with Howard with the ability to offer him a four-year, $88 million contract after agreeing in principle to trade forward Thomas Robinson to Portland for two future second-round picks and the rights to two European players, a source confirmed to ESPN. Houston also waived veterans Aaron Brooks and Carlos Delfino earlier on Sunday to clear more salary-cap space.

According to the Chronicle, Houston planned to emphasize the "marketing potential" the Rockets continue to hold in China, being Yao's former team. They also planned to appeal to the 27-year-old Howard by touting the youth and togetherness their current roster has, mixed with the appeal of a coach in McHale, who is considered one of the greatest big men ever to play the game. The Lakers, meanwhile, can outbid the Rockets and any other potential suitor by offering a five-year, $118 million contract.

Ditch Lin to Detroit and asik to Atl and There's room for smith. Atl doesn't need to take em both

IF Dwight cares about marketing like he's stated in the past, it gets NO bigger than china and what Houston can offer. If chuck Hayes can get a shoe deal over there imagine what Dwight would receive.

Lin is overpaid by a huge amount. He is turrible. Goran Dragic > Lin. Harris was in the last year of a contract he signed as 24 year old as a 15/6 PG - better than Lin has ever been.

Unless Detroit is willing to take on Lin's salary without giving back any salary (like the TRob for 4 second rounders), you need someone to take him on. Smith for Lin/Asik is easier than finding someone to pay Lin 20mm over 2 years in exchange for nothing IMO.

You really think Houston, even with China, is bigger marketing than playing for the most popular team in the world in the second biggest city in the country with the second biggest star in the world?

Goran Dragic > Lin

Dragic: 14.7 Pts, 7.4 Ast, 3 Reb, 1.6 STl, 2.75 TO, 44.3% FG

Lin: 13.4 Pts, 6 Ast, 3 Reb, 1.6 Stl, 2.9 TO, 44.1% FG

Those stats look pretty darn close. 1.3 Pts, and 1.5 Ast more for Dragic as a #1/2 Option vs Lin as a #2/3 option doesn't seem like much better.

Then add on that Dragic wanted an extra year on his contract (4/30 vs 3/25) and it seems like the value of each is pretty much a wash.

Exactly. I don't think Lin is worth $8.4MM, but his contract is not nearly as bad as some are making it out to be. Post all star break Lin was a 15-6 guy, and his deal only has 2 years left. His contract isn't even close to being one of the worst in the league.

No one has said it was one of the worst in the league.

But whoever has his rights will have to pay him 20mm over the next 2 years. That is not good, especially for him. He is not an attractive trade piece.

I do think Houston offers the best basketball fit for Dwight. We have shooters to surround him with and Harden can be the alpha wing who handles the ball in the crunch. We have a young team who is only getting better and a coach who is a former all time great big man.

That being said, I heard Dwight has reservations about the Rockets because of our fast paced, guard oriented offense. I don't think the Rockets are married to their style of play last year. They have always said they just looked at their roster and realized that's how they needed to play to win... and with Asik and our PF poo poo platter, who could blame them. The only systen the Rocketa truly shoot for I believe is one that maximizes expected ppp, ie three pointers, shots at the basket, and getting fouled -- the presence of Dwight just enhances that.

I just don't think Dwight is very smart.

A bunch of quick, great shooting guards around a post player? That would never work.

Dwight's entourage probably doesn't want to live in Houston, they want LA and Miami type places to spend his money.

I think Dwight wants to appear to handle this the "right" way. He doesn't want people to hate him.

i actually think dwight is a very bright guy when it comes to this process. He's said absolutely nothing, and everything is all rumor and conjecture from "sources". I can't stand all these writers who **** on him for this process that josh smith and other free agents also do every year.

Think he learned his lesson from his last two years in Orlando and his year in LA?

I think you're underestimating the power of the Asian market. Kobe is a dying star and the lakers are about to be the 1995-96 lakers

The Lakers may have a bad year here and there, but they are still the Lakers. They will always be good because they are THE premium destination in the NBA.

I'm not disputing that. But would he rather be an all star on a title contender or play for the post 1996 Dallas cowboys? Which is what the lakers are very quickly becoming

I don't think he stays in LA if they don't fire DAntoni.

And if he resigns, they amnesty Gasol and miss the playoffs in 2014.

I agree that the Lakers are not set up for the next 4 years as well as the Rockets, but LA> Houston as far as marketability and history.

History yes. But I seriously don't think you have a grasp on what Houston has with Asia. Asia is the biggest market in the world and the rockets are the most popular team over there.

Mr.Bond

It isn't just china, and if he's marketed in china what makes you think he won't be marketed here in the Asian communities as well as US in general. It can go world wide

what did he say in LA that was so detrimental about the Free Agent process? He's said nothing at all except that he will evaluate the process during the offseason. That's pretty much it. He's been very cordial with the lakers and appreciative of the lakers for taking him in. He said he wanted a bigger role with the lakers since d'antoni is a ****ing moron and can't coach for ****. Sure he said that **** about how his orlando finals team was crap, but in hindsight, it was crap and he was right.
