Terrible loss against a crap team.

What a wet fart of the last 5 minutes of the game. Don't get me wrong, love Wemby and he's an alien but the "shrug...Wemby?" offense we seemingly rely on when we need a bucket is absolute ass.

12-43 from 3, 19-32 from the line.

Obviously Mitch's fault making them shoot like ass from the line.

The momentum shifted when the Fox lob to Wemby got denied. He needs to learn that he can throw that thing higher.

You can't give up a 15-1 run in the fourth against a **** team (or any team).

What does our assistant who does replay review look at? They ball was off Pelicans clear as day on replay and we didnt challenge.

What a ****ing loser.

We are the worst challenging team by far.

I just looked it up. Matt Nielsen is the assistant who is responsible for replays. Mike Noyes sits next to him. Unless they agree we don't challenge. Bunch of worthless assistants.

Spurs playing 4D chess by hurting the Pelicans pick. Give the Pelicans some confidence to make a run so the Hawks don't get a top 4 pick.

Pelicans are 3rd worst now instead of worst and only 2 games back from Brooklyn for 5th.

4. San Antonio Spurs (31-15)
Last ranking: 3
In the last week: W vs UTA, L at HOU, W at UTA, L vs NO
Offensive rating: 116.5 (ninth place)
Defensive rating: 111.5 (third place)
First-quarter grade: B+
Second-quarter grade: B
The Spurs had those loud wins against Loud City, but they haven't exactly been dominant overall. They're just good, with a great defense (which I value greatly!) and with our alien overlord Victor Wembanyama, an All-Star starter. But still. Good. Not great. San Antonio is only 8-8 since its Christmas win at Oklahoma City capped an eight-game win streak.

It's games like yesterday where I have to remind myself, the Spurs shouldn't be 2nd in the West, they shouldn't be this far ahead of schedule, and even New Orleans has a team full of professional basketball players.

It was a garbage loss to a garbage team, but there are 82 games in a season and there's going to be some ugly losses.

I want to see this team finish top 3 (very realistic/possible), win a 1st round series against the 6th or 7th seed (entirely plausible), and then put up a fight against Denver/Jokic. That would be an incredible season for this particular team.

The Pelicans are a strange team. The record is horrible but they have real talent on that roster. I think every game against them has been close for the Spurs. Speaking of strange, the whole league is topsy turvy this year. Just last night the Thunder lost at home to Toronto and the Warriors blew out the Wolves in Minnesota. Crazy

OKC lost to Toronto at home two days after losing at home to Indiana, who is awful.

And they lost to a Raptors team starting Mamu at center with Scottie Barnes being held to 10 points.

Everything is wild right now and the only team playing consistently good in the West is the clippers.

The Hornets blew a 50 point 4th quarter lead over the 76ers to only win by 37.

This time of year is wacky.

I think the frustrating part is that these are winnable. We have lost 12 games where we led by 10+ points. It's awesome we get up double digits, but we have to figure out how to get a lead and keep a lead. The Rockets game was very winnable, and last night was very winnable.

I know we aren't expected to be where we are, but we have proven we can beat any team on any night. If you are blowing past expectations then expectations are going to change.

Last night seemed to be an effort/looking past this team game. We played hard and looked good for about 8-10 minutes out of 48.

While we are good and beyond expectations, we are also a team that relies primarily on under 25 guys without any meaningful experience. So because of that, we can expect to have immature mistakes like we see on most really young teams.

In games like last night, we battled from down 20 to up five, and that is when we needed Fox to step up and take control of the game. And he just didn't. Fox only took one shot in the paint all night.

Barnes last 22 games: .348/.255 25mpg, 7.1p, 2.5r, 2.1a.

We really need to find our Mario Elie and Jerome Kersey. I think Bobby Portis is one of those components, but we need the Giannis issue to be resolved first (or during.) Would love to somehow pull Royce ONeale and Nick Richard from Phoenix. Olynyk for Portis and Sochan+Biyumbo+Waters for Royce ONeale+Nick Richards+Nigel Hayes gets Phoenix under the tax and the Spurs are still about 150k under the tax. Obviously we are sending out seconds in each but we have 17 second rounders.

The only person maybe worth a 1st round is Santi Aldama, but he doesn't play great defense and he is kind of mid as a 3pt shooter - which would be a bit of an improvement - but probably not enough for me to want to trade away the pick this year. The other guys that are more of role players I would be interested in would be Toumani Camara (PPP player, can't really be traded) or Jabari Smith (Houston wouldn't do it). But both of them are also younger and don't really have the veteran presence or fire that ONeale and Portis would bring.

He's a 6'5 slasher that doesn't shoot that well (42/30 shooting splits in GLeague regular season and 42/21 in Tip-Off Tournament) so kind of duplicative of what we have.

https://www.sbnation.com/nba/1101047/nba-mock-draft-2026-one-spin-of-tankahon

New SB Nation Mock Draft has us going with an unathletic SG. But he shoots lights out.

12. San Antonio Spurs (via Hawks) - Keaton Wagler, G, Illinois
Wagler was the No. 150 recruit coming out of high school, but he's made an instant impact since he's arrived on campus at Illinois. The 6'6 freshman has moved into more of an on-ball role recently, and he's shown flashes of high-level off-the-dribble shooting and good decision-making as a passer. Wagler wasn't a highly regarded recruit because he's simply not an explosive athlete, to the point where he hasn't recorded a single dunk this year and hasn't produced many blocks or steals. That's usually an alarming sign for a 6'6 potential lottery pick, but if he keeps shooting the ball at this level, it might not matter. I worry about Wagler's ability to do the dirty work early in his career if he's not getting a lot of usage. He looks long (there's no wingspan measurement on him but I'd guess 6'10) but he lacks strength and just doesn't project as any kind of stopper or glass cleaner right now. Still, it's impressive that Wagler has finished 65 percent at the rim with 89 percent being unassisted, and his slow-motion step-back threes when he gets a big on a switch can be a thing of beauty. If the Spurs are looking for a young wing with shooting upside around Victor Wembanyama, Wagler makes sense starting around this range. This is mostly a Best Player Available pick.

I'm interested in Justin Jefferson from Iowa State though:

17. Golden State Warriors - Joshua Jefferson, F, Iowa State
Jefferson has become one of the best players in the country as a senior at Iowa State. At 6'9, 240 pounds, he's a physical forward with rare passing ability for his size. Jefferson's 28.7 percent assist rate is a massive number, and the fact that he's improved to a 36 percent three-point shooter on his first 53 attempts this year shows even more comfort playing on the perimeter offensively. He's a really good defensive rebounder who can provide some paint protection defensively, too. Jefferson potentially gives a team the benefits of a double big look without cramping their spacing if his shooting improvement holds, and the value he adds as a passer should be enough to lock him in as a first rounder.

Or Thomas Haugh that we have mentioned before;

19. Oklahoma City Thunder - Thomas Haugh, F, Florida
Haugh fits the bill of a connective wing who can finish plays inside, space the floor, and hold his own defensively. Florida's offense is 13 points per 100 possessions better when he's on the floor, and its defense is 7 points per 100 better with him on, too. I'm a bit worried about his ability to score inside the paint when he doesn't have a dunk, but he has appeal as a low-usage offensive wing who doesn't need to spend time on the ball to have an impact.

Not sure why Miami would prefer Jonathan Kuminga over NBA Champion Harrison Barnes and recent lottery pick and the next Dennis Rodman - Jeremy Sochan.

Who wants some dumb Spurs trades now that our Polish Prince is on the Market?

Denver:
Harrison Barnes + Jeremy Sochan for Cam Johnson and Zeke Nnaji.

Denver has major cap issues and Cam has been hurt. They are trying to use picks to get off Nnaji's contract and they are in cap issues this summer when they have to pay Peyton Watson. They clear up their cap, Barnes can be a rotational guy for them and Sochan can play defense some and he would probably fit well with Joker. It uglifies our cap in the future with Nnaji's 7.5M each of next two years.

Cam should be back from his bone bruise soon.

Milwaukee:

Olynyk+2 seconds for Portis -or-
Olynyk+Sochan+1 second for Portis+Taurean Prince (injured this year)

They need to tank now and Portis doesn't really have value for many teams except us.

Utah:

Sochan for Taylor Hendricks. Two guys that need a change of scenery. I really liked Hendricks at UCF. Low risk.

Indiana:

Socan for Jarace Walker. Same as Hendricks, needs a change of scenery. Low risk move.

Chicago:

Sochan+2nd for Jalen Smith. Get a D&3ish PF that is really more of a smaller center, but hitting 36% of his threes.

Miami:

Barnes+Sochan+1st for Andrew Wiggins

Phoenix.

Royce ONeale for Sochan + 2 seconds

Haven't kept up with NBA/Heat much - is Wiggins playing the 3/small ball 4 role for them effectively now?

Would be my only hangup switching Barnes and Sochan for him since that is a role they both fill. If Wiggins is only getting run at the 2/3 that leaves us a little thin at the 4 I think.

Yeah, Wiggins is really too small to effectively play against bigger/physical PFs, but he is really great as a SF. If you do that, we really need to make a second move for a PF or PFs like the Olynyk/Portis move then hope we can sign a cut player after the deadline like Khris Middleton or something for depth. But our PF rotation would be scary bad overall with mostly SFs (Wiggins, JuJu, Keldon) having to play minutes up or playing French Vanilla.

Maybe Kristaps gets moved and bought out. The Alien/Unicorn combo would be special for the 18 minutes every 5th game they could play together.

Yep, two awful draft years. Just getting one rotational player out of those four picks would have been nice.

Maybe we can get something decent for Sochan and Olynyk's expiring deals and salvage some of the value.

Getting Juju on a mega friendly deal a year later helps alot.

Yeah, it did. And if we could flip Jeremy for Jalen Smith and Olynyk for Portis, we would be in good shape. We moved Branham+Wesley for Portis. So getting two rotational players out of those 4 picks would be fine. Didnt work out the way we hoped, but oh well.

Would be great to find another guy like JuJu (or Tre Jones or Danny Green or whoever you want to mention.) Maybe DJG can be that?
