I had a StoryKeeping gig with Warren High School this morning, so I figured I'd consult Yelp to see if there were any taco joints in the area I needed to check out. There was one on Culebra called "Tacos & Burritos". Straight-forward enough, I thought.
I got 3 tacos for sampling:
Bean & cheese - refried beans were excellent. There were occasional chunks of bean, and they used monterey jack cheese. A real top-quality & unique bean & cheeser.
Chorizo & potato - both the chorizo and potato were cooked to a slight crisp - just the way I like 'em. The chorizo was a little spicy and the potatos had good flavor. The taco wasn't running over with grease either. They nailed this taco.
Carne Asada - Best for last here, the asada was finely chopped, and cooked to a slight crisp in the same manner as the chorizo and potatos - awesome. Finely diced cilantro and onion was scattered across the top.
Salsas - both green and red. The red had a slight roasted flavor, but also had a light/flavorful kick to it. The green was very tomatillo, and had the same flavorful kick. I typically like my salsas hotter, but the flavor was so spot-on I didn't care.
Tortillas - were homemade and of about average size. I drove home before I ate the tacos, so I imagine this wouldn't be the case otherwise, but I managed to tear a small hole in each of my tacos while eating. That was the only downside to the experience.
Sidenote: The manager or owner (I didn't ask) was a real champion. The lady at the front handed me my bag of tacos and I was about to walk out the door when he stopped me and asked if I had enough salsa in the bag. She'd given me 2 containers (which honestly probably wouldn't been enough), but I said "sure, why not? Give me a couple more." He said it's a pet peeve of his to not have enough salsa on his tacos. I'm glad he stopped me, 'cause the salsa was so good I probably would've been upset if I'd run out. Overall - great taco joint. If you're on Culebra between 1604 & 410 you should hit this joint up.
