There is hump in the I-35 Express as you head south near downtown, and had iced over. Oncoming traffic was unable to see the pileup, came over the hump going 70+, was unable to brake in time/turned into curling stones, and just started stacking up.
Thanks ya'll. Yeah I'm mentioning it because this sounds a lot more like that situation than the Big One from last year. The stories about people jumping out of their cars to avoid 18 wheelers (and the ones who didn't in time) were horrible. Everyone make good decisions out there on the roads especially Thursday morning!

Was it this warm and dry leading into last years event. Will this help with the ground and avoiding some ice?

No. It was warm but then it got to the 20's for a couple nights before it plunged into the single digits.

I'd still expect ice to form. It just depends really how fast it turns to snow and rate in which it comes down.

Might want to move cars away from tree limbs.

Gonna let my pool run. Do like the idea of a tarp over it to keep things clear around it in the event emergency draining becomes needed.

Who has tree limbs in their garage?

Who has tree limbs in their garage?
Those of us who are reckless Baptists with too many drivers in the house.

Yeah looking at the temp timeline, I feel like surface streets are going to be pretty good. By 3AM Thursday it is o ly showing to be 25-28. It has been way to warm recently, and will be almost 60 on Wednesday that I just don't see those icing over. By the time is hits low 20s, we should be getting enough sun through the clouds to keep them good.

Definitely feel like conditions leading into last year were much better for promoting ice and snow accumulation.

Don't believe what Twitter has to say. There is only 1 reliable source for school closings. I hope he's ready for a big day Thursday.

Latest models and actual temperatures to the north are seeming to indicate this could be a big snow dump. 5 to 6 inches

God I pray that is the case and we don't get half an inch of ice

I'd you still need some groceries, check out your local carniceria (obviously you people in Plano are SOL). The one in Arlington had full shelves of everything yesterday.

People didn't get the memo that this starts this evening. Huge wrecks in Plano. 75 N is closed at PGBT. I saw semi + 2 motorcycles + and several other vehicles. Also a 4 car pileup on 75S

So not time to over-correct/over-steer this morning? Thoughts on slamming brakes and reading long emails?

Nah, writing long emails on the toll road is the way to go.

I didn't realize it would be raining shortly. I guess I'll be covering plants in the rain today.

F'ing yay.

One of the benefits of the rain - one way to protect your plants from freezing is to water them deeply prior to the freeze. With a few hours of rain before the winter weather hits, it'll help the plants against the freeze.

Don't forget Braum's too. They are almost always overlooked and have fresh fruit, meat, and veggies in addition to dairy and dry goods.

Graham already at 35 degrees. That is one worth watching. NWS Fort Worth graphic showed they are the earliest area with an ice risk (roughly noon to 3 pm).

Reminder - just do a mental, or actual, walk thorough of your house, especially outside. I went out, glanced around the yard, and realized my pool cleaner was still in the pol. I've had the reversing mechanism freeze and bust before.

This is good, right? If it gets cold really fast we might just have snow?

So question? With outdoor spigots, I don't have the little bibs and last year I just wrapped them with towels which worked. Should I do that again if we're expecting at least some form of freezing rain

I think is still depends on the warm air aloft. It could be cold at the ground, but we might not have the deepening cold catch up at the upper levels for a few hours (I'm not an expert). It still looks to me like the cooler air, at least at the surface, is a tad ahead of schedule.

Yes, I'd wrap them up to at least keep the ice off them.

The front is well ahead of schedule. There's actually two fronts coming down. The first is in the metroplex now, that's what we're getting outside with the cooler air this morning.

The big shot of cold arrives with a second front later today.

Seeing observed temps across north Texas, we're going to get colder sooner, and the temps are lower than the models projected. Good for a quicker transition to snow once things start falling.

We're still going to get some freezing rain and ice but I think the window has shrunk for that based on observed temps.

That ice accumulation forecast put out by NWS FW this morning is brutal for Collin County.

.25" - .5" of ice is a lot.

If I am planning on running my equipment, do I still need to remove the cleaner?

Any special storage recommendations?

Your cleaner shouldn't turn on if you have anti freeze system in place. That said, I do and didn't remove mine last winter. Being submerged won't hurt it

I didn't remove mine last year, and it was ok. (We never lost power).
FTAG 2000

Pulled my cleaner - if you do you need to make sure wall water is out of the tubes, etc. Or put inside where it won't freeze.

That ice forecast for the eastern side of the Metroplex is no bueno. Makes power outages much more likely.
