Amorim has said some very positive things about him but I don't think he sees him as a central midfielder. I think he sees him as more of a 10. Which means Mainoo's career at United is uber screwed.

And to be fair, Mainoo is far from a perfect center midfielder. He has holes there and his specific holes are amplified in Amorim's system. But he's only 20 years old and the fact he can't be given games to actually develop because Amorim wants to cram a nearly 31 year old attacking midfielder into central midfield is ridiculous.

So Mainoo isn't blazingly fast. Nor is Bruno, nor is Casemiro. If you were to compare passing progression, on the ball progression, defense, and speed between our four mids:

Passing
Bruno>>Mainoo>=Casemiro>>Ugarte

Carrying
Mainoo>Casemiro>>Bruno>Ugarte

Defense
Ugarte>Casemiro>Mainoo>Bruno

Speed … man tough because we have a bunch of people who have a tough time running people down, at least at this stage of his career for Cas; I'm certain he did it all the time at RM. I'd guess:

Bruno (not as fast as he used to be, though) > Ugarte > Mainoo > Casemiro

FWIW, my impression of Baleba is: very very good speed (real fast, not just fast compared to our midfielders), very very good carrying, good defense, ok passing (he will never be Bruno, but it is decent to good, certainly better than Ugarte). If you wanted to compare him to Caicedo at Brighton, he is ahead in speed and carrying, behind in defense and passing. That's why I've said I like him a lot… but, man, if Brighton's number is 100M, he's far from a finished product. Big number. But he's a great athlete.

Anyway… I kind of think Amorim wants fast midfielders. Just an impression, hard to say since we don't have fast ones. So I'm actually not sure he will ever love Mainoo.

BTW, I love Mainoo, I'd rather sell Bruno than Mainoo, honestly, and Bruno has been our best player. But Amorim seems to dislike something because he keeps not playing him, and speed is his biggest weakness I'd say.

Garnacho likely to leave as well though my guess is that will be a deadline day deal. I haven't heard a single rumor about Malacia or Antony. Maybe Antony gets shifted to Real Sociedad like he wants for a cut rate price just to be done with it. Sounds like Lemmens is imminent which presumably will be quickly followed by Bayindir out.

If that all materializes, they will have completed most of what they wanted to do. Obvious gaps/needs still but they weren't all going to get addressed this window. I'm not sure I fully agree with what they wanted to do but they get a passing grade for actually doing much of it. The effectiveness of the plan still very, very, very TBD.

On the Antony front.

Well, I've seen enough. It's only 2 1/2 games but whatever hope I had of trusting Amorim has more or less evaporated. He's running out of excuses. He's dumped the players he didn't want. He's had his pre-season. He's got three attacking signings, two of which he had the entire pre-season with. And this team still plays like absolute dog crap more often than it doesn't.

He'll be gone by November.
