I'm confused about the fact that not streaming it will save them money. Does HBO/WB not own Westworld?

They still owe residuals to the actors (and other talent) year after year. Some streaming deals are a one-time payment up front, and others see talent getting paid for years on end, as long as the show is still up on the platform. So, in this instance, by taking the show off the platform, they won't owe the talent anything in 2023, likely saving millions. Which sucks for the talent, though, especially mid-range actors/writers who depend on residuals to get by.

Oh wow.

I guess I always assumed HBO/WB originals would stream in perpetuity but that makes sense. I guess they only do it for shows that get big numbers like a Friends, Sopranos, etc.

Yeah, I'm not quite sure what the distinguishing factor is, but it's probably something more common on the bigger shows.

So HBO is a Blockbuster Video now? 500 copies of the new movie they got a deal on, and quietly taking the old ones off the shelf.

At first I was mad, but then i realized I probably won't be watching again ever. If I want to I will find pirated episodes of season 1 since that's all that matters. The theme song alone is way better than the other seasons. I still jam that on the regular.

Preserve season 1 as an important cultural landmark and burn the rest.
