Extremely fitting for the Eagles' season to end with Hurts throwing a should-be pick in to triple coverage.

Need the 49ers to go down next. Then i won't care. Eagles, Packers, and 49ers will always be my axis of evil.

Yeah, I retract what I said. Need the niners and patriots to go down, and then I don't care who wins. Eagles, packers, niners in that order are my most loathed teams.

Mine:
Packers
Eagles
Steelers

Steelers can lose tomorrow and 49ers next week, then I won't care. Although I'd rather not have NE win, I do like Drake Maye.

It never ceases to amaze me how thin the margins are in the NFL playoffs. Every year 12-15 win teams get in games against theoretically inferior teams and at some bounce away from their season ending.

Three games today are gonna be decided by a total of about 6 plays. There is an uncomfortable amount of luck involved in winning a title.

Agreed.

One "luck" situation that I remember vividly... I guess it was almost 10 years ago (feels like yesterday) was 2016 against GB when Dallas was the #1 seed.

We sack Rogers with a vicious hit from behind. 9 out of 10 times that ball comes out... still have no idea how Rogers held onto it. Had he fumbled, we are in position to kick a game winning field goal. Instead, Rogers makes a 5% success rate pass moments later and then Mason Crosby kicks a 50+ yarder to win the game.

Un f'n believable.

EDIT: Will also add, we could have won the whole damn thing that year. Had a better shot than Romo's 2007 team because I don't think that team was built to beat Tom Brady's undefeated team. But 2016 we were healthy, and we could run all over people with Prime Zeke and an O-line loaded with 3 HOF type players. We, once again, had crap luck having to play Rogers when Rogers decided to have one of those "you can't beat me" games.

No, that was the 14-15 season at Lambeau. The game jr is talking about was the 16-17 season at Jerry World.

My gosh...that 9-7 Giants team was 19 years ago?

Also, I recall a huge DeMarco Murray fumble ruining a season.

I thought all season if you could combine the Dallas offense with the Houston defense, that would be THE team. Houston could win it all with a decent offense, but not the one that showed up tonight. Stroud was bad.

We had an average defense and really good (might have been #1 in stats) offense 2 years ago and Jordan Love and the Packers pulled our pants down at home.

I don't know what this team really needs, but it doesn't feel like we are ever going to get it.

We had the #1 offense and a top 5 defense. Seems like the defense started getting exposed toward the end of the year, though. Completely collapsed against GB.

We had a great offense and defense in 2007 and a great offense/average defense in 2014 and 2016. All three playoff runs were undone by those unlucky bounces that make single elimination format so perilous. All three teams were more than good enough to win a title.

People don't like it because it's a lot more fun channeling anger towards curses, bad ownership, etc. but the reality is a lot of it has just been bad luck. Nothing Jerry did or didn't do kept us from winning it all those three years at a minimum.

I agree with you on those past teams you listed. I'd say that 2022 and 2023 playoff exit landed solely on the players and some on the OC.

We had a front running defense under Quinn. When we got up on teams and they had to start passing the ball down the field we snowballed teams because of the pass rush and ballhawk DBs. But those defenses werent very physical and didn't tackle very well and teams that could play within the gameplan because the game was close and get the ball in space on playaction, screens, etc. game them problems.

Sorely lacked interior beef and LBers for a decade. Teams could just grind us down until we had to send everything to stop it and then rip us over the top. It's the oldest gameplan in football.

Now we got it at least on the interior DLine. We need a backer that can play behind these guys and that defense will come together as a bend but don't break defense.

I prefer that type of defense over the attack feast/famine types. The Texans last night, the 49ers.. they keep it all in front and make you make the plays to beat them. The Texans have the added benefit of Anderson/Hunter but you can see it working with the 49ers and they're decimated with injuries.

Yep. I believe it was when the Bills ran for about 750 yards on us that I realized the defense wasn't getting us anywhere.

The Patrick Crayton drop in 2007 still haunts my dreams.

Honestly that one bothers me less than him quitting on his route on third down on the final drive. It's commonly accepted he'd have scored on the drop, and he may have, but it would have been a foot race with a safety and corner chasing and Crayton wasn't a fast guy. He definitely gets us in FG range but I'm not sure he scores.

But on the second to last play of the game Romo threw a perfect ball to the back corner of the end zone and because Crayton had slowed up thinking he wasn't getting the ball he couldn't get it, but the corner was beat and that would have definitely been a game winning TD.

And honestly the Rodgers sequence in 2016 is the one that bothers me the most, for two reasons.

One it's just impossible that he didn't fumble on the sack the play before the infamous throw to set them up for the game wining FG. Every sack like that in the history of the NFL has been a strip sack fumble…except that one. I mean there's just no way you can hold on to that bad but he did. Then he completes a pass which advanced stats shows might be the most improbable completion in playoff history (like 7% or something that that).

Two, that team had a GREAT shot at winning it all. They'd have gotten Atlanta at home in the conference title game which would have been a shootout but Dak was on fire by that point in the season and had one of his best days as a pro against GB. Then theyd have gotten a NE team that was nowhere near as good as the one we'd have had to play in 2007.

2014 was probably our best overall chance since 1995 because we had already beaten Seattle in Seattle that year and they were struggling so much offensively, and that years NE team was the second worst of all their teams that appeared in the SB during that run. But people forget GB would have had the ball if we had scored with 4 minutes left and we hadn't stopped GB the whole half. I think Rodger's would have gone down and won it anyway.

I do think the amount of luck needed to win a SB or even make a conference championship is often overlooked. Yeah, you need a good roster with good players. No one is arguing that. But to actually win one you need some really nice breaks along the way much of the time. Josh Allen and the Bills are a perfect example of both getting some luck and not getting some luck. They got very unlucky in 2022 because they didn't win a coin toss. If they win a coin toss they probably win that game and go onto a super bowl. On the other hand, last year in particular, some of the breaks they got in the game against the Ravens were mindboggling with how the ball bounced and what not.
