Bain is maybe the only DE/Edge player that could truly fall anywhere near us imo, and I still highly doubt that. Arvell Reese and David Bailey will likely test off the charts so I don't see them making it past pick six in all honesty. Bain might not flash quite like Reese or Bailey, so he could looked over a bit, but he's still so good I don't' see ANY chance Washington, New Orleans, KC, Cincy and Miami ALL pass on him. The next edge player that could be available is Faulk imo, whether you like him or hate him.

Downs is the interesting one. Again, I highly doubt he's available at 12 because without a doubt one of the four to five best players in this draft, but could see him get to 10 just because he's a safety and some of those teams probably don't need a safety that high.

Realistically I think we will have our choice of CBs, maybe one DE and Sonny Styles, and personally don't think we should be spending a top 12 pick on a CB when I think our biggest need is a playmaker in the front seven. We could be a little hampered at 12 is all I am trying to say. One of my arguments for Faulk is not only that he's a high ceiling player and young, but also because you have the 20th pick as well. It allows you to take that massive swing.

I agree. Maybe the Tennessee CB at 12? He's supposed to be elite right?

Like what was said above. We need a S, CB, LB, and I'll add Rush End.

Bain is great, and I said before I'd be happy with him, but like Faulk - these are power guys. I'd almost like a 3-3-5 style defense with what we have in our DTs. With a true rush end. Cassius Howell gets me excited if we can get him later and fill a couple of those others positions.. but Howell may be a riser once he tests. I'm sure there are a few versatile pass rushers that we can move around

Yeah, I don't love CB at 12 because they are so hit and miss on impact. The way the rules are applied these days, the position is ridiculous for even the most talented. I think you get your impact guys at other positions and then have that help you compensate at CB. But they have to be aggressive in FA; too many holes for the draft to fill (that's what she said). Unfortunately, their ego on agent negotiations does not seem to allow for aggressive FA pursuit

I really would like a trade down w one of those picks so we can pick up something in the 2nd and 3rd.

I would be very reluctant to trade down from 12 just because I think there is going to be a Day 1 starter on defense there. 20 is prime for a potential trade down. That might be Ty Simpson territory. Cowboys pick before the Steelers so someone may want to jump them to get Simpson.

Yep. Agree.

Agreed, and that's not even mentioning any offensive needs like RB. That's why I trade down if I can. Right now you have 2 great picks and a bunch of hopes and prayers. If you can turn those 2 great picks into 4 or 5 good picks, then I would do it. Thinking maybe you could trade from 12 to close to 20 and pick up a 2nd rounder, and then maybe trade your 20 to the end of the first round for a 3rd and a 4th. That gets you a 2 late 1sts, a mid 2nd, and early 3rd and 4ths. You could fill a defense with that

This is definitely the "wishful thinking" approach, but the right D coordinator hire can make a huge difference regardless of players we acquire.

I cannot stress enough that every single football player under Eberflus got worse and/or had the worse year of their career under him. Truly remarkable how bad he was for this team.

Look at what Ben Johnson did for Detroit and now Chicago... we hire the right guy and we can field a competent or maybe even "pretty good" defense next year.

Fun little mock draft scenario...

Traded back to #22 with San Diego for their 2nd rounder and picks next year.

With 20 & 22 we ended up with Love (RB) and Styles (LB). With our newly acquired 2nd rounder I got Toledo Safety Mcneil-Warren.

That would be 3 guys that you would project to start for you day 1. Not bad and somewhat realistic based on pre-combine projections.

FYI: Also got Will Lee at pick 112... let's freaking go!

Quick Roster Check

DE - Need (Howell)
DT - Williams
DT - Clark
DT/SDE - Osa

LB - Need (CJ Allen)
LB - Overshown/Wilson

LB - Need/Overshown
NB/S - Need/Bland

CB - Bland
CB - Revel
S - Need (Downs)
S- Wilson

Here's how I see it.

#12 - Downs/Styles/McCoy with long shot at Bailey/Bain
#20 - Howell (if we can't trade down)/Georgia LB

And then FA to fill the remaining hole. Like Jr said above, DE is going to be hard to fill in FA, so I think we need to get one of those in the 1st. We can find Safeties/CB if FA is there ain't a stud there for us.

I think if we have to make a "we like our guys" gamble at any position it would be CB. If Revel can get a healthy offseason under his belt, I think our new coordinator has some talent to work with.

When it comes to our 1st rounders, I'd much rather focus on DE, LB, & Safety. I think there are multiple plug and play guys in this draft at those positions... we should be able to get 2 of them with our 2 picks.

This is probably cope, but if you add a player or two who can generate a pass rush, and/or add a coordinator who isn't afraid to blitz to speed up the opposing QB, the CBs won't look near as bad as they did this year.

You felt bad for them knowing they'd have to cover for 4-5 seconds every play. It impacts your mentality/aggressiveness when you know any route is on the table because the QB will have all day.

This is sort of where I was coming from as well. We've made the middle of our defense a lot better with Clark and Williams, but now we need to add a serious threat on the outside again. EZ is still developing and getting better, but it would be nice if we could find a big, SDE that also provides a pass rush threat as well. We do that and I think the LBers and CBs look a bit better than last year.

We may have a better option for that but what do we do with Osa? Is he a trade asset or count too much against th cap?
Macarthur

We have to get better at LBer and S. I think those are the two positions we are weakest.

Totally agree. Best available at DE, LB and S is pretty much what we need most of. If we came out of the first round with Sonny Styles and one of TJ Parker or Cashius Howell I would be happy.

Seems like the other option was Gannon. I'd have been fine with either, but this is definitely the more intriguing route.

This could be a sneaky good hire but the defensive personnel still needs a lot of work.

I love that we are trying something different in getting a young up and comer who has coached under some great defensive minds!

Finally not a re-tread/failed head coach. I like Schotty's approach here.

I'm not going to claim to know a lot about the guy, but our media is praising this hire. I will say I greatly appreciate that they took the time to vet several options and not simply go to Jerry's Rolodex.

give me some help at LB and DB and a little depth on the line and I think our defense can be decent. on offense shore up RB and give me some insurance at wideout and lets role
God loves you so much He'll meet you where you are. He also loves you too much to allow to stay where you are.

Not sure what to expect here. He's been an analyst and DB coach. Not exactly a long resume' for a DC.

Maybe he's the next up and coming thing. Guess we'll find out.

Ownership and players in Philly are pissed about losing him, and especially to Dallas. They all thought he was headed to Green Bay.

At the very least this guy will be coaching and developing our guys. Here's hoping he can also call a nasty defense on game day!

If an organization is in desperate "win now" mode…are you hiring a first time DC?

At least it's a departure from the "friend of Jerry's" hiring approach. Hopefully he can bring in some toughness to the culture.

Yes you are. The league is full of first time coordinators and first time head coaches that are wildly successful right away.

This is the right move and the right hire. If it doesn't work it doesn't work... There are no guarantees in life. But you'll be hard pressed to find people that are critical of this move.
