Highways are fine. Some city streets still a little icy. Some parking lots are still a hockey rink

There's currently a war here in Southlake between the granola moms pissed they had to drive on ice in a parking lot and the moms who want their kids out of the house.

East Dallas is a mix of fine and definitely not fine.

But nature is healing. People are back to driving like a-holes and running red lights.

This complaint is learned helplessness. The schools could have cleared the parking lots (or at least the carpool lanes) yesterday with a handful of dad and teenagers, but no one thinks like that anymore.

This was my thought. Just put a post on social media asking people to help clear the parking lots yesterday and you would have had a couple of hundred people out there with shovels.

Anyways, I just dropped my daughter off at a Southlake school, and the complaints aren't unwanted. Getting out of my neighborhood was a major pain in the ass because the entrance to the neighborhood is on a hill with ice. Every neighborhood will be different though. Some are probably fine. The major roads were pretty close to perfect. The school parking lots, though, are awful. The school district should have definitely taken a look at the parking lots and don't something before hand.

The parents complaining about "dangerous ice" in my hood are the same ones who freaked out about kids not maintaining safe social distance and posted pictures taken through their front windows of people walking down the street too close to each other 5 years ago.

Y'all saying the school districts should've done something beforehand have WAY too much faith and confidence in leadership/administration for these districts

Walked out to my truck having slid 5-6ft down the driveway from where I parked it last night. Driving Prosper in Celina roads were as slick as they've been the whole storm, antilocks kicked in several times crawling to a stop.

I'm scared to bring it up. Any chance DISD is cancelled tomorrow as well?

Definitely worse than people were expecting. Even our own office did a "open" message late yesterday and then this AM followed up with a "uh, nevermind, parking lot is very dangerous so, while open, use discretion and only come in if necessary"

Needed 4x4 to get out of the neighborhood. Preston was fine as was 380 and DNT. Had to go back into 4x4 to make it through 380/DNT intersection though

Dropped off at Walnut Grove and Durham. Walnut grove was Icey but we got through it. Durham drop off line was perfect but the teacher lot was icey.

At the end of the day I felt it was safe but everyone holds the right to say nah. I'm staying home. The opportunity should be given to each. Glad they opened.

I'd also add what were they supposed to do? Salt the entire parking lot? DFW can barely put stuff down on its highways. Zero chance school districts could cover the parking lots.

Yeah, many of these burb districts have in the ballpark of 80 campuses. We also have a society that loves to sue. And while some sit in neighborhoods where parents are engaged and some may volunteer to help clear, much less so for many of those campuses. This ice **** is a beatdown to clear with a shovel; no way are these folks clearing parking lots like it's an Amish barn-raising. Maybe some of the walks to the entrance, but not massive clearing

This morning (7am) was might first time driving since last Friday afternoon. I was surprised how much ice/slush was still on major roads. My truck slid once on Spring Creek heading west to my office in Legacy West. I won't question any of my team members who chose to work from home also today.

And what kid/teen would realistically give up a day off from school, so they can do unpaid work at school to go back to school?

Forecasted low of 27, gonna be icy as hell tomorrow morning, dont see how they have an on time start, if at all.

Picked my daughter up from practice at the HS yesterday and saw the same thing; roads and drop-off lanes are fine but the student/teacher parkings lots were still iced over. Guess those Raptors I see in the parking lot are going to finally get some use this morning.

It's supposed to be above freezing until about 10pm tonight and it's breezier today. I'm trying to speak the melting into existence. I can't have kids home any longer.

Yeah, I went out to the store this morning expecting to have an easy time and slid in spots where I was fine yesterday. Need a lot of melting and evaporation today or there is no shot we have school tomorrow.

I think we will be fine' supposed to get to upper 50s today, sun is out and already seeing significant melting this morning in spots which had not budged much until now.

I'm pissed because I have a 4yr old and 18month old and pay as much as my mortgage on daycare that has been closed all week. My wife and I are full time and these closures are causing a ton of stress on us professionally and financially. Seeing McDonalds, Target, Starbucks, and virtually every other place of business open while schools remain closed is frustrating (to say the least).

So you have to pay the daycare even if they're closed? I guess if I were them, I'd be in no rush to open.

Correct. They get an auto draft on the first of every month for the same amount regardless of how many days they actually provide childcare.

Temps and clear skies are going to let everything melt today. So that is good. But need more evaporation to happen because anything sitting on the roads overnight is going to freeze again.

Wind seems to have picked up some so that should help evaporation.

Thats some bs. Should be a prorated auto return.

Cost of daycare is insane and one of my biggest concerns when it comes to having a kid in the future.

Thats pretty standard across all daycares.

I'm in the exact same boat.

I was outside literally in shorts yesterday when I received the message that our preschool was closing another day. It's BS.

Curious if they pay their workers when they're closed.

Yeah, luckily ours is back open today, but I agree 100% with this sentiment.

In my experience, most daycares / preschools defer to the local school district when it comes to weather related closures.
