The ice itself doesn't even concern me - most of us can handle things from home. It's local power outages with unknown timetables that make me anxious. 2 dogs, a cat and an 8 month old makes for a stressful "will it or won't it stay on?" situation.

Counting on my proximity to a major hospital (we literally back up to it) to keep our power on or on the high priority to restore.

We did not lose power at all on the first Wintergeddon.

Fingers crossed.

Doesn't matter if a tree or a limb falls on power lines. Hospitals have generators and have enough fuel to run for days.

It does if they are buried. But also it's just that if they have to cut power intentionally to conserve they don't do it on sections that include hospitals or fire stations, etc. And work to restore them first.

And if your power goes out you can just walk to the hospital and use their heat & lobby electricity to watch iPad movies!

Evening model runs coming in. Gonna suck.

Showing rain transitioning to ice with .25-..5 of ice accumulation. Then 4-9 inches of sleet. Then 3-5 inches of snow on the back end on Sunday.

Think 2013 cobblestone iced roads storm, but more accumulation of ice.

Insane QPF on GFS still. Just nuts.

If you're in a county bordering the four county DFW area, you're getting a foot of snow ball ammo on Saturday. Lock it and send the ice south, Mother Nature.

Poop slap if you're wrong.

Depending on which hospital, that facility could have dual substation feeds supporting it. That does not mean that you are on that same feed, but if you back up to the facility it is possible.

Just to be clear, the models I'm hearing/seeing say Friday (all day) is a cold rain for DFW and North Texas. North of that and to the west will start seeing freezing precip late Friday (mid afternoon on).

At that point, the models split. So called European model says DFW/North Texas freezing rain picking up early Sat. and getting heavier during the day. Sunday transitions to snow. Mid to late Sunday, precip ends.

The "Nam" model (whatever that means) has more sleet than freezing rain on Sat. in DFW.

I don't think sleet on Saturday is going to produce much ice. Freezing rain might.

From Steve McCauley, cautioning totals aren't accurate more than 24 hours in advance:

The storm system off the coast of California is digging to the south and will eventually eject to the NE bringing a wintry mix of precipitation to north Texas this weekend.

In the Metroplex, precipitation will start off as a cold rain on Friday changing to freezing rain and sleet Friday night, and transitioning to mostly sleet on Saturday and then to a mix of snow and sleet late Saturday and Saturday night before ending as all snow Sunday morning as the system exits to the east.

Even though the math shows the system weakening as it moves in - the last thing we want is for the storm to maintain its current strength since this would make conditions worse than Feb 2021 - the upper-level storm will have more than enough energy to make a mess of the roads this weekend, and the bitterly cold temperatures are not going to help with wind chills falling below zero Sunday night into Monday morning threatening to freeze exposed pipes and water lines.

As most visitors to this page know, the Stat Method is unable to predict ice and snow accumulations more than 24 hour in advance, and since precipitation in most of the Metroplex is expected to remain liquid through the daylight hours on Friday, we are still more than 24 hours away from the ice / snow in the immediate DFW area.

Even though precise ice/snow totals cannot CURRENTLY be reliably predicted, the math still shows the heaviest snow (whatever that ends up being) to fall across the north and northwest sections of north Texas (and much worse in Oklahoma), the heaviest sleet will be here in the central portions of north Texas, and the heaviest ice will be in the southern and eastern sections of north Texas and down into central Texas. Ultimately, however, most locations will end up seeing all 3 precipitation types; it's just some locations will see more of one than the other two.

The critical question to answer is exactly where will the freezing rain-sleet-snow lines be drawn Friday through Sunday morning. Keep in mind that the lines will be constantly changing over this period as bitterly cold air continues to drain in from the north causing the thickness of the arctic air mass to increase. This, in turn, changes the precipitation type observed at the ground.

Yeah. Just the fact that I never lost power in 2021 bodes well I think.

Anyway I was fortunate then. I know a lot of people that suffered through without power for days or even a week or more and I know a few that got flooded due to broken water lines. We actually took in 2 friends of my son who had no power and nowhere to go for 3 days.

Hope everyone is prepped and stays safe and warm.

Think it definitely points to the fact that you probably won't get hit in a load shedding emergency. Your greatest risk would be a localized problem.

lol.

Waiting on tonight's models but its good graphic from the NWS. Bad news, quarter inch of ice. Good news, think we will transition quickly from ice to sleet tomorrow night.

This would be over a foot combined ice, sleet, and snow for DFW.

Yep. The low for Monday is trending towards zero. Was already looking at single digits but coming in colder with each model run.

Doesn't look like anyone will be going anywhere Monday.

I fully expect our clinic to ask a skeleton crew to hole up in our onsite hotel starting tomorrow night so they can have staff to see patients on Monday (even though there will be no patients lol)

Looks like several models are trending back towards this being a bigger event

My hope at this point is that we get enough above freezing on Saturday to clear the roads. Then just have snow to deal with Sunday.

Our house in Fort Worth is on the market and we've since moved to magnolia. Still deciding whether to drive up to Fort Worth tonight to winterize the house/outdoor kitchen/pool and then head back to magnolia tomorrow or bring the family for the weekend tomorrow evening to stay in Fort Worth throughout the duration (to potentially see snow, but also be there to make sure the house is good).

Let me ask a question here for the gang....

What do we think this will do to Air Travel? Have some friends that are leaving to go to a Conference, thinking they will be able to get out on Sunday. But I keep telling them to leave earlier instead of waiting cause you may not be leaving at all until Tuesday (and then what is the point of going?)

Once we go below freezing Friday night or early Saturday we will stay there until late Monday. Might even be Tuesday the way it's trending. Plus we are getting rounds of precip on Saturday, roads are going to be a no go.

I'd expect both DFW and Love to shut down Saturday through Monday.

They don't shut down airports in other parts of the county because of snow/ice/freezing rain. DFW has de-icing stations and storage for events like this. I know this because I built a few of them. DFW WILL have delays, but as far as a shutdown the airlines won't want to lose that profit for 3 days.

Can't speak to Love Field though.

Ryan Hall's take if anyone is interested. The GFS model is the most extreme but I think the Euro model has been more accurate (that's his opinion at least):

With the amount of freezing rain possible, I am gonna be prepared to run my house off my truck generator just in case.

My dad worked for Oncor until 2020 (he retired the Friday before the world shut down for covid).

They build/design to 32 degrees and half inch of ice. They also use to do spans of 400 feet between poles, but towards the end of his career, they brought it down to 250ft to help a bit more in case of ice.

Take that for what it's worth.

Your dad is solely responsible for the failure of the power grid in Feb 2021 because of his retirement?

Driving the cobblestone highway of DFW > Frisco was one of the suckiest drives of all time.

Thanks. I had it in my mind that they shut them down for the big winter storms in the past.

De-icing is great but if no one can get to the airports...

Winter Storm Warning just issued. Relevant piece:

Quote:

WHAT...Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Ice accumulations
between one quarter of an inch and one half of an inch. Isolated
amounts up to three quarters of an inch can`t be ruled out. In
addition, sleet and snow accumulations between 1 and 3 inches with
amounts near or above 5 inches near the Red River are also
possible.

* WHERE...North Texas

* WHEN...From 6 PM Friday to noon CST Sunday.

* IMPACTS...The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may
down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages.
Significant ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may
cause widespread and long-lasting power outages. Expect power
outages and tree damage due to the ice. Travel could be impossible.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Have an emergency kit ready in case of power outages. Check on
vulnerable friends and family.

Consider delaying all travel. If travel is absolutely necessary,
drive with extreme caution. Take a winter storm kit along with you,
including such items as tire chains, booster cables, flashlight,
shovel, blankets and extra clothing. Also take water, a first aid
kit, and anything else that would help you survive in case you
become stranded.
