wrap a towel around the spigot, cover in plastic sack, then cover with the hose bib cover. Should be good.

Freeze line is way ahead of schedule. Like 6-8 hours. Metro should be below freezing by 10 tonight.

Would this have any effect on the other layers of the atmosphere cooling down earlier to start sleeting, even snowing earlier than forecast? Hoping we can shorten the "freezing rain" window more than where it's at right now.

Potentially, for example, in Oklahoma City, the warm layer aloft is already gone. Everything that falls up there now is going to be snow. We need that cold air from surface on up to get below freezing to keep us out of the ice and freezing rain.

So I bought two new freeze misers. One is dripping from the brass tip just fine. The other is dripping from the body/surrounding opening at the bottom.

Is this a faulty miser? If so, I guess I'll just put a faucet cover on it and take the faulty miser off.

i use to duck tape layers of newspaper, towel and then a small garbage bag.

Wrap a small towel around the gap and duct tape it. They don't really provide much insulation from the cold anyway, but they do keep moisture and wind off the bib.

Hard to say, it's not cold enough yet. Throw it in the freezer for 20 min or so to make sure it's cold enough to open. Then go put it on the bib and turn it on and see if the water flows. Then take it inside and let it warm up, repeat and it should be warm and the water should not flow. Thats how I test mine each year.

I would love for someone to answer. One of mine did that. I noticed today. I don't want to risk a bigger issue so i removed and put on a standard faucet cover.

Here's what happened after I had it in the freezer and then back on. It comes rushing out, but not from the brass tip.... is this one screwed?

This won't help for this event, but there are longer faucet covers available on Amazon which I have used for this purpose: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DDPQGJ8C?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

It should firm up and just drip from brass tip once your temp gets below 36.

I took it off for now and put a faucet cover on. We're about to go to our local Mexican joint for an early dinner since we probably won't get out for a few days.

I brought it inside to warm up. I'll try it again when we get home. But it's 35 degrees here. The other one is dripping just fine.

Sometimes it will run for several minutes if its not below freezing already. I bet its fine.

You have to be sure of where it is dripping from. Mine was not from the metal end so I knew something was up.

Do we need to start an official hose bib thread?

I need more fear, shortage reports and baseless conjecture.

On WUgrnd, the radar over Midland/BigSpr is showing the green movement (rain) turning into pink (I think freezing rain/sleet) and blue (snow) as soon as crosses into Texas from NM or goes north of about I-20-ish. Midland is at 31 currently. I'm wondering if there is no more warm layer above the southern panhandle and north central Texas.

I don't think Oklahoma, particularly northern OK, is going to get snow measured in feet. Maybe a few inches, but it is clear there now.

That's a frost free hose bib...the valve is some 6"+ behind the brick. Turn it closed and forget about it.

Of course I get home and the tarp I had covering my firewood (bungied down) somehow came off so now 80% of it is wet

Seeing sleet reports out around Bridgeport to Decatur. Would be greet to skip the freezing rain.

Temps are lower sooner than forecast. Plenty of moisture. We are going to get swamped with sleet tonight into tomorrow.

I'm not sure what that means.

Just turned mine on and it flowed for ~30 seconds and then stopped. All good.

Just left the Dallas Costco. Figured there was a 50/50 chance it would either be total chaos, or really slow because everyone had already done their panic buying - luckily it was the latter (would not have stopped otherwise). No lines in either the store or at the gas pumps.

75 was a breeze heading south to Mockingbird. Waiting with a Bulleit & soda for some friends at Lakewood Landing.

Good to know. This is what my parents have, but I put covers over them not knowing that.

Never owned a newer home so this is newfangled tech for me.

Anyone in the Weatherford/Stephenville or surrounding areas? Weather radar seems to show limited to no precip (of any kind). Just wanted to confirm. There seems to be some stuff down around San Angelo that may/not head this way. But given this, will the rain, etc. stop for DFW, at least temporarily?

Had a happy hour then early dinner with the family, restaurants were full and everyone was in good spirits. Tip well if you can tonight!

Question: is this an extraordinary event? This won't be 2021. 2021 was 5 or 6 days in a row under freezing temperatures with temps being in the single digits. Lots of lost power for days that caused the issues. This will be temps from 10 to low 20's for 2 days with the sun shining on Monday. Having lived in DFW for a long time, cold temps / ice hit at some point most Februarys that affects road travel for a couple days. Maybe it hit in late January instead of February right now, so a little earlier. But haven't we dealt with this before most winters in Feb. over the last 20+ years?
