Our house in Fort Worth is on the market and we've since moved to magnolia. Still deciding whether to drive up to Fort Worth tonight to winterize the house/outdoor kitchen/pool and then head back to magnolia tomorrow or bring the family for the weekend tomorrow evening to stay in Fort Worth throughout the duration (to potentially see snow, but also be there to make sure the house is good).

Let me know if you need help, I'm a pool builder in Fort Worth.

Can you install chlorine generators? Mine needs to be replaced.

Yes, we can.

Feel free to email me at that address above and we can discuss it offline.

Not to get ahead of ourselves, but next weekend also looks like it could be crazy

Yes and given forecast temps for next week, could still have sleet accumulations just sitting on yards and stuff as a base for any weather next weekend.

Well luckily I'm heading to the motherland Thursday and will be heading back Monday, so hoping that it's all while we're gone.

It's gonna be funny if we catch a sleet ice storm this weekend, everyone is grumpy about no snow, then we get dumped on with the white stuff next week when everyone is expecting a nothingburger.

Quick temp check here for DFW as we head into noon. Three degrees colder than forecast.

I went ahead and pulled all my plugs and shut the pool down. I've had to go out and do that at 11 PM when it's 20 degrees with a 20 mph wind and I'm not ever doing that again.

My rule of thumb is if projected freezing is less than 48 hours, I let it run. Otherwise, I drain it.

I forget how long it takes to start building ice in the pool / skimmers...that is the one thing i hate....dealing w/ sheets and layers of ice....

Sorry if this was covered, but for those of you that drained your pool equipment, did you also lower the water level in your pool? I'm seeing some guidance to lower below the skimmer, but unsure if that is necessary for just several days

You can put a weighted empty milk jug in your skimmer to allow the ice to crush inwards instead of outwards.

The skimmers are the main casualties of a freeze as it's a smaller area usually made of plastic so the ice expanding will crack it and cause a leak.

I would think the main body of the pool is not as much risk as it's a lot more surface area for the ice to not freeze uniform ally and it can expand up as well, plus it's concrete.

Aren't you supposed to put a plastic bottle in the skimmer or something? Not an expert because I have always let mine run.

i believe the thought is you don't want those skimmer doors to freeze close as it will start to suck air versus water…which obviously would damage the equipment

I would think a brick on the skimmer door to hold it open, and the bottle with antifreeze or pool noodle in the skimmer to help with breaking the surface tension and help absorb some of the pressure if some ice forms.
The Collective

If you shut down and drained your equipment,

Remove basket
Cut a pool noodle to about a foot and place vertically inside skimmer
Leave an inch or two of water in a plastic water bottle, screw cap on loosely, and float inside skimmer
Put cover back on skimmer

Both will buffer the expansion if/when the water freezes inside the skimmer.

I fill up an empty water bottle halfway with antifreeze and put 1 in each skimmer, and toss two in the main pool and one in the spa. Never had the ice freeze completely due to that.

For those of you who have to park outside, do you do anything special?

I've always just let it roll, but with the amount of icing we may see, wondering if throwing a tarp over the windshield and doors would even make a difference

Our neighborhood is at the bottom of a hill, so I want my 4wd truck as available as possible

My truck won't fit in the garage with the grill guard, so it stays out.

I will probably just remote start mine a few times and open/close the doors to see if it will help prevent it from freezing my doors shut.

I may have to go check on a few things during the weekend for work, so I left my bed open so the ice/snow can help weigh down the rear.

This is smart. If you don't have antifreeze for the main section of your pool - another idea is to throw a basketball (or some type of ball) in there. A bit deflated would probably be good.

Lift your front and rear wipers off the glass. Go ahead and pull the ice scraper out of the glovebox so you can use it. Other than that you should be fine.

If you haven't go ahead and put the zero degree wiper fluid in the reservoir.

Fold your windshield wipers out so off the glass, and don't use an ice scraper on non-glass surfaces.

Think I am Shutting the pool down. Don't know how things will go if equipment is iced over on exterior.

Do I need to pull the plug on my rain barrel, or just try to ride this storm out? The empty milk jug is a good idea, will check that out. I've done some winterization but not positive this thing will survive.

Freeze line is way ahead of schedule. Like 6-8 hours. Metro should be below freezing by 10 tonight.

shut mine down about an hour ago and drained everything. No worries if we lose power. I threw a couple of tennis balls in each skimmer. That should handle any expansion of ice.

Would this have any effect on the other layers of the atmosphere cooling down earlier to start sleeting, even snowing earlier than forecast? Hoping we can shorten the "freezing rain" window more than where it's at right now.
