We are struggling with below average EPL teams so I don't think it's the competition level in a lot of the cases

Low level EPL teams drop back in a low block. And they are good at it.

I really want Nelson to start over Willian and play Laca behind Auba up top.
Good win. An injection of youth today provided energy, creativity and fluidity missing all season. Looking ahead Arteta will go with experience in the north London derby. Not optimistic if no changes are made.
I think a big factor today was movement. Pass and move was the name of the game. We've all complained on how static we usually. Everytime the midfield had the ball, Pepe/Nketiah/Nelson were moving for the ball.
I didn't even know we played today. I hate 2020. I hate how lousy this team has started the premier league season. But, I am glad we have the Europa League to occasionally lift our spirits.

From what I saw of the highlights, we seemed to be playing faster.

ESPN report I saw this morning reported that there was the dreaded "players only meeting" earlier this week and they seem to be attributing at least part of the RV showing to that. A few (very) hopeful quotes from Arteta about the upcoming derby. I am not as confident.
When you watch the PL vs EL matches it is like we are 2 different teams. In the EL matches we play much faster. Its not quite press & counter but it is damned close. The question is why are we playing different styles? In the EL matches we are playing a lot of young guys. Are they playing as instructed or playing to impress? If that style is working in EL why haven't we tried in PL? Are the older players unwilling/able?
Ive mentioned on other boards (and maybe here) that i think oir current personnel would better fit a 4-4-2/4-2-2-2 pressing counter-attack offense. It would help us generate more chances and provide more excitement without having a #10 on the field. The current PL strategy of possession attack isnt working against teams that park the bus so a quick strike offense (think Leipzig) would help us generate chances before they can park.

If you are gonna go through a manager change I think you need someone that is capable of changing tactics based on personnel and opponent. While Arteta has done some of that with our 3-4-3 lineup, he has stuck with his preferred possession attack which doesnt fit our current personnel well enough.
Martinelli starting for the U-23s today. Could use him back in a big way

Looking at the table, it's way too soon for that talk still. Get back to me in mid February.
We're 7 points and an 8 goal differential from Europa League. We're 7 points and a 6 goal differential from relegation.
This season can go all sorts of directions at this point.
It is helpful for us that (1) there is a lot of parity and (2) the three teams in the relegation zone are really, really bad and Fulham isn't any better.
