I think one of the many reasons I've liked this season so much is because it's left with us with a very Empire Strikes Back vibe. They split up the crew, El went off to do her training a la Luke, there was a massive twist/reveal, and now I can only assume that El is about to go and try and save her friends in "Cloud City" (even though, yes, the big reveal in that movie came after Luke left to go save his friends).

Also, these final two episodes/four+ hours just became my most anticipated content this summer, only behind Top Gun: Maverick. It's going to be such an event.

I think that there is no portal to Russia through a gate - Hopper was there all the time and then flown back to Russia with the Russians... right?

It might not be time travel, but that the upside down was created at that moment El banished 001. It's basically a carbon copy, or a snapshot. They didn't travel back to 1983, time is still moving forward in the upside down, it's just not getting updated.

Another theory could be that opening the first gate "froze" the upside down, but that seems to make less sense to me than the creation.

Yes, as they are riding bikes to the trailer park, one of the bat things on a lamp post spots them, then it jumps to vecna tilting his head. He then geolocates Nance and puts her in a trance.

Expect El banished 001 in 1979 not 1983.

ah, so something caused the upside down to freeze.

I wonder how the upside worked before getting stuck? Like, if you picked something up in the real world, did it seem to float around in the upside down? when nancy wrote in her journal, did words just magically appear in the upside down?

My understanding is the upside down was created the night El made contact with the Demigorgon and it entered our world. (Same night she escaped and Will disappeared). It was an exact replica, but the atmosphere of the upside down has been breaking it down ever since.

Or it could be what the past is, like in the Langoliers.

Not necessarily. I've mentioned this a couple of times, but when you see 001 banished, it seems like he's going somewhere else. Notice that he's going into a red world, whereas the upside down is dark and grey. The only red is when then they're in Vecna's mind or around the mind flayer, which leads me to believe they're different places.

Also notice that the gates all open to their doppelgangers in the upside down. The gate El banished 001 through obviously didn't open to a reflection of Hawkins Labs.

I kind of like the Langoliers angle. IIRC, the Duffer brothers pitched the series as if Spielberg directed a movie from a Stephen King novel.

When El sent 001 into the upside down it seemed very primordial..... Volcanic, lightning, brimstone, etc. An evil alternative universe stuck in the time of early earth. It didn't look like the upside down we've known as a copy of our 1980s world. Maybe it changed 001 to Vecna and gave him additional powers as a new being in the upside down. He is then able to shape it, create creatures as pets (his obsession with spiders as a kid).

Then when El opened the gate or when will is taken it does another snapshot in time and alters itself. This whole time Vecna is experimenting with creatures, reaching between dimensions, etc. Maybe he sees will as a broken kid like himself and takes him first then realizes how these psychic connections open gates between.

I don't knowml, just thoughts on how it all works. Show is great.

Eddie reminds wife and I of a mix of Eddie Van Halen and Paulie Shore based on his look and mannerisms.

Did the brothers just blow off the story line with that other super-kid? The one who makes people see illusions? Her super powers were totally different than moving stuff with your brain, which is what everybody else was doing. I don't remember her being in the group sessions or anything. Are they hoping we all just forget that part?

Right now, I am giving them the benefit of the doubt that it will get tied up next season or in the next few episodes this season. We will see. That whole episode is still a complete oddity.

Whoa. I just realized I forgot all about her. She came and went so fast, it does seem like they gave up on her.

Love how they wove Running Up That Hill into the trailer. You know they absolutely did it after the fact when they made the song a massive hit 30 years after its release. Also looked like Eddie is going to shred on a guitar in the upside down.

Currently avoiding all trailers for both of the upcoming Stranger Things and BCS parts.

Doing the same for the final trailer for Nope, and hoping to avoid all Halloween Ends trailers entirely. (Hoping I can manage to avoid them in the theaters as well.)

I'm gonna try to do this more often as I think trailers are giving away more and more as of late. I like that all the Obi-Wan trailers were mostly from the first episode.

Not watching part 2 trailer, but Eddie and his guitar were in part 1 trailer. I'm very curious to see the context for that. I'm also worried about his future....

Yeah, I kept expecting Eddie to play the guitar in the upside down this last episode. I'm assuming it has something to do with the way the Walkman works, but maybe amplified?
