Eleven is pretty believable, if you ask me. Has daddy issues, is emotionally unstable, lies to her boyfriend and gets her panties twisted bc he doesn't write "I love you."

Steve may have the best character arc in television outside of Walter White.

Nancy: Oh Steve, please be careful. We're in the upside down, so many dangers.......

Steve: Nancy.........<shoulders 16 penny nail studded baseball bat>...........I am the danger

Steve is who we all imagine ourselves to be:

Good looking doofuses who can slay the ladies, confront evil, and wield weapons.

I agree with the other posts about the season starting slow but picking up in a fantastic way to close out part 1. I think episode 4, and especially the last 20 minutes, is some of the best TV I've watched in quite a while. I don't know exactly what it is, but I was just so drawn in and invested throughout the entire episode, culminating in the awesomeness of the last 20 minutes.

No matter what happens in the end, this is easily one of my favorites of all time. I didn't live through the 80's (born in '88) but it's been a ton of fun getting to experience the decade concurrently with fantastic writing and acting.

Lastly - as has been noted, the fantastic arcs of some of the characters has been so fun to watch. The obvious ones for me are Nancy and Steve, however even Hopper had some extremely important character development this season. This was a different "Hopper" than we typically see given the storyline, but I though the vulnerability and self realization he showed within the prison were fantastic and made his character even more believable and endearing. Last but not least, Murray is awesome and hilarious. I've loved what he has brought to the past two seasons, especially season 4.

I have a feeling Murray was one of those "throwaway" characters, but he was so good they brought him back for more. He's definitely grown on me since introduced.

Sort of what happened with Steve. They had nothing for him in Season 2 so they put him together with Dustin, and the rest is history.

I never thought I needed a team-up of J'quan Hgar and Sheriff Hopper, but I was wrong.

My wife and I thought there were way too many missed opportunities for some GoT references at the Russian prison.

Steve was supposed to be Billy's character. But they liked him so much his character was completely changed and he became a regular cast member.

Which opened up Billy to be a single season character.

But Billy was in two seasons.

Ok so trying spoiler tags for a theory but last time I did on a phone, it didn't work right so might edit and post again tomorrow

ok so I had the same thought that Vecna is the mind flayer. In his monologue he talks about how the more people he kills, the stronger he gets. In season 3, we see bodies become possessed and then explode and congregate to the mind flayer, making him stronger and bigger with each death. I think the mind flayer is the personification of Vecna after he went to the upside down and how he gains strength on earth. Hawkins was just ground 0 for all of that but he has ports and gates in other areas clearly. Also I don't think the tentacles are El. Think about season 3 when they would burn the tentacles and Will would be hurt and burned. Never happened to El. I would think if El was connected to that; she would have been affected.

Good point abbot the tentacles. I'm still pretty sure vecna is the mind flayer.

Someone else mentioned the earthquakes in the upside down. I'm wondering if that is because of what eleven is doing at NINA or something that vecna is doing.

I really don't think Eleven created the upside down. If she did, they should probably kill her because that is some god-awful power to have.
My take is that the upside-down was always there & Eleven's super powers tore open the boundary between worlds.

001 was sucked into that world & became Vecma. This begs the question: Why did 001 get turned into an upside-down being immediately upon entry & the Hawkins kids can enter with no ill effects?
Perhaps punching through the wall causes a change, whereas entering an already open portal causes no change?

Side note: I'm surprised no one has mentioned the obvious call out to Poltergeist scene when they throw the rope into the closet & it passes through the other dimension.

Well, for one he has powers, though that didn't mean anything for eleven when she was stuck there for a bit.

But more importantly, he may not have even been in the upside down. Notice all if the red light and the lightning he's struck by? Those don't really exist in the upside down aside from the storm things we see where the mind flayer and vecna are. It also lacking form, as there's no ground or anything, and all other gates we've seen open up into their reflection in the upside down. That one opens up into basically sky. It's also more like the space he goes through while he's reading thoughts and looking for victims.

Also, notice that eleven basically ripped apart his body in our world as she was opening the gate. I think that had at least some effect.

What if Eleven being away from Hawkins is causing the Upside Down to collapse and is causing the earthquakes?

What if Argyle brings some sweet weed to the Upside Down and convinces Vecna to just mellow out a little?

Didn't they say that Vecna is like a general of the Mind Flayer? I still think he's just a lieutenant and not the big boss.

The thing about this show (and most shows) is when the characters make an assumption it almost always turns out correct. Since season 1 I have recollections of a character saying "guys, what if xxx?" and then that thing is what happens.

I really love Dustin taking over as the main problem solver.

That's Dustin's theory, but it doesn't mean it's right. He questions how vecna and the mind flayer, which is conspicuously absent so far, are related, but he's just speculating. I don't see the mind flayer sending vecna in to open all of these gates and not sticking around. 001 also seemed like the type that wasn't going to be controlled by anyone or anything. He was a loner, not a subordinate. Dustin also doesn't know his origin and that he hasn't been around in this form that long.

Steve also mentioned how Dustin was getting a big head about being right, and being wrong about that may be a plot device that brings him down a notch while serving as a red herring for us.

Absolutely. The kid is nails. He transitioned from "kid" to "awkward teen" perfectly. The actor is going to have a great career.

Finally finished the first seven episodes. So good. Just like every other season.

Episode 7 was really strong, didn't see the twists coming. But my favorite part of the season so far is the saving of Max. Such excellent, emotional, dramatic television. I love this show!

Finished #7 last night. Love this stuff. A few musings:

During underwater scenes, I always hold my breath to see how long the characters can really stay under water. Yup, Steve was under deep for over 3 minutes. The others simply dived down in 30 feet of lit up lake water. Maybe the door gave off a glow so they could see? I know…picky! It's a show!

Is Eddie the new Billy? Both are compelling actors who seem to steal every scene. An Eddie vs. Billy scenario would have been cool.

Duffer Bros. are huge Tolkien fans. Love the parallel between the Upside Down World and Mordor as well as the Ring Wraiths and creatures in the USDW.

And, how did Vecna's dad get from the Ozarks to Indiana and still have that $hi/ eating grin on his face?
(Have to see Ozark to get this…)

It's a theory that ended up being pretty much spot on.

I just didn't want to watch if he was spoiling the rest of season 4 (or even season 5).

Was that his own theory? Or was he talking about something he heard somewhere else?

Yeah, I figured that from your last post.

I wonder where he got that theory from. If he accidentally spouted something from one of the writers or something he read online.
Brian Earl Spilner
How long do you want to ignore this user?

They were talking about theories they'd heard or seen online. They always say they know nothing about the future of the show, so that definitely wasn't from the Duffers.
