My one concern is that I just don't see where you take these characters next season in terms of their emotional stakes/character arcs. Because just about everyone feels like they evolved emotionally to the point of reaching the end of their respective character arcs, in pretty significant fashion. I totally get that there's plenty of *plot* left, but their character journeys feel complete. More than anything, that's why the final episode felt like a series finale and not a season finale, save for those last few minutes. I just really hope it they have somewhere to take take these characters mentally and not just physically.

They probably won't wait a year. I think they've aged a lot more between 3-4 than they will between 4-5.

I take this back. With the production delay for covid, there will probably be a longer time between filmings between 4-5 than 3-4. I bet there's a time jump, but I don't see how you do that with that ending. It may also be moot since they're in their late teens, and you do a lot of growing in your early and mid-teens. Who knows. Looking forward to it either way.

Why would there be a longer gap between filming 4-5 with NO Covid delay this time? My guess is they're filming by '23 for a '24 release. Hopefully.

As for where the story will pick up, yeah, I don't see there being too long of a gap, considering how this season ended. But at the same time, I think they have to give Max time to heal (she's not going to be in a hospital bed/on crutches all next season), and then for purely aesthetic/"movie star" reasons, I doubt Millie Bobbie Brown wants to rock a buzz cut again for the final season, so they'll likely need to allow time for her hair to have grown out (in-show), if even just a little.

I 100% agree with everything this person said. Show was wrapped up perfectly imo and my gosh that would have been phenomenal to see at an IMAX. I already want to go back and watch it again.

Okay... I guess this thread is half pre-watch discussion and half post watch. Being only 2 long episodes, how long are we spoiler tagging discussion?

I thought this season was very good, though still certain things bothered me here and there. Even though I really like the show and the season, I will not be a hypocrite and will call out the power-up moments in this show like I do in any other medium. Very weak explanation for the power-ups, in my opinion. If our hero is damn near beat, and you want them to rally to win a fight, I just wish the writers did a better job with earning it. I get how they are trying to explain the power up moment, but it just didn't do it for me.

One of my other critiques was the resurrection trope with Max. She's in a coma, so they don't get a complete awful fail from me, but I think they copped out with not letting her die. When she had her death moment, my jaw was literally hanging open. I couldn't believe they went there, and was about to come on this forum to give my kudos to the writers for really upping the stakes.

I will also second all the scenes with Will struggling with seemingly being in love with Mike. We get it... how many times do I need to see him cry about it? However, something in me thought about what if he's actually in love with Eleven, and the writers totally tricked us. Every scene I have seen where they give those clues, I think you can also twist it that way. That wouldn't be championing the gay representation in Hollywood, so I doubt that's the case, but would be a great little twist.

I would say just about everything else about the season is a positive. I still believe the best characters in this show are Steve and Robin. Great relationship between the two, and just really like anytime we get back to their points of view. I definitely didn't expect us to get the ending we did, so appreciated that subversion of expectations.

Edit: Also, that remix of Separate Ways is still freaking epic. And Master of Puppets is always epic. That was truly metal.

I think Max is brain dead as evidenced by the attempts by El to reach her.

My oldest thinks Vecna is inside Max now and is waiting for his moment. Either that he will take over Will again, which I think based on the end of the last episode seems to be a given.

I don't expect Will to make it through Season 5. I am not sure what they are trying to do with Will, but he has become the least likeable character now through Season 5. I would rather Will or Jonathon die over anyone including Eddie or even Argyle.

Is it weird that I want the two Russians back for the final season? Mainly Dmitri because he's great with Hopper but Yuri was fun too. I'm pretty sure I'd miss Dmitri a lot more than Will or Jonathan if they went missing from the last season. I'd totally watch a spin-off with those characters.

I didn't realize until I after I watched part 2 that the actor playing Dmitri played Jaqen H'ghar in GOT. I thought he looked familiar, so I looked him up.

Will needs to go, and Jonathan was wasted along w/ Mike this season. Jonathan was one of my fav characters in season 1.

Both Dimitri and Yuri are presumably in America now, and hopefully along for the ride in Hawkins next season. Would absolutely love to see both of them again, though I'll take just Dimitri if I had to choose.

Will and Mike both need to go, though, and while funny-ish at times, Surfer Boy Pizza dude has worn out his welcome as well. I don't mind Jonathan, if only because I feel like if Will has to die his mom still needs one of her boys to live. I also really wish Eddie had stuck around, as I liked him more and more throughout the season, especially the worse Jason got, who I'm so glad got vaporized or whatever.

Another A+ for music this season.

I read somewhere that Kate Bush is making $1 million/week off her song being played because she owns all rights to it. Imagine a song doing better 40 years after it was recorded than initially.

How did Vecna reopen the gates at the end? Seems like it closed back up when Max was brought back to life. So did Max die again? Was she brain dead and just technically alive when El revived her? Did Vecna win a case in monsters appeal court to get the gate reopened?

I might be getting my dates mixed up, but there was a 2.5 year gap between the start of filming for 3 and 4. We're already coming up on 2 years since season 4 started. If they don't start in 8 months it'll be longer. I'm sure they're already planning and writing and everything, but it's still going to be a big gap.

I'm in this camp. They emphasized the last part of this season about what Vecna can and cannot do to people. This fits the "miracle" narrative.

Could also be that Vecna could be hiding inside her body but her consciousness is in the upside down somewhere where he took them, which means anyone could be saved/coke back in the last season.

Incredible end to the season.

Like others when Max rose up and her limbs snapped my jaw was on the floor. Could not believe it.

Nobody has brought up yet that El brought Max back to life. Holy crap! Wondering what other powers she can develop.

It was brought up more than once about El "learning to fly". That's gotta happen in the final season.

Dustin's scene with Eddie's dying body was tough. Hearing his little whimpering was absolutely heartbreaking.

Eddie playing Metallica in the upside is straight from Metalocalypse. BRUTAL

When can this thread just be a spoiler included thread?

This is silly that people come to a fan thread and haven't watched it yet.. the thread will be much better when we can actually talk about the things that happened and ask real questions

I initially thought max was brain dead, but she can't be because she wasn't on a ventilator. That means she is breathing on her own. So unless it's a really bad writing oversight, she's still there somewhere.

Eddie became one of my favorite characters. That young Robert Downing Jr. clone nailed that character all season. I got chills with that MOP scene and how he and Dustin celebrated how 'metal' it was afterwards. Really liked watching their friendship develop and got a little misty eyed when Eddie passed. Guy was always a misfit who no one respected, then he gets portrayed as an evil satanic killer before and after his death, when he was just a poor kid who never fit in and an actual hero…just made that scene extra tough.

I am a fan of 80's music and have an extensive playlist that I am pretty proud of and somehow had never heard this song anywhere until this season came out. As soon as I heard it, it had me wondering why it wasn't a bigger song that you occasionally hear in Walgreens or Kroger nowadays. Maybe now we will. Really dig the song.

I had the same issue with the ending.
so, the whole town gets wrecked by these giant tears in the otherworldly fabric, forming a big glowing red X, but everyone just buys this earthquake story? Then, with no explanation, they start smoking and glowing red again. The good guys are just going out on a kum bae ya picnic when the baddy, who they know isn't dead, reactivates this giant portal that awful stuff is about to pour out of.

Should have extended the season an episode or two and ended this one when they walked out and saw vecna gone. Then finished the series in another episode or two.

Put me in the camp that Will is hot for 11, not Mike. All his freakouts come when Mike is getting all lovey dovey on 11. He just looks gay with that 8 is enough hair cut.

First time doing the spoiler thing, so don't look if I screw it up.

Can you imagine how dark this show would be if the creators weren't absolute masters of inserting comedic relief and 80's campy nostalgia at the exact appropriate moments? Its like they have the perfect balance going on. Too much or too little could really take away from this show.

As much as I loved the character and the MOP scene, was anyone else annoyed at just how completely pointless Eddie's death was? What exactly was his end goal? Steve et al were already inside the house, and Eddie knew that. What was the point of his sacrifice other than to provide the audience with an emotional gut punch?

Also, Eddie's death essentially guarantees that Steve does not die next season, as Eddie's death was basically a stand in for Steve as the older brother figure to Dustin. You can't play that cord twice in the same show.

Just watched the finale last night. What an episode!

Eddie rocking on the car in the upside down is hands down my favorite moment of the series. Such a simultaneously fun and bad ass scene. I can't remember if it was the final episode or the second to last, but Eleven taking down the helicopter was such a visually cool scene as well.

This episode outside the last few scenes felt like it could have been a perfect series finale. I could have had it end with the group reuniting with some tie offs and been perfectly satisfied with the show. Will be interesting to see where they go next season.

Max is almost assuredly not brain dead, both from a story and more practical aspect. Max's struggles this season were an allegory for depression and suicide. Dear Billy was her being talked off the ledge by friends and music. The finale was her "attempting suicide" after believing that she had control of things and inevitably "relapsing", creating the message that depression is not something you can completely control or hide from, and is a constant struggle. While it would've made sense thematically to kill her off outright, the fact that the Duffer Bros did not do that demonstrates that they are trying to convey a sense of hope for those suffering from depression. That there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Having her remain brain dead would be much too bleak than simply killing her off immediately.

Also, no way they are going to pay an actress for a whole 'nother season for her to remain brain dead. The Duffer Bros also stated that season 4 was the Empire strikes back season, which was obvious from the way it ended on a bitter note, but one could also take that to mean that Max is getting Han Solo'd, stuck in a carbonite coma.
