I get the impression El banished One pretty well before the events of Season 1. How quickly does she go from barely being able to do anything to walking through dimensions to spy on commies?

See and I thought the night she banished him was the night she escaped. They were planning on escaping that night and he showed her the sewer tunnel. I just assumed that it was that night she escaped.

Hmm. Didn't we see the escape in season 1, which coincided with her opening the gate for the demigorgan?

Yes but we don't know the timeline on that. She said she created the gate by touching the demigorgan but I think it's pretty clear the gate happened by banishing Vecna. I guess is possible that she explored the upside down and touched the demigorgan that night. I'm not sure I think she stayed in the lab for an extended period of time after that night and then planned her own escape at a later date. I think that's likely all one continual timeline.

Again, several years apart. Admittedly it is a little confusing though.

Yeah, that's what I said

Well, I implied

1979: El banishes Vecna and [possibly] creates the upside down?

Unknown year in between: El touches the Demogorgon and opens up the gate for the first time.

1983: Demogorgon breaches the gate and attacks the lab. El escapes.

I think that's all we know for now?

Did not mean to hit the sad face.

Ahh I didn't realize she banished him in 1979. Missed that I guess.

How about the comment from Vecna to Nancy in the swimming pool that he killed Barb -"when I kill someone I never forget" - that's a big clue I think

Didn't the characters say the things in the upside down are a collective? What one knows, they all know? So any old demigorgan is and isn't vecna, simultaneously?

The Diary's last entry was specifically Nov 6, 1983 - I just finished the show last night and that date stuck out to me.

Nov 6 is the day of Will's disappearance in Episode 1, right?

he didnt say he killed her, that was just his way of reminding nancy about her unintentionally getting barb killed by making her wait outside with the demogorgan, while she was busy getting it on with steve.

I know this season is not technically over but it was my favorite so far. Outstanding.

I think the production did a very good job in downplaying certain characters who's shelf lifes have essentially expired and playing up those characters who have evolved to the ones the fans really want to see lead this thing through to a great ending. Very on point with the audience.

I thought the first 2 episodes really dragged, especially Jonathan crying about Nancy to Generic Stoner Character.

3-7 were outstanding, although my wife and I both find Mike's character to be kind of the worst. The sleuthing team that doesn't include him and Will trying desperately to not use his deepening voice is a lot more fun and democratic.

I really don't think Eleven created the upside down. If she did, they should probably kill her because that is some god-awful power to have.

If Murray taking down Yuri in the plane doesn't win some sort of award, there is no justice in Hollywood.

I would totally take a spinoff series that is Hopper, Murray, Dustin, and Steve doing pretty much whatever.

Agreed on the show really picking up in episode 3 though.

The entire show is built around 80's typecasts/stereotypes. It's kind of a staple of the show.

Agreed across the board. Jonathan outlived his utility and let's be real, him with Nancy just doesn't fly anymore. Will and Mike were endearing - kids. They don't really make the grade as teens. These things happen. Relegating all three to the California nothing burger side plot was a great idea. I will say though, the shootout in the house in CA was badass. Top notch filming.

Hopper, Murray, Dustin, and Steve spinoff, yeah I'd watch that with a few appearances by Robin and Joyce. Not sorry, I really like the Robin character and I've had crush on Winona since high school.

I went to high school on the west coast between 1988 and 1992. 18.5% of the male students looked like Eddie Munson. It's science.

My take is that the upside-down was always there & Eleven's super powers tore open the boundary between worlds.

001 was sucked into that world & became Vecma. This begs the question: Why did 001 get turned into an upside-down being immediately upon entry & the Hawkins kids can enter with no ill effects?
Perhaps punching through the wall causes a change, whereas entering an already open portal causes no change?

Side note: I'm surprised no one has mentioned the obvious call out to Poltergeist scene when they throw the rope into the closet & it passes through the other dimension.

The real tragedy of this season is Steve not getting to wear the Scoops Ahoy costume while fighting Vecna's flying snake bats.

Best Character List

1. Steve - the most believable character, a good-looking doofus who occasionally does something right.
2. Dustin - He could kill the rest of the characters and I would still love him for the song to end Season 3
3. Murray - his performance this year has moved him past Hopper, but I'm sure Hopper will regain a top spot as we progress.
4. Hopper - no explanation needed.
5. Max - Was lukewarm on her before this year, but her portrayal of post-trauma emotions was really spot on for me. You don't want to talk about it, you don't want other people to help you do fun things and get back to normal, you just want everyone to leave you the eff alone until you sort it all out yourself.
