What little I've seen refers to it as a "small plane" so I'm not even sure what type of craft this was. Doesn't even seem to reach the threshold of private jet, much less regional passenger jet (at least not based on limited reports). Will have to wait and see.
EDIT: to add that everything I've seen involving an AA jet hedges pretty strongly. It's terrible regardless but I HOPE it was a very small craft with few passengers.

American regional jet flying from Wichita, AA5342, and a police helicopter. Praying the news isn't as bad as it could be.

That's scary. I flew internationally into that airport last year and then down to Houston. I fly a lot and I never really think about the dangers. They're still way less than cars, but it can be scary when they happen.

Not in aviation so just pure speculation but I would guess it's an error on helicopter. Potentially atc error

That video sure makes it look like HC error. Appears hc crossed into landing path. How did they not see the jet

The airplane pilot should have seen the helicopter and avoided it. Visual s. Seems like someone's TCAS was turned off or altimeter way off.
Edit: I'm not sure from the video who ran into who. I initially thought the plane ran into the helo. Perhaps it's the other way around.

Unless the crj was lined up on the wrong ILS AND ignored ATC, there's almost no way this is their fault. Heli or atc screwed this up.

Oh man terrible. If true that it's an AA plane is this the first major commercial incident with fatalities since the UAL regional plane went down in NY over a decade ago?

Flight tracker shows its path directly in line with runway, which is just across the Potomac. Clearly coming in for landing....so altitude makes sense.

Agreed if that was the correct runway for the CRJ to approach.
Altitude of the Heli in that location does not make sense either way.
