We've launched them surprisingly long distances previously to support units in Syria.

No fresh attacks since 23:30 pm per friend in Bahrain. So that's great news. It's ~ 730a there

Several us bases have been hit now. One of my concerns I mentioned a few days ago. We don't have the anti missile/drone systems to adequately defend the bases.

Very impressive. I kind of wonder if we are seeing the last big military engagement with so many planes. It requires those vulnerable land bases or aircraft carriers that require a tremendous amount of supplies. Not to mention proximity to theatre. Instead you can bring a smaller ship, launch 1000s of drones and 180 and full speed away from retaliation. None of those drones ever have to comeback and land.

That's Ukrainians intercepting Russian drones, right?

I meant to follow up from an earlier post on the Iranian ballistic missile threat.

What we learned from the war in June is that Iran has essentially two basic categories of ballistic missiles. They have the medium range that can hit Israel, and they have the short range built for what they are using them for now which is to attack US bases in the region that are closer. (They have multiple subtypes of each but not getting into that for this post)

The missiles used to launch against Israel are slower to set up and use large transporter launchers which are much easier to spot and strike before launch. Estimates are Israel was able to take out about 2/3 to 80% of their launchers in June and they are not easy to construct. Likely Iran was not back up to full capacity on the launchers before this war started. This may be why we haven't seen quite so many launches against Israel itself like we did last time. Israel has also been in the air over the known missile bases knocking down launchers before they're able to fire anything.

The short range ballistic missile program in Iran is built for high mobility. A lot of these ballistics are not being launched from static bases but road capable trucks which could blend in with the civilian transport trucks. They are much more difficult to spot before launch and their set up time is much shorter. Estimates are they have a few thousand of these. Most are not all that accurate but some do possess more advanced guidance and have shown the capability of precision strikes, at least to a certain degree.

In the June war with israel, Iran was launching ballistics 2 to 3 times per day a few hours apart. We have seen a more irregular cadence this time.

They are also launching drones. These drone launchers are also truck mobile which make them difficult to destroy before launch as they can set up relatively quickly.

The risk assessed before the war absolutely included how many missiles we were going to have to expend to defend against saturation type attacks on bases and cities. We largely evacuated these bases before the war.

Iran is banking on a numbers game win, that they can launch more things to the point that we and Israel run low on interceptors. This was obviously part of our war planning too. Getting these things on the ground before they launch is a big deal.

Do we think that Iran has any capabilities for the new offensive? It seems they are attacking neighbors so that they can have a missile/drone or two hit as "success"

They do not have the funds or abilities to defend against and assault all their neighbors plus Israel/US

I would think that with the first strike alone, there are heavy losses and their radar/defense has been weakened to being nearly inoperable. What possible strategy is there in bombarding those who are close enough to be struck occasionally?

I don't know how much of the information about the ROEs is true, but if we're actually going our own way and starting to protect our services by fighting on the same level as our foes, I'm all for it.
If anyone can expand on this, I truly appreciate it.
