I like the "oh my gosh, I'm so surprised! I'm just randomly dressed to the nines on the beach in front of this flower setup that looks like a beach wedding altar". Gotta get it captured for the 'gram story

There's a very simple explanation for why the Cowboys put off signings like this - the Jones Family Office (Blue Star Innovation Partners) has liquidity issues.

They are either complete morons (which probably figures in a little) or they are managing this thing to defer/avoid cash outlays as long as possible. Remember that any time you want to defer a cap hit, you do it using upfront money (signing/roster bonuses). Also keep in mind the Cowboys rank around middle of the pack (14th I think) in dead cap money in the NFL.

I'm assuming a contract for Parsons would probably bring with it a $40+ million signing bonus. There's probably a lot of reasons they are hoping to defer that bill, regardless of the cap penalty the team pays.

My guess is that the organization has been HEAVILY leveraged to finance all of the other Jones family ventures. Family offices across the US are all dealing with issues of PE lockups and being paper rich/cash poor. I doubt the Jones Family Office is an exception here.

Don't forget that all guaranteed money has to be deposited into an escrow account at the time the contract is signed. Dak got $230M guaranteed, CeeDee $100M guaranteed. I don't care who you are, coming up with $330M in cash is going to hurt. Adding another $100M to that…on top of how much other guaranteed money you've given out is going to make someone think twice.

Sure, Jerry has a huge net worth, but almost all of that is in a single asset that is very illiquid. Might be interesting to see that statement of cash flows!

yeah I doubt Jerry actually stroked a check and put that in an escrow account.

People with money like him use leveraged finance to the nth degree.

He likely has whatever private bank he uses deposit that "money" in an escrow account on their own books which is fully guaranteed and collateralized by all of his existing assets held and managed by said bank. Probably at a 0% rate.

Here's a Wildcard pick at #12 that we really haven't talked about... Jalon Walker.

That could be a very interesting/unexpected pick and I wouldn't hate it. I haven't studied him much, and him wearing #11 helps, but he definitely looks like Micah Parsons running around out there.

I think it's a def possibility because Jeanty is almost 100% gone and I will be very surprised if TMac is there either. Wouldn't hate the pick. That pass rush would be something.

I was looking at your profile to prove that you were too old for her but I discovered a fun fact.

You, Me, & Mac must be TexAg brothers. We all joined in 2002 on consecutive days... July 20, 21, 22. I wonder if there was a promotion or something happening back then because that's an odd coincidence!

I'm listening to the DLSS podcast from earlier today and they are doing a mock... this was the exact scenario for them. TMac and Jeanty both gone and Walker was the blinking light / best player on the board so they took him.

I think you'd love to move back in this draft and pick up an additional Day 2 pick, but I'm just not sure if there are that many players that other teams are willing to trade up for. If we are stuck at 12 this could be a really fun (and hopefully end up being an amazing) pick.

I don't know her lol.

I actually joined in 1999 but had to recreate my account in 2002. If I remember correctly, you could not use a generic email address from services like hotmail, yahoo, excite (lol), etc when Texags first started. I think I switched jobs around then and had to create another account. I wasn't on premium back then either so maybe that had something to do with it.

Good to know though!

Think I have a new favorite pet cat. Lan Larrison, HB, UC Davis. I heard him mention a couple of times on the draft show. It's UC Davis, so yeah lesser competition, and it's a highlight reel, but holy crap he is a fun fun watch. Would not mind if the Cowboys used a 7th on him or made him a priority UDFA.

No way to say this without sounding a bit racist... but I love white boys that ball out at skill positions. I was really high on Lad McConkey last year and so far he's just as big of a stud in the NFL as he was in college.

Gotta be careful with smaller schools, but Lan is definitely a baller. He plays the game like he LOVES it. We need 2 RBs in this draft... I would love it if Lan was a late round/UDFA priority. He looks like a guy that will make the gameday roster, give you some reps at RB, and will give you 110% on special teams.

The Cowboys need 2 RBs and this draft would be the perfect draft to get two studs if they didnt whiff so badly on Mazi. There are several speed backs and power backs in this class. Get Judkins and Martinez or Johnson (love him) but unlikely they can do this due to other needs. So that brings up my next solution, draft a speed back like Judkins then get that Lan guy. Still wouldnt mind them getting a power back late in the draft.

Yeah, the terrifying part about what you are suggesting is that the "best" big body DT to fix our run issues (Grant) is another Michigan guy. He also played next to one of the highest rated DTs to come out in a while (Graham).

Maybe his is a STUD and maybe it was him that helped Graham be so good and not the other way around... but still... I'm terrified of that pick in the 2nd.

The Taco & Mazi PTSD is real!

$37 Million in cap space right now... that could get even larger if we went ahead and signed Micah... and the Cowboys have ZERO plans to spend any of it.

It's been said on this thread already but the simplest explanation for why they do the things they do is that they are cash poor. I imagine interest rates these last few years have not been their friend in terms of managing their debt and real estate. It's funny seeing them act more like the Oakland A's than the New York Yankees. Not Ha Ha funny though.

I have heard from multiple people, one of which is associated with another NFL franchise tell me they are cash poor. Lawyers, settlements, other business deals, etc have eaten up a lot of cash. People on here and elsewhere do not want to believe it but the way they do business and the rumors paint a different picture.

It would certainly make sense. We've been saying for years that their is no salary cap on coaches and there is no reason for "the most valuable sports franchise" not to consistently have some of the best coaches across the board. Never happens.

So, do y'all get the sense that we are zeroing in on WR in the 1st round? Definitely feels that way. I don't think we'll see anything done with the O-line until day 3... "we like our guys" (and I'm fine with that... not enough picks to get everything). I still like the idea of trading back a few spots, but I don't expect anybody to overpay for this years crop of players.

One example/idea that I sorta like is moving back to Seattle at 18. The compensation would be we swap our 3rd rounder for their #50 pick in the 2nd (move down 6 spots in the 1st & move up 26 spots in the 2nd). It's an underpay for sure, and maybe Seattle would also throw in a 4th or 5th rounder to get a little closer.

I think Dallas is focused on getting Golden at WR and trying to trade back to 18. Not sure they will be able to find a trade partner though.

It's sounding like, for now at least, not a lot of teams are looking to trade up. I would love to see them trade down and get an extra Day 2 pick and still get Golden or Egbuka.

I think McMillan will be gone by 12. Maybe keep an eye on OL there: Membou, Banks, Booker.

Someone asked about running backs at the pre-draft presser yesterday. Jerry starts to go on about DeMarco and Zeke and how they had great lines blocking for them. Which makes you think OL may be in play at 12.

Defensively Mykel Williams or our old buddy Walter Nolen. Word from the media guys that cover the Cowboys is that they really like Nolen.

I will give Jerry and the Cowboys credit this year for being cryptic and hiding their intentions. Unlike last year where you had Jerry professing his love for Jonathan Brooks to anyone that would listen.

Also in the presser, Jerry mentioned they were working on two "substantial " trades. We'll see if that comes to fruition or if it was just the Johnnie Walker Blue talking.

Golden is fine... I think I'd prefer Egbuka, but I understand why Dallas would want Golden. As said, you'd like to move back and still make it happen, but we'll have to see how the picks in front of us shake out.

Gonna be an exciting draft night I think! Feels like the 1st three picks are starting to lock in with no noise of trades happening... the party will start at #4 depending on which direction NE goes.

Yeah I don't' think we're going to see a ton of moves. Just not a good enough draft imo. If anyone is trading up, it's trading up into the top 5 to try and get one of Carter, Hunter and maybe Jeanty. Those are really the only true blue chip prospects in this draft.

Are there other NFL franchises in this scenario or are the Cowboys an outlier? I know some franchises are known to be cheap (I.e., Bengals), but there has to be some concern from other owners that one of the marquee franchises (from a brand equity/historical perspective) seems to have a fairly poor balance sheet (though perhaps they are fine with the Cowboys financial situation since it keeps them from being contenders).

Golden in the first,
one of the OSU backs in the second OR wait on the RB Sampson from Tennessee in the third.

I agree, but it's possible that we feel this way because we are focused on what the Cowboys need. At our biggest positions of need, there are a lot of similar options so trading down is appealing. There are other teams in the same boat as us.

But there are some other teams that could really use a TE, Edge Rusher or interior O-line guy. There are handful of prospects at key positions that really do stand out above the crowd... will be very tempting for those teams in the teens/early 20's.

It could very well create a trade happy scenario starting around pick 7 or 8 with a handful of teams ready & willing to bail out.

What do you like about Sampson? I studied him very briefly and quickly put him in my "do not want" category. Maybe I didn't watch enough, but he felt like a slower & less athletic version of Hampton.

Fine for a #2 back is suppose, but we need a #1 back and I'm gonna need more burst from that guy.

EDIT: Nevermind. I quickly watched a few highlights and I'm either thinking of the wrong guy or I completely misevaluated him during my previous watch. He's a pretty talented back... would be a good pick in the 3rd!
