That's the biggest issue with pre-season. Game is full of 'try-hards' so you get a lot of guys rolled up on with bodies flying everywhere.

It's like having 15 Jaylon Smiths running around.

I've heard a bunch of podcasts and radio talk about the Cowboys not playing more starters etc. but I ask why? Dudes are falling out across the league in preseason games. Why would I want Dak and Co. to touch the field and risk getting their ankle blown off? We're already a stupid thin team with injuries, why would I put guys out there?

I agree about not playing CD and Pickens. But I would definitely like to stick Dak and the 1st team line in for a couple series.

No hero ball, running around trying to make a play... Just a drop back, make 2 or 3 reads and get the ball out fast. I think the team needs that.

2006 I believe. I was sitting next to a famous texag poster. Completely random.

It's a joke. Fran made the comment at the end of the year that we were a couple points away from competing for a natty.

Well, you know all the other teams played their starters a bit, but the innovative cowboys are just a bit smarter than everyone else. Believe me, Jerry knows football and is in complete control of this preseason…

Its been pretty well documented that Sean McDermott started this trend a few years ago and many consider him one of the smartest coaches in the league.

Wasn't online much this weekend and didn't see the game except for a couple of highlights (lowlights actually), but woof...the offense just can't get it together.

Milton looks so bad that he's keeping us from being able to accurately assess the backup WRs and TEs. I know Holden is getting a lot of buzz in camp...would love to see a couple accurate passes thrown his way in games. I think Milton is an example of a QB that looks great in practice, but not in games.

Might need to troll the cut wire to see if we can pickup a better backup/developmental QB for the season. We know Cleveland ain't keeping all of theirs.

Man "picking up the browns QB scraps" isn't something I thought I'd ever hear someone say but also agreeing with it.

My thoughts on Milton fwiw.
He has amazing arm strength with the accuracy of a scud missile. If he had any sort of touch he would be a dangerous QB. But you mix his inaccuracy with his seeming inability to see the field, he just is not good at all.
God loves you so much He'll meet you where you are. He also loves you too much to allow to stay where you are.

I mean to be fair, if they end up cutting Dillon Gabriel, I would take a flyer and have him be the 3rd QB. Basically the opposite of Milton - small, weaker arm, but good accuracy and processing (at least based on what he he showed in college)

Milton was atrocious and likely won't make the team after that performance. Will Grier is probably the backup after that. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it though. We're discussing backup QBs, not our starter.

I think the LBers as a group were really good and the Corners were also surprisingly good. Bout it. Mazi Smith still sucks and we need to go out and find another NFL caliber DT who can at least hold ground.

Yes, agreed. On defense, I think:

LBs will be fine - this is Eberflus' specialty and I think the personnel here are a good mix for a variety of game situations.

CBs have played decent in the preseason. Depth is a concern of course, but I think Bland and Elam can hold it down. Slot CB still seems to be up for grabs.

Safeties - no change from last year; not a huge strength or weakness.

DEs/pass rush in general will be fine once Micah is back, plus the infusion of young and veteran talent.

DTs - this will be the BIG problem. Mazi just ain't that guy...

I agree with this and I've even posted similar thoughts. I'd also add RBs to that list of people we can't evaluate.

But I will say that by "we" I mean us as fans. The straight up no BS reality of all of this is that the coaches/front office have already made up their mind on all but maybe 2 or 3 players/positions. These games are about getting non star players reps and maybe figuring out who your priority practice squad guys are.

So Burrow and the Starters are playing their third series but Dak can't play even just one? He's also been hit, hard, several times.

Yeah, I said it a few weeks ago... I'm disappointed in this staff if they don't play starters (the few exceptions being CD, Pickens, and at this point our starting CBs).

The starting offensive line needs reps together... Dak needs reps behind them... our starting D-Line needs reps together.

This coaching staff yelled and preached all the right things in training camp. They did a lot of 1st team vs. 1st team in practice.... and now when it's time to play real football the want to sit everyone.

Every year. Then we come out rusty as hell in week 1 and use that as the excuse. Rinse and repeat. The difference this year is we come out against Philly in week 1. Gonna be embarrassing.

A lot of teams don't play their starters and instead try to simulate as many game situations as possible in practice. You get way more reps that way anyway.

You do realize the Eagles won the Super Bowl last year right?

Seriously though... I'm not trying to be a smartass, I'm just messing with you. But the teams are not comparable. We can start resting starters in pre-season when we start winning games that matter.

Listening to a recap of 103.5 via youtube... man they were ripping Joe Milton as well as the front office / coaches pretty hard.

It wasn't that they were using harsh language, they were calmly stating the obvious truth. Joe Milton can't play NFL QB. Very few people can... why is Dallas wasting their time with him. We've already seen everything there is to see. Time to move on.

And I couldn't agree more. You can't teach his kind of arm strength. But you also can't teach a guy to read a defense or throw accurately. You can improve those things, but you can't teach it if the guy doesn't already have at least a little bit of it!

You really think a preseason makes any difference on playoff games? Dak will be fine. He's almost a decade in at this point.

While Milton might have an incredible tool (arm strength), he's a terrible football player that can't utilize the tool he has, nor has he shown the ability to do it at any level. It's not a difficult concept to grasp.

I'm not sure I agree that he hasn't shown ability at any level. He did have 30 TDs to 5 INTs in his time at Tennessee.

I'm not saying he's gonna become a good player, but I think that's a a bit of a strong statement to say that he had not done anything well to justify being an NFL draft pick

Just stating my personal opinion, but I don't know how much stock I put into his stats running Heupel's offense. It's a bit gimicky, and Milton wasn't very effective against better defenses. It did play into his strengths by giving him a lot of opportunities to take deep shots though.

My feelings about it is more of a cultural thing than a reps thing. This is a team that is top loaded enough to go far... But this team could also lose faith quickly and the season turn into a disaster.

I think this pre-season has been pretty terrible so far. I think it's important for this staff and these players to reset the tone before we play the champs week 1.

Tom Brady thought playing in preseason was important but what the heck would he know.

Burrow had not been playing in preseason the last two years and they started slow both times which cost them. Now he's playing in preseason.

The NFC East is a lot stronger than in the past when the Cowboys made the playoffs due in part to an easy NFC East. Every game is going to matter.

On a positive note, I think we've found a good solid piece to help sure up the run D.

Tioa had a much better game this week. Def a big fire hydrant that we've needed in the middel for some time.
