Alright someone who understands the salary cap rules help me out a little here. Just for fun, let's assume Paul and Howard want to come to Houston and create a Big 3 with Harden to try to challenge Miami.

Right now, Houston needs about $3.5M in cap space to afford Howard's max outright. Paul will make about $18.7M according to this: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-clippers-20130505,0,3974474.story

According to this: http://www.hoopsworld.com/houston-rockets-team-salary, Lin, Asik, and T-Rob account for $20.275M next season. We have plenty of non guaranteed contracts like Delfino, Brooks, Anderson, etc, a potential expiring deal like Royce White, or Terrence Jones to reach the $3.5M needed to get Howard's max. Or does the $3.5M already include shedding all the non-guaranteed contracts?

Let's just say we give Lin, Asik, T-Rob, Jones and/or White, and picks for Paul (btw, I think that's a lot better than what OKC got for Harden). We'd be able to get Howard after that trade, correct? Again, assuming these guys are willing to pass up money to try to create a team to contend with Miami.

As far as getting cap space goes, I wanna get rid of Greg Smith, T-Rob, Delfino, and James Anderson. Not sure how much that would give us.

That would be bonerrific Ryan.

To sweeten the pot remember no state tax in Texas. Might make it easier for both of hose guys to take less with that card in hand.

Won't happen. Nobody this day and age will leave LA for Houston. It sucks, but oh well. I won't outright say there's a 0% chance, but I don't see it happening

Why? Plenty Money and opportunity to win is here. Houston has a very real shot at howard

I agree, but people would rather be in LA, NYC, and Miami. We don't really have a shot at CP3 I believe

Plus lets not act like Houston is some dump like Milwaukee, Charlotte, OKC etc

mAgnoliAg, I agree, it will be difficult enough to get Howard OR Paul, let alone both. However, I don't think there is any denying that Harden + Howard + Paul would have the greatest chance at winning a championship, as opposed to either of the LA teams. So, as long of a shot as it is, maybe they will come here and try to win a championship ala Lebron and Bosh with Wade in Miami.

there are dozens of ex and current NBA players that make Houston home. You'd be astonished at how many of them want to live in Houston

I understand your point and want to agree with you, but if Chris paul is content in LA he's gonna stay. He shouldn't be content but who knows

I thought rumors were swirling that CP3 thought Blake and DeAndre were a bunch of petulant children at the end of the season.

And DC comes in with the in-depth!

He'd be a terrific pick up obviously. But that would make Lin the highest paid third string pg in the league.

Trade Lin to lakers for Earl Clark

He's not really a tradeable asset right now, especially with his play in the post season. He really won't be until his last year.

While this seems like something that is appealing, I'm not sure a pro athlete cares about it, and I also don't think an agent enforces this enough, especially since they probably just just get paid based on how big the contract is, not the take home pay.

For a player playing in the SW conference (except NO), about 50 of their 82 games are in non-income tax states.

Dantoni's offense is perfect for him and he's only 23

Sign Paul. Lin, Asik, T-Rob, and Jones for Howard.

I heard this morning that because of the new cba, you can't really do a sign and trade anymore like you used to, since the Lakers are over the cap. I also heard tg hat we couldn't give him a 5th year under a sign and trade anyways, now. The biggest strike against a sign and trade is that LA will not help anybody elae sign Dwight.
Ryan34

The sign and trade limits the receiving team, not the trading one, is my understanding. Also, the contract the player can receive is the same in a sign and trade as it is by simply signing elsewhere. So typically it would make sense for teams to just outright sign players; however if we do the trade I mentioned, I believe we'd have space under the cap to outright sign Paul. I'm not an expert though.

What part of the rules prohibit LA from signing and trading Howard? They can't acquire a player via sign and trade because of how much they have in salary, but they could trade one away. Obviously I'm missing something.

Even if they can't, the Clippers can. Sign Howard. Trade aforementioned players for Paul.

if you are above the salary cap, you cannot sign and trade a player
