I love old cool ones. Like there's a bank in San Antonio that they turned into a Hotel Indigo. It's lovely. Just an old rundown la quinta.

TXAG 05 is right, there's an old Days Inn in Houston (long since debranded) that got turned into a boutique motel (move forward in time).
What did you want anyway, more "Ag Shacks"?
There are actually some Ag Shacks planned for the empty lot right behind the portion of the old La Quinta that is becoming the boutique hotel.
A business or restaurant. Something that will bring in usable tax dollars unlike a small hotel. I don't think we need more HOT funds.
There are a lot of other candidates for hotels that need to be torn down or could be turned into boutique hotels:
- the Red roof in at Texas/SWP
- Days Inn at Texas/SWP
- Days Inn on University
- Motel 6 at Texas and Brentwood
- EZ Travel Inn at Texas near Holleman
- Knights Inn/Econo Lodge at Texas across from First Watch

PJ's coffee is maybe opening soon. They turned on their drive thru menu yesterday and have had it lit up even though they're not open yet. They also took the "coming soon" sign off the front door for some reason. Google says they are opening this Friday. Their own website and social media still just say "coming soon" and they still refuse to answer anyone on social media who asks them how soon they are opening.
Not sure this entirely qualifies as a "coming" but dropped off some clothes at the cleaner on 29th that used to be Pride and now is King (probably a joke in there). They still had my old account on file, so business as usual. Figure I'd post this for people who used Pride and may not know this continuity.

Well I haven't picked up my clothes yet so we'll see. New equipment looks nice though.
Nick the Greek's University Drive East location is closed due to short staffing. I wouldn't bet on it reopening, at least, not any time soon.

I'm pretty sure something was posted here in the last year. I think they sold that store in the new owners operated it under Pride 's name for a while and then changed over sometime in the last year.
Per Rusty, the Northgate Starbucks is among the locations closing.
JC Penny has sold their building at Post Oak Mall.

Not yet. Selling from a holding company to a "pass through trust" for liquidation. The trust plans to sell them as soon as practicable. I'm sure the trust would entertain offers from a municipality.

The Onyx Partners sale, I believe, was something that was pre-arranged during JCPenney's 2020 bankruptcy. Like Sears they had a lot of stores that they owned outright, and they're leasing back the stores from Onyx.
How long are the leases? I don't know.
Will Catalyst Brands (owner of JCPenney) last long enough to ride out those leases? I don't know.
Some articles talk about "liquidation of process of assets", but they're not talking about the company itself, they're talking about the real estate holdings that JCPenney had before bankruptcy.
Short term, it's a way to free up liquidity in a company (or at least make the books look a bit nicer for shareholders), long term it's dangerous as asset-stripping weakens a company. Notably, when Mervyn's was sold by Target to private equity, it got stripped for assets before going under just four years later...but the company was much weaker than JCPenney was, even in 2004.
