Razoos has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. They hope to keep their 20 stores open….

Only 4 of the existing trees are being moved for the project. The building was designed to impact as few of the trees on the property as possible. So the rendered trees are the ones that are there today.

Assuming you're correct, that's awesome! I'll be waiting with bated breath.

Hate to see anything fail. However, Razoos was always kind of a mediocre concept altogether. Weird that it I even got to twenty units.

Man, there was a time when you had to fight for a table in College Station. We went a few weeks ago and we were 1 of maybe 6 tables.

We used to go frequently and thought it was good. Then service started going downhill. The final straw for us was when a waitress started scraping gum out from under the neighboring table with a putty knife while we were still eating. That was 5-6 years ago and was the last time we've been.

They have been open for a while, but the official grand opening for Dimassi's is coming up on Friday, October 10th.

Does anyone think we have oversaturated the BCS market in terms of restaurants?

I know we love options but I see a lot of empty tables when i go places in town lately

Prices have skyrocketed and rents are so high, that families cannot justify eating out as much as needed to carry these expenses that these place entail

Yeah. It's hard to do even fast food for under $15 sometimes.

I know I don't eat out as often as I used to. Same with others I know. Just too dang expensive. I cannot fathom anyone's thinking of opening a place in the current market. Both the economic market and local one.

It will be interesting to see how things play out with the increased stresses on the industry, from labor shortages to rising cost of raw materials. Might have a situation where the places that best weather it are small low overhead joints like storefront taquerias, and a very few high end places like The Republic and Christopher's which are veterans of hard times. In any case, all the best luck and good fortune to those opening new places in these extremely trying times.

I wonder how much the empty tables is a shift to takeout/delivery.

What would be the motivator for more takeout/delivery vs sit down dining? I'm actually curious. Cheaper because of no/less tipping?

That and lots of DoorDash and Uber Eats and Favor and whatever other delivery services.

Delivery means that with tax and tip you're basically adding $10 to any meal. You'll be getting cold food for a premium.

Menu prices are typically higher also if ordering from one of the apps. The cost of just not wanting to go back out at the end of the day.

Not all of them. Chick-fil-A certainly is much higher. We have DoorDash because I work from home and can't always cook. If I have 8 hours of meetings, I'm ordering lunch and probably going out for dinner and drinks afterwards and putting as much on the company as I can.

Another reason for not opening a new place is the unreliability of help. I spoke with a friend the other day who owns a very popular restaurant. He has hired 4 managers since January 1 and has none of them remaining, including one who never bothered to show up the first day of work.
But it isn't just restaurants. I waited 15 minutes to buy a battery at Walmart the other day and went looking around for someone to take my money. Walked all the way to the front cashiers' area and asked.
"No one showed up for work today."

I went to Jersey Mike's last week. Didn't recognize any of the employees even though it's a fairly regular stop for us.

Asked the 22 year-old managing the place if they sent the old employees to other stores or did they run everybody off.

He said they turned over 80% of the crew because of attendance issues.

Another business I'm friendly with had a recent hire that lasted a few weeks and one that never showed up for their first day.

I don't know how these people pay for stuff.

They find better jobs. There's a labor shortage underway, and a lot of employers don't seem to realize that. T&P.

1. Pay your people well.
2. As their boss, don't be a d***.

That solves the overwhelming majority of issues like this.

More news on the Lake Walk development from the city of Bryan.

Quote:

The Bryan city council approves participating in an expansion of the westside Lake Walk district.

The council, acting as the Bryan commerce and development board (BCD), will spend 80 percent and lend the developer a portion of the remaining 20 percent of the nearly $5 million dollar cost of required infrastructure for an office building and restaurant space near the Stella hotel.

Background information from the city says the expansion will generate $20 million dollars in land sales revenue. Sales and property tax revenue from an office building and entertainment venue is projected to eventually generate more than $26 million dollars a year. And the future construction of multi-family housing and commercial uses is projected to generate an additional $80 million dollars.

The development will also include a 200 space parking garage. The council approved a separate economic development agreement where the city will front the $1.8 million dollar construction cost with a construction loan.

Anyone a bit skeptical of these numbers?

Not coming, at least for now, the proposed trolley between Downtown Bryan, Midtown Bryan, Northgate, TAMU, and Century Square. Interesting interview with the mayor of Bryan on WTAW yesterday where he said it was because of Bryan Woods. Woods previously signed a letter in support and now says he will not do anything that helps the City of Bryan (that is the Bryan Mayor's spin on it at least). Interview starts around 4:15 - https://wtaw.com/bryan-mayor-bobby-gutierrez-on-wtaw-52/

Assuming the mayor is correct, I would hope that Woods' response is reflecting guidance from the City of College Station council. However, I don't have much faith in the CS city government at this time. Could be just Mayor Nichols' response and not council. What a cluster CS government has become.
