Culpepper has a filing with the city requesting a public access easement be changed to a public way at their development at the old Hurricane Harry's site. The request is for what they call the "grocery store section" of the development. No other details given on said grocery store that I could find.
Wasn't it an Albertsons a long time ago? Maybe thats what they are referring to?
Maybe. I would think a grocery development of that area would be premature. Before Hurricane Harry's closed and the rest of the development went away, the Albertsons (closed since 1997) and some adjacent retail was a grassy field, with paint on the outside of the remaining strip mall reading "The STACK Field", though I don't ever remember anyone from the nearby apartment building actually using it.
Before it was an Albertsons, it was a Jewel Osco which I guess is/was some grocery store chain from somewhere else. I never heard of it before I came to A&M.
It's complicated.
- Skaggs creates partnership with Albertsons to makes new drug/combo stores (Skaggs Albertsons, the original name)
- Breakup of partnership causes Skaggs (later American Stores) to rename it as their own brand (Skaggs Alpha Beta)
- Purchases Lucky Stores in the mid-1980s, a store mostly in California
- Major lawsuits follow in California due to alleged monopoly
- End up having to divest Alpha Beta entirely as a brand
- Renames the stores as Jewel-Osco, another brand they have in Chicago
- Ends up selling them less than a year later to Albertsons
Albertsons closed it in 1997 to buy the old Randalls when they were closing it...and the main reason they pulled out of our area was issues stemming from purchasing American Stores entirely in 1999.
