This WWC has been reduced to a mini European Championships with a guest team (USA) trying to spoil the party.

Also making Olympics qualification difficult for these European sides. Only 3 can earn spots for 2020.

There are more European teams in the round of 8 than teams from the western hemisphere in the whole tourney.

I figured the financial investment by european clubs would certainly impact the party by 2023, but it appears we're here already

USA
Canada
Jamaica
England
Scotland
Spain
Brazil
Argentina
Chile

But I get your point. Not a lot of North or South American countries in the tourney in general.

Nobody from Asia or Oceania is the real surprise.

it should be said, South American teams traditionally dont perform as well in european world cups on the mens side. Not sure if that transfers at all

So when we beat France on Friday we won't just knock them out of their own World Cup, we will also keep the 2nd best team in the world out of the next Olympics?

After world cup ends, do the NWSL players immediately return to their teams for the rest of the season?

So the soccer board actually does have mods. That is disappointing

Yeah. Most folks here wish they started at 8p. But keep in mind it's a later culture here anyways and it stays light until ~10:30p. So it's not too bad.

Bronze with a screamer. Making a strong case for Golden Ball.

England is the team that seems to be peaking at the right time. They are playing well.

Glad to see Norway in the "out" heap.

England looks pretty strong. Well deserved.

Offside position is reviewed on every play by a dedicated AR in the booth. They don't send it down for review. If they call it in the booth they just tell the referee.

The goal was good. Renard was always onside. The other player was off but she never came close to playing the ball.

And O'Hara I'm sure was looked at in the booth and deemed not an error. It was never handling IMHO.

We're gonna have to beat half of Western Europe for the title: Sweden, Spain, France, England, and one of Germany/Italy/Netherlands/Sweden

So France is knocked out from the World Cup and the olympics?

Haha if true..... won't have to see that scary midfielder Diani for quite awhile.

Yup
the 3 semifinalists from UEFA get the 3 olympics spots

I thought Tobin Heath's goal was good, no offside. They showed the replay, looked good to me. Was gonna be PISSED if France scored a second and that missing goal started to matter.

Is the Olympic field decided after the World Cup?

UEFA determines their 3 qualifiers through World Cup finish. I believe all the other regional federations hold qualifying tournaments.

Conmebol & Oceania use their pre-WWC regional cups
Europe uses the WWC
CONCACAF, Africa & Asia have specific Olympic qualifying tournaments.

Europe will probably be changing that rule after the French complain. Hopefully France still misses the olympics next year before they change it tho. In fairness, Europe has most of the good teams so they should do a tournament to decide who gets in.

I think they did it to not interrupt the professional season for a "major" tournament and to not detract from the Euros as their primary championship. No other regions have a major women's championship to my knowledge so specific Olympic qualifiers make sense for them.

Will be interesting to see what they do but I think this year was just a perfect storm for the Europeans.

The game is changing. European countries are starting to take women's soccer seriously. Seeing the US and a bunch of euro teams in the top 8 of the World Cup like this year could be pretty common going forward. Especially with most of brazil's good players being pretty old, they're the only relevant team in South America.
