This WWC has been reduced to a mini European Championships with a guest team (USA) trying to spoil the party.

UEFA determines their 3 qualifiers through World Cup finish. I believe all the other regional federations hold qualifying tournaments.
Europe will probably be changing that rule after the French complain. Hopefully France still misses the olympics next year before they change it tho. In fairness, Europe has most of the good teams so they should do a tournament to decide who gets in.littlebitofhifi said:Hand Of God said:

Conmebol & Oceania use their pre-WWC regional cups
Europe uses the WWC
CONCACAF, Africa & Asia have specific Olympic qualifying tournaments.
The game is changing. European countries are starting to take women's soccer seriously. Seeing the US and a bunch of euro teams in the top 8 of the World Cup like this year could be pretty common going forward. Especially with most of brazil's good players being pretty old, they're the only relevant team in South America.littlebitofhifi said:
I think they did it to not interrupt the professional season for a "major" tournament and to not detract from the Euros as their primary championship. No other regions have a major women's championship to my knowledge so specific Olympic qualifiers make sense for them.
Will be interesting to see what they do but I think this year was just a perfect storm for the Europeans.
