That Japanese team was motivated like no other. They had some sneaky good players too.Hand Of God said:
We'll obviously be heavily favored in the final but Japan pulled off the upset in 2011. The US had the lead twice in that match but fell in penalties. Would be playing for a third consecutive title if not for that shocker.
I guess it snapped her head in a way that injured her neck based on how they put the brace on her and took her off on a stretcher. When I watched the replay of the play I agree that it looked like it should have been harmless.I Am Mine said:littlebitofhifi said:

It looked harmless. Header against the side of her face.

The rapid rise of the Netherlands...
2015: qualify for first WWC, fall in Round of 16
2017: win the UEFA Women's Championship
2019: reach WWC final
They deserve credit and they have come along way in a short amount of time, but it must be noted that they didn't play any of the top 4 teams to get to this point.Hand Of God said:

Infantino wants to expand Women's World Cup to 32 teams
https://www.thescore.com/wwcup/news/1794916
I don't think we're ready for this yet but glad the conversation is happening. Would like to see this for 2027, not 2023. Love the idea of a world club championship ASAP though.
I don't like what it's going to do to the quality of the group stage, as you say, but women's soccer really only gets any significant attention during the Women's World Cup (and maybe to a lesser degree the Olympics, but they have everything going on at the same time). Men's soccer has countless club teams and international competitions that draw billions of eyeballs all the time. I'm not in favor of the upcoming expansion of the men's World Cup, but given these factors with the women's game, maybe moving to 32 would be positive in the long run.OregonAggie said:
I actually think expansion is what the Women's game needs. It may be a loss leader for a couple cycles but eventually other countries will start putting money into women's soccer if there's a chance for a WC and the money that comes with it.
We're gonna have some painful group stage games but I think we will eventually get more competition from across the globe.
Wait, people are complaining about having all day Sunday American soccer to watch? WtfPatAg said:
I don't get the uproar over the Gold Cup and Copa America finals being Sunday. When else would they hold them? They arent even conflicting schedules
The argument I see is they would never do this to the men...no **** Sherlock, that's not even possible
No doubt, most casual people don't know the Gold Cup is going on, but the Women's World Cup is national newsPatAg said:
It's clearly going to get the most viewers by a wide margin too, at least imo
