We'll obviously be heavily favored in the final but Japan pulled off the upset in 2011. The US had the lead twice in that match but fell in penalties. Would be playing for a third consecutive title if not for that shocker.

Yeah. Looks like she was out cold before she landed.

It looked harmless. Header against the side of her face.

That Japanese team was motivated like no other. They had some sneaky good players too.

I remember their team was trying to win to give japan something to cheer about. That was the year that Japan got hit by the earthquake / tsunami.

As disappointed as I was that we blew it in the final, I was just really glad Japan had something to celebrate.

I guess it snapped her head in a way that injured her neck based on how they put the brace on her and took her off on a stretcher. When I watched the replay of the play I agree that it looked like it should have been harmless.

eta: misspelled her name. It's Asllani with two Ls.

The rapid rise of the Netherlands...
2015: qualify for first WWC, fall in Round of 16
2017: win the UEFA Women's Championship
2019: reach WWC final

As we discussed on the Gold Cup thread their youth development is outstanding and I'm sure that translated to the women.

They deserve credit and they have come along way in a short amount of time, but it must be noted that they didn't play any of the top 4 teams to get to this point.

Yep - looked harmless. A deflected ball off her jaw.

My daughter had a very similar ball hit her and she was out for six weeks with a concussion. All the straight on heading on goalie punts - no problem, but the ball hit her cheek with some force and she was concussed.

Meanwhile, their men's side has been on the decline since finishing 3rd in Brazil. Missed the 2016 Euros and 2018 WC.

Nah bro. She's cuter, maybe more spunky, but Asllani is hotter. Very important distinction.

That's funny.

It could be argued that Spain was our toughest game. The offense looked lethargic and we needed 2 penalty kicks to win.

Infantino wants to expand Women's World Cup to 32 teams

https://www.thescore.com/wwcup/news/1794916

I don't think we're ready for this yet but glad the conversation is happening. Would like to see this for 2027, not 2023. Love the idea of a world club championship ASAP though.

Yeah......

We really don't need 8 more teams like Thailand in the tournament. I read an article by some idiot the other day saying that we should expand the olympics, but I like that it has some exclusivity. They can only have so many matches with so much other stuff going on at the same time.

I agree about Thailand, but I think choosing the outlier is misleading. For example, the Netherlands required a play-in game to qualify and are now in the final. So Europe has more to offer. Panama had a nice CONCACAF qualifying tourney with some players who are now playing professionally based on that performance. Colombia won their qualifying group but then got knocked out in the final stage of CONMEBOL.

So there are teams that are close and exposure = investment. But I'd rather see the club championship happen first, develop some of these stars from lower federations and then 2027 could look very different top-to-bottom.

I actually think expansion is what the Women's game needs. It may be a loss leader for a couple cycles but eventually other countries will start putting money into women's soccer if there's a chance for a WC and the money that comes with it.

We're gonna have some painful group stage games but I think we will eventually get more competition from across the globe.

I don't like what it's going to do to the quality of the group stage, as you say, but women's soccer really only gets any significant attention during the Women's World Cup (and maybe to a lesser degree the Olympics, but they have everything going on at the same time). Men's soccer has countless club teams and international competitions that draw billions of eyeballs all the time. I'm not in favor of the upcoming expansion of the men's World Cup, but given these factors with the women's game, maybe moving to 32 would be positive in the long run.

I don't get the uproar over the Gold Cup and Copa America finals being Sunday. When else would they hold them? They arent even conflicting schedules
The argument I see is they would never do this to the men...no **** Sherlock, that's not even possible

No doubt, most casual people don't know the Gold Cup is going on, but the Women's World Cup is national news
