I'm seeing a lot of smoke on X that Maryland has their guy when Willard pulls the rug to Nova. Lots of tidbits out there suggesting it's Buzz.

Going to be interesting to watch it play out. Maryland is without an AD and it seems like low on funding based on Willard's press antics.

That situation at Maryland is absolutely wild. There's some smoke that if they win tonight they're not going to let Willard coach the next game.

But this was talked about in that other thread about revenue sharing, a Big East school like Nova that doesn't play big time football can spend more money on basketball than a Big Ten school like Maryland that's trying to compete in football.

I just searched X.

There's a single mention of an anonymous Baltimore reporter and a "CBB Guru" with 1k followers saying Buzz is guaranteed. That's it.

The Maryland 247 guy is probably the best Maryland guy out there, he's been all over this Willard situation the whole way and was all over the athletic director situation really early on.

Not sure if he's weighed in on there but if he has he's really connected up there.

Yeah I think I said on the coaching carousel thread a month ago that there's absolutely no way we should be caught wrong-footed if Buzz leaves.

Which would make it all the more upsetting if this guy knows about it before it happens and our AD is caught flat footed.

Lot of "nobodies" seemed to know about the Schloss transaction too. I obviously don't take every random twitter rumor as gospel, but if you don't think there's been smoke around Buzz wanting out at A&M to retire or take a different job after this year then I don't think you've been paying attention. Meanwhile there's been lots of smoke about the Maryland coach leaving for Villanova.

Agreed, Maryland would have to be crazy. But at least we'd be forced to find someone else. I'd rather we at least tried to get better than be content with mediocrity.

You've said this twice now on this thread, but what makes you think we will be caught "by surprise" or "flat-footed" if Buzz leaves?

You honestly think the administration was caught by surprise when Schloss left? No, of course they weren't.

If Buzz leaves within the next week or 2, Im almost 100% certain we won't be "caught by surprise." Does that mean we will hire someone 2 days later and it will be a home run? No, it doesn't, but those 2 things aren't mutually exclusive. Just because we might be anticipating Buzz leaving doesn't mean we have his replacement already in the bag.

My prediction is he would never sniff a Final Four at Maryland (much like Turgeon). Expectations at Maryland will actually be to make Final Fours. And he will end up being fired.

I mean almost all coaches ultimately get fired. I don't know if he'll put together a 1 seed type season there or not. I'd probably bet against that. But I wouldn't be surprised if they're really good either.

I've always felt like Maryland had the real prestige of a basketball powerhouse without actually having the skins on the wall to back it up. Feels like since they are on the East coast - but not in the south - they are just "a big time basketball school."

They've don't a decent job of making the tournament since 2000 (little better than every other year) and obviously have the NC in 2002, but only 2 Final 4s ever and only 3 S16 trips in the last 20 years.

Just feels like it should be more.

Depends what brand of ball he decides to play. He all of a sudden turned it into money ball offensive rebounding here at A&M which he had never done before. If he reverts back to a different style then maybe he has a chance to put together something special. If he continues with the current strategy of "intentionally play people who miss shots", I'll go with he caps out at the R32 or S16.

I'm saying I hope we are not caught flat footed. Not that I'm sure we will be.

Idk that we need to have his replacement in the bag like Maryland if we are aware that he has a good chance of leaving … but I do hope plenty of back channel calls have been made to know who's even interested in hearing us out. That way we aren't surprised by anyone saying "no" even when we throw the biggest bag ever at them (referring to baseball) and end up with our 15th choice.

If he leaves in the next few days we will be in a much better position timeline wise then we were when Turgeon left in May. So that's good at least.
