It wasn't that hard to piece together that he was trying to float himself for the Indiana job. And I'll say it again that the Wade jersey ceremony absolutely reeked of a coach that thought they were on their way out.

I still think it's like 50/50. Again, he's obviously looking to jump, but someone has to want him, and want him at a price he's willing to take.

Exactly. The right other program has to also want him for him to leave.

Hire Chris Jans and get him to bring Josh Hubbard with him

Jans is interesting....seems to be one of those that does more with less....

Beard on the other hand, he's t.u. alumni....and i'm betting he'll either stay put or seek other jobs long before entertaining A&M.

Being alumni somewhere doesn't always play a factor....but in Beard's case, it might.
Best you could hope for is that he's maybe got some animosity toward t.u. now? Of which he may listen to us, just to stab t.u. right in the eyeball...

I'd love it if that were the case....but i seriously doubt that's the case....

I hadn't followed this the last 24 hours, but now I'm kind of excited.

The only way you get Beard is if he just wants to try to ruin Texas. And he takes the job out of spite for the Longhorns. Aggies would love it. I don't think he comes here though.

So is Buzz recruiting the portal for his current job at A&M or for his potential new job?

Yes. You might think it's an either/or question, but it's really not.

I think Jans would do well here and I think we could get him. I'm not certain his ceiling is a whole lot higher than Buzz's, but he is very much a high floor guy.

I'd take Jans over buzz today

It's a very logical move for Buzz. He's done well here but hasn't set the world on fire. If he missed the tournament next year plenty of people would be looking for a change.

The SEC is going to be tough next year, and we basically need to rebuild the whole roster. So try to get a job at a bigger basketball school (with a raise), or sit on your hands and maybe get fired here after going 15-17 next year?

Not saying I disagree, but curious your reasoning?

His teams are tough as hell and his last two seasons they played very differently (defense forward in '23, more offense forward in '24), but had basically identical seasons. I'd be willing to bet the apparent ceiling they've hit is more MSU related than Jans, but curious what makes you prefer him?

I mean, what are we thinking the odds of keeping buzz are now? 10%?

If the Goodman tweet is legit, and he's rarely not, he's gone…and I don't think I'd want a coach asking to get out anyways…even if it means a painful reset.
Its higher than 10%, he's gotta actually get himself hired somewhere. If Maryland doesn't hire him, who will?

I dont think the checkbooks are going to open at New Mexico, Drake, and I dont think UNT, Oral Roberts, Navy, Fordham, Denver, Bryant, Alabama A&M, Alcorn State, or Arkansas State are options, nor will any of those schools hire from a school that would create an opening.

Basically his options right now are sneak in front of Kevin Willard at Villanova, get the Maryland job if Willard leaves, or hope Maryland hires someone away from a school that can afford to replace their departed coach with Buzz Williams.

Because I agree, I think it's more MSU related than Jans. I just like his personality, his Xs and Os. He's a "good" guy by all accounts and well liked by players. He seems like a buzz guy with less quirky baggage. I'm not saying he'd get us a final 4 finally, but I don't think he'd do any worse than Buzz and probably have a tad higher ceiling.

We can scratch Nova off. They wouldn't touch Buzz. And, Philly folks would have such a disdain for him in short order. I don't think the faith first coaching would go over well in those parts, unfortunately, even with Nova being a Catholic school.

I'm just saying that its a major job that is vacant and can pay multi-millions. Right now its the only one open. If they hire from Maryland, then Maryland would be the only one open. After that? There doesn't appear to be a whole huge cascade unless like Tom Izzo or somebody like that is going to retire.

I had the thought too of him being somewhat similar style wise to Buzz in some ways, but without all of the oddities. I think with some effort he's a guy who could get fans bought in.

Chris Jans is a great coach. I know that people are going to scoff at this one because of Earley's struggles, but Luke Murray has been an assistant for Chris Mack and Danny Hurley for most of his career, would not be opposed to giving him a shot.

Wonder why blue blood KU Turgeon did not work at Maryland?
Must have complained about the attendance when he was losing??

I live in MD and, yeah, he complained a lot. Eventually, the fanbase told him to f off. Kind of like what Willard is doing now. Buzz will do well there because he doesn't generally complain. Just #getbetter.

Of note, I lived in Kentucky when Gillespie went to Kentucky. Lived in Maryland when Turgeon went to Maryland. And i still live in Maryland..
Buzz cries about tweets all the time, not sure where you got that he didn't complain.

He doesn't complain about facilities or attendance to the public.
He does it in a subtle way. Like talking about how many Tech fans showed up in Forth Worth for the game and being taken aback by the difference in the crowd. Talked about how many Purdue fans traveled up the road to Indianapolis. I took those to be more comments about A&M fans not going to the DFW and Houston games when we have them. And for the record, those are valid comments. Why don't our fans show for those games

I am one of those that would like for Buzz (or another good coach) to have a Matt Painter or Tom Izzo career with us but he is one of the least engaging coach with the fan base. He does not participate or tries to promote the program with fans at all. So his apathy with fan engagement and our poor marketing strategies in big metropolitan areas and even in college station result in poor attendance and fan engagement.

I mentioned him in a couple threads as well. It is a big gamble, but I'd be more willing to give him his shot than some of the other small school coaches I'm not sold on.

According to Google, Jans is already making $4.2M/year. Why would he come here? We can't (and shouldn't) pay him anything enough above that to get his attention.

I was referring to Luke Murray in that post.

As for Jans, I think A&M is just a better job than MSU and if you do well you'll be given more resources. We have a lot more boosters capable of giving him what he wants/needs than MSU does. I think MSU has a ceiling that he's already starting to hit.

Buzz should definitely not be the bar. We barely average Top 40 recruiting classes.

Once it's clear the coach wants out, it is a done deal. But, Buzz's little plan flopped a bit when the team bounced early in the tourney. Maybe he still wiggles in somewhere else. IMO he went all in for this year with roster planning in order to make a move

At this point, he will have to do some very un-Buzz things to salvage relationships with the AD and others if he can't find a job, and our search is already churning behind the scenes. If he has to come back at this point, we are all cooked. Maybe we hold onto Payne, that's the only benefit.

No way we have these balls, but nothing would be better than dumping his ass with a great replacement hire and him having to go somewhere mid.
