Yeah that's the other thing, is our job even better than Creighton? Especially with the revenue sharing model?

Iowa felt they had no chance at McDermott. Ohio St tried to hire him and give him a big pay raise and he said No. I think he is happy where he is.

-He isn't going to get an extension right now
-We aren't going to fire him because he's done a nice job
-The roster and culture is going to completely have to turn over and be re-built this year
-Buzz's decision on if he wants a longer term commitment right now somewhere else or if he wants to stay here and rebuild a a new team. If he stays he knows he'll need to produce quickly to get the next extension
he was just extend last year to 2028. I don't see Trev moving that out longer.

Maybe he gets a raise outta of it. But i don't see that either
if we give him a raise, I will lose all hope.
depends. If Trev doesn't have anyone else lined up that's better. Wouldn't a small raise make sense?

Again I think Trev won't counter Maryland assuming they come from Buzz.

Yep. Greg's stint at IAst was a flop. Don't know what happen there. .... Overall, Greg delivers a lot, with less.

I also agree that we won't fight to keep him, even if it would make a difference

Maybe, maybe not. There's definitely a couple that have already agreed to jobs that I'd call and see if they've signed anything yet.

Maybe we could get someone to pull a Chris Beard.
Beard makes more than Buzz, around 5mil. So unless he is looking to leave, I doubt we are going to up the ante enough to make him up ship. Same thing for Chris Jans, currently making 4.2mil. If you're going to money whip someone that's around that range, what about Kelvin Sampson? Who seems like a bargain, makes the same as buzz, 4.6mil. Or Shaka Smart at marquette?

Why not instead of paying a meh coach $5MM/year and then bemoan that we can only afford average talent... we pay talent $4MM/year and then see what an average coach can do with it?

That's not what I was talking about. I was referring to when Beard took the UNLV job and then 19 days later took the Tech job.

I highly doubt we're going to "money whip" anyone. Maybe we'll try and get some people some nice raises.

If you could guarantee me this is what would happen then I'd be all for trying it out.

Sampson yes. Smart no way. Even though he is doing great the optics of hiring a coach that Texas let go will never happen.

I like your idea! And,.....make the player sign a contract that has a buyout clause in it. If player goes portal, the new school has to pay the buyout before the player leaves.

Sampson isn't going anywhere. UH is his last stop and his son is getting the job when he decides to hang it up. I think Shaka will be at Marquette for the long haul and not sure he'd be a fit here anyway. I think for Jans it would be about buy in and upside of the job. I personally think MSU is even more limited when it comes to basketball than we have been. With some commitments around program support I think the ceiling here would be higher than at MSU.

Do we know how the rules are going to work in the revenue sharing model yet?

You definitely can't do this in the current model.

Nebraska was better this year than their W/L IMO. They were 1-7 in 3 pt games this year, they played a lot of very good teams close. But Hoiberg is well paid at Nebraska and I doubt we'd give him enough of a raise to leave.

Not sure if Eric Olen would jump but he has a ton of upside.

"Reaching out" is a low bar for recruiting. Football probably reaches out to 1500 guys but brings less than 100 in for visits. I really like seeing who is coming in on a visit because that indicates both legitimate interest from us and reciprocal interest from the player.

It just seems like we're always trailing "the next big edge"... It's all about facilities... then once we fundraise facilities it's not about facilities anymore. Rinse, repeat.

I have to assume NIL will eventually get reigned in. But until it does, being in the market for a new coach at a school that isn't likely to poach a "name" coach without a massive overpay produces an unique opportunity to maybe be the leader for once.

And if the NIL landscape changes in a year or three and you haven't had success, you're not really any worse off than you might have been otherwise.

It might be reined in next year. I'm not sure how the NIL stuff works with the revenue sharing.

ADs want guys they pick.

I doubt our AD will fight to keep Buzz. If it comes to that, hopefully he's got someone really good semi-lined up.

Don't think Smart is the right coach for A&M, but he wasn't fired by tu. He left on his own for Marquette. tu undoubtedly tries to spin it they didn't want him anymore when he left, but he was not fired.

When Buzz left Marquette there were blogs and analysis of some comments that he made, implying Buzz was more comfortable as a basketball coach at a 'football' school. And Texas is his home state. Maryland from that line of thought would not be a good fit.

On the other hand, Buzz has been through 3 ADs in 6 years here and on top of that I think I read that when Albert's laid off a bunch of AD staff that included one or more positions related to basketball. And Buzz apparently is high maintenance and has his ways. So Buzz might be certainly be dissatisfied with anything from his boss to resources.

Buzz's Buyout as of April 1 last year was $19 million, not sure what it now is a year later but if still $12 million plus that is also a factor that isn't necessarily going to make it easy for him to jump.

Who knows. Internet rumors are notoriously hit or miss. I am in the camp where I think he is more likely than not still coaching here next season.

I was just making sure. You'd be surprised there are people here who would actually believe we could pull that off.

What would folks here think if we hired Porter Moser?

I wouldn't hate it but I wouldn't love it.

Yeah, that actually wasn't even his first time. He pulled the exact same stunt 4 years prior, taking a job 6 days after agreeing to another.

I would be completely shocked if he left. I just don't believe the rumors. And if he does leave, we are pretty ****ed because all the mid-majors attractives have taken jobs. So we would be forced to go low major coaching route. I think there are some diamonds there but the step up to SEC is a mighty leap. And I don't think any high major coaches are going to come to Texas A&M. Especially since this roster will be completely bare after the remaining guys follow Buzz.
