Weird win. Glad we won, but seemed like we gave up after the 1st inning
I think one thing we may be seeing is that our bullpen was way over its ski's the first month. That helped us win some close ones. We were pretty worried about the bullpen coming into the year and now we may see why.

Yep. Maybe it's just when I watch, but it seems like every time Beeks pitches over the last month, he gives up a bomb.
Let's see if deGrom can give up less than 2 homers today. That would be some nice improvement. Haven't watched much this season but last year deGrom had the same problem. Last year deGrom would pitch very well but as soon as he made one mistake the ball was out of the yard. Why are his mistakes being capitalized more than other pitchers? Our hitters will let opposing pitchers make mistakes all day long.
JMO but it has seemed to me that when deGrom has made a mistake, it's a really bad one. A BP fastball right down the middle of the plate. He could get away with that when he still was hitting 100mph, not so much at 97 where he seems to be sitting right now.
Just my opinion of course, but he throws a pretty flat fastball these days, and 97 mph isn't all that anymore. It worked when he was throwing 101 for 75% of his fastballs, but now when you miss with a 97 mph heater it gets taken 425 feet.

deGrom's fastball has no run anymore. It's not just the speed, it's that it stays flat.
In his dominant years he was in the 95th percentile or better in fastball run. This year he's in the 10th percentile.
The breaking pitches are still strong but the fastball is a below average pitch.

A win tonight would sure feel good. Get a little momentum and start getting guys back healthy.
Great points. Pitching has gotten crazy lately with the speeds and movement.
I said this last year, but deGrom needed and needs to develop a real weaponized changeup. He's got absolutely nothing that runs in on a right handed hitter. Everything for him is flat or it moves away from righties or into lefties. A good, consistent changeup would transform him from a good/solid starter back to an elite CY caliber dude.
Leiter is a good example of this imo, although Leiter has nowhere near the consistency on a pitch to pitch basis.

In regards to Leiter, I do think he's made noticeable strides from last year. Just gotta hope he keeps making improvements.

I had a feeling McCutchen was about to be let go. Posted about it the other day. But I thought it would be to make room for when Seager and Langford return to the team. Maybe Lopez is a temporary stopgap for a few days since we don't have much down in AAA these days. We have plenty of IF'ers already on the roster.
I don't blame CY for giving McCutchen a shot. He put up some good Spring Training stats, but he's just not getting it done. It may be the end of the road for McCutchen, but he had a good career.
I swear, DeGrom better not suck tonight. At home, vs. in-state rival, he needs to show up. Boos better come out if Alvarez sends one over the bullpen again.
Newberg believes Lopez was called up due to Foscue's issues in the field, which makes sense since he's starting at 2B tonight.

Would not be shocked if when Seager comes back if Foscue is traded.
Not that I have any sources but that was my thought as well. I thought Foscue looked better than I thought initially based on most reports of his poor fielding but he seems to have lost confidence after some throwing errors. Looked very tentative last night.
I was worried about defensive regression losing Garcia and Semien but didn't think we'd be flat out bad. Seem to remember Bochy putting a big emphasis there.

Much agreed on that one. It seems that this team has been as bad they have been. Losing Bochy has been far worse than i thought.

On paper, that isn't terrible. You can accept a terrible hitting catcher.

Agree about Seager, he's just injured too much. I'm not sure what the market would be for Pederson, maybe if he gets on a hot streak - seems to me he's more likely DFAd than traded, but who knows.
Foscue is probably headed back to AAA as soon as somebody gets healthy. He just isn't a good enough fielder to be a utility guy.

Pederson is been pretty good this year. He seems to always be on base.
Pederson and Jung were the two that we were all convinced would suck this year.

He's been adequate, I wouldn't go so far as "pretty good". .234 average, .351 OBP, .722 OPS. My point would be I don't think those numbers are going to get you much in a trade.
